Anne Boleyn has been played on screen since the silent movie era. She’s been portrayed as a six-fingered boo-hiss villain, a Saturday Night Live punchline, a ghost haunting Princess Diana, and in recent stage musical Six, a Kate Nash-style aitch-dropping popstrel.

The film American Assassin with Michael Keaton is becoming a hit on streaming after seven years.
In 2017, American Assassin premiered in theaters, and it wasn't a major success at the box office. It grossed $67 million, which was considered to be a disappointment with the film's $33 million budget (and additional marketing costs) in mind. Critics were also a bit mixed on the film, giving American Assassin a Rotten Tomatoes score of 34%, though its audience score is considerably higher at 60%. Per Screen Rant, the film has also just seen a resurgence on Netflix, finding a new audience for the action-thriller seven years after it underwhelmed with its theatrical run.

Ansel Elgort, Dev Patel, and Manu Bennett are among the potential actors who could be perfect choices to play Mitch Rapp in an American Assassin reboot. Chris Hemsworth was originally the first choice for the role of Mitch Rapp, but now Liam Hemsworth or Sam Worthington could be considered. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Oscar Isaac, Robert Pattinson, and Karl Urban are other actors who could bring their own unique qualities to the character of Mitch Rapp in a reboot.
It's interesting to speculate how Mitch Rapp of American Assassin fame could be revitalized with a reboot that takes advantage of the many possible casting choices for the character. Released in 2017, American Assassin didn't get a sequel, under-performing commercially and critically, but with such a rich legacy of author Vince Flynn's books featuring Mitch Rapp as a protagonist, the opportunity to revive the character is ripe for the taking. In 2017, on the press circuit for his first Hercule Poirot film Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh was asked by French newspaper Le Figaro to name his three favourite Agatha Christie Novels. The actor-director picked Orient Express, of course, and two others: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926, and, published a decade later in 1936, Murder in Mesopotamia.
“I like one, Roger Ackroyd, because it’s deep in the heart of England so it’s classic Christie, village green…,” said Branagh. “And the other one because it’s in a super-exotic archaeological dig and she knew those really well so you feel in both of those cases amazing detail. She knows what she’s writing about.”
Christie would know the setting for Murder in Mesopotamia, an archaeological dig in Iraq, having spent several months on expeditions in Iraq and Syria with her second husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan.

Olm's anime adaptation of Agatha Christie's novels is surprisingly family-friendly and accurately portrays Poirot and Marple's famous mysteries without being too grisly. The anime jumps between Poirot and Marple's best cases, occasionally taking creative liberties, but still remains the only anime adaptation of Christie's novels. While the addition of the new character Mabel West may feel unnecessary, the anime's long runtime allows Christie's stories to fully unfold without any trimming.
While murder mysteries might not be regarded as family-friendly, Oriental Light and Magic's Agatha Christie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple is a surprisingly able adaptation. While aimed at children, the anime still accurately depicts Christie's most famous novels without becoming too grisly. For mystery fans who want a soft touch when introducing the titular great detectives to a younger audience, Olm surprisingly has it handled.

As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.

7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

So we’re really committing to this cinematic Poirotverse, huh? Ok.
The Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is arguably Agatha Christie’s finest creation, next to her own persona of Agatha Christie, Queen of the Whodunit. He’s been played by everybody from Tony Randall to John Malkovich; Peter Ustinov portrayed the deductive sleuth six times, and David Suchet has made a career out of gifting TV viewers with the definitive take on Christie’s murder-mystery icon. Kenneth Branagh looks all set to continue his love affair with the world of Agatha Christie this year, with the pending release of A Haunting in Venice, Branagh's third adaptation of Christie's Hercule Poirot detective novels. Christie's most famous crime-solving creation has been played on TV and in film by a host of world-famous actors over the years, including stars of House Hugh Laurie, Alfred Molina, and Albert Finney, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express.
However, the most successful portrayal was that of David Suchet, who first took on the role for the British TV channel ITV in 1989 and proved so successful with audiences that he went on to play the part for the next quarter-century, retiring only in 2013 after filming 13 series and 70 episodes based on Christie's works, alongside such luminaries of stage and screen as two-time...

