What, another docu about Nazis? Rüdiger Suchsland’s show tells the entire story — with many rare clips and interesting actor and filmmaker profiles — of the hundreds of state-produced German films made during the Third Reich. It’s the most thorough, informative and eye-opening show on the subject I’ve yet seen. It comes with revelations about some surprising names, like Douglas Sirk and Ingrid Bergman.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Heinz Emigholz's Streetscapes [Dialogue] (2017) is showing June 18 - July 18, 2018 as part of the series Heinz Emigholz's Streetscapes.“I believe that everyone perceives space differently and that art and structure arise out of the perception of these nuances. The world reveals itself to us, and we show each other the world—not just different facets, but our different views.”—Heinz Emigholz (quoted by Rüdiger Suchsland in German Film Quarterly 3/2013)Heinz Emigholz’s architecture films document practices of devotion—to certain forms, certain materials, certain social ideas. As an ongoing body of work, they also constitute a practice, no less devoted, to a certain way of constructing cinematic space. Anyone who has seen one of these films knows that Emigholz’s way of showing us architecture is highly idiosyncratic. The major feature of his style, the oblique camera angle, defies standards of documentary representation,...

For his entire reign of power, Adolf Hitler used cinema to communicate with his public. Over 1,000 films were produced under the Third Reich, and half of those were unexpectedly musicals or comedies. Hitler’s propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels controlled the German film system, channeling the Nazi’s ideologies through movie theaters and into the minds of the public. Watching Hitler’s Hollywood, a new documentary about the era of Nazi propaganda cinema, one can’t help but be reminded of the conciseness and clear-eyed vision of Tony Zhou’s Every Frame a Painting, a stellar series of video essays about movies. Each episode delivers its entire thesis and conclusion in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, director Rüdiger Suchsland’s Hitler’s Hollywood, a deeply cine-literate essay film which borders on overly dry, makes and remakes its point, over and over again, too often repeating itself.

Take a trip into the depths of German silent film in a