Agatha Christie has been writing murder mysteries since it seems almost like the dawn of time. Her two most known characters include Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot has been portrayed in numerous movies, TV shows, and plays. But who has the best portrayal? More recently, we've seen Kenneth Branagh play Detective Poirot in Murder On The Orient Express, and we've seen Peter Ustinov, John Malkovich, Albert Finney, and Alfred Molina portray the detective in one form or another. And they all put their own unique twist on the detective that made the character brilliant. But as you might have guessed, the best would have to be David Suchet. He played Poirot in the series Agatha Christie's Poirot. With a whopping 13 seasons, this British drama has audiences putting together puzzle pieces to solve the mysteries along with Poirot. You can easily watch and re-watch to see all the clues...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been grabbing plenty of headlines and dollars this week but the BBC has turned the clocks back to a different retelling, making its classic series available on iPlayer.
The BAFTA-winning series aired on the BBC more than 40 years ago and is available from today as a boxset on the VoD player.
Sam Waterston was the Cillian Murphy of the series, starring as the titular scientist as he led the weapons laboratory of the Manhattan Project, all the while under constant surveillance by the FBI because of his left wing politics and association with communists. As with Nolan’s movie, the show followed his role in developing the world’s first nuclear weapons and his rivalry with Edward Teller, through to being stripped of his security clearance by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in the 1950s. David Suchet, Kate Harper, John Carson, Christopher Munke and Jana Shelden also starred.

Decades before Christopher Nolan set his sights on a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer, a science-obsessed BBC executive ventured to America in 1979 to make a $1.5 million TV show about the father of the atom bomb.
Peter Goodchild began his career at the BBC in radio drama, but eventually migrated to the storied “Horizon” science unit to put his chemistry degree to some use. The division began experimenting with factual dramas in the 1970s, and after delivering a hit series on French-Polish physicist Marie Curie, Goodchild set his sights on the New York-born Oppenheimer.

It's fair to say that whodunits making a comeback wasn't something to be expected. Yet, with the monumental success of the Knives Out series and the many adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels, it seems like they're here to stay for a few more years. The latter, in particular, has been around for over half a decade, starting with 2017's Murder on the Orient Express. Now, only a year out from A Death on the Nile, we have the next big entry in this murderous mystery franchise.
Originally announced in Spring 2022, A Haunting in Venice will feature the return of director and lead actor Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot. Having retired after the events of A Death on the Nile, he's now tasked with solving a murder at a spiritual séance. But, if things weren't already a little unsettling, there's one little detail we neglected to mention: the séance will take place on Halloween night.

It’s no secret that Rian Johnson’s mystery films, Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022), drew heavy inspiration from the works of Agatha Christie. In fact, Johnson based his charming Southern detective off of Christie’s series of mysteries following the cases of Detective Hercule Poirot. These stories have been adapted time and again by a variety of fantastic actors in the century since the stories were first published. Perhaps the most notable were David Suchet’s acclaimed 25-year run as the character on ITV’s Agatha Christie’s Poirot for which he was nominated for a BAFTA, and Peter Ustinov who played the French detective six different times and is considered by many to be the definitive iteration of the character. Most recently, we’ve seen the stories of Hercule Poirot brought to the big screen by Kenneth Branagh in Murder On The Orient Express (2017) and Death On The Nile...

With the Batman: Arkham series getting an exciting continuation in the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the franchise that began as a "Batman the detective" series is going in more fantastical directions. Still, for fans of the detective aspect of those games, there are plenty out there to enjoy.
Video games are uniquely suited for providing a detective experience, since they allow players to become the investigator, rather than just passively watching a detective story. So when it comes to detective games, which does IMDb rank as the best?

It would seem that even seven years after its original release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still being updated and patched by CD Projekt Red. The game is getting a Next-Gen update with enhanced visuals that will have gamers returning to it to fight monsters and solve mysteries.

When we consider John Malkovich playing a parody of himself in "Being John Malkovich," there comes the question: Why John Malkovich? Why not "Being Kurt Russell" or "Being Alan Rickman," for instance? Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman answered this, saying there was no other actor in mind when he wrote the script, due to Malkovich's "quality of unknowability" (via Rolling Stone).
And there we have the main draw of John Malkovich as a Hollywood actor, a visage that is instantly recognizable yet as inscrutable as the great stone faces of Easter Island. There isn't anyone else remotely like him, which adds to his enigma. Although he had hair when starting out, he's better known for that magnificent bald dome that hints at a mercurial intellect. Beneath that, there is the interrogative, simian brow that can measure degrees of rage or contempt by how many lines Malkovich furrows into it; then the beady yet penetrating eyes,...

There are many mysteries swirling in and around Death on the Nile, director-star Kenneth Branagh’s second attempt, after 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, to sell Agatha Christie’s master sleuth Hercule Poirot — and by extension, a larger Poirotverse — to a new generation of old people. (Let’s not kid ourselves here: This is a film franchise designed to appeal to adults who may or may not be interested in superheroes and droids but still want to go to movies that weren’t shot on iPhones, and it should be embraced as such.

Kenneth Branagh’s sequel to 2017’s stylish and likeable Murder on the Orient Express arrives much delayed and with a vague feeling that it has missed its window. Originally set for a 2019 release; production issues, the pandemic and finally the pretty horrific abuse allegations made against Armie Hammer have pushed the movie back several times. It arrives now, a film that has “boxing day” written all over it, limping out in February with one of its stars mired in scandal, its director on the Oscar campaign for a completely different film – Belfast – and with anticipation seemingly evaporated. Consequently, it’s being greeted as less “Death on the Nile” and more “Snooze on the Ouse”.
And, actually, that’s a shame. Like its predecessor, Death on the Nile is stylish and likeable, it does reasonable justice to Agatha Christie’s precision-engineered plotting, has a set of extremely solid performances, looks sumptuous...

Growing up in a house furnished with the complete written works of Agatha Christie made me a fan of the whodunnit genre from a young age. My mum, an unabashed fan of criminal narratives and detective stories, made sure I was familiar with the figure of Hercule Poirot and, eventually, I too became a fan. While we've long spent joyful evenings sharing our love for the adventures of Belgium's most excellent fictional investigator, we don't always agree about this entertainment.
For instance, our idea of who the perfect on-screen Poirot differs significantly. Her heart belongs to David Suchet's book-faithful incarnation, while I prefer Peter Ustinov's joyful take on the same character. On the centennial of the the two-time Oscar-winning thespian, I thought I could elaborate on why Ustinov is my perfect Poirot…...

Things got meta at this year’s Goteborg Film Festival as Swedish emergency nurse Lisa Enroth, famously isolated for a week on an inhospitable island with no phone, no family and limited outside contact including little more than one outgoing daily video diaries, screened Alistair Morrison’s Covid-19 lockdown isolation documentary “Time to Pause,” with a special message of encouragement from the filmmaker and several of its subjects.
“It must be pretty rough on that island there,” Morrison explained in the pre-recorded message, “but I know that it’s been rougher for you for the last year working with Covid patients.”
It’s clear from the film’s delivery and the way Morrison discusses his work that the sentiment was far more than lip service. His admiration for the front line and essential workers profiled in his film is clear, and his handling of sensitive and sometimes tragic moments in...

David Suchet is one of many actors that many people have likely seen once or twice in the movies, but it’s easy to think that a lot of folks didn’t know his name simply because they didn’t look at the credits, and because he plays a great supporting character but sitting down to movies in which he takes the lead might not be high on the ‘to do’ list for a lot of people. With that in mind, he does feel like a better supporting actor than a lead, but at the same time, one can’t deny that he’s effective

Going back to watch Agatha Christie's Poirot is always a fun endeavor. David Suchet is arguably the actor who better embodies Christie's character, and the adventures of the Belgian detective are enacted down to perfection. Fans of the genre have a real treat in the show, that delivered not only incredible performances by all the actors involved, stunning scenery, and an overall production value that makes it clear why the series remains as popular as when it premiered in 1989.

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.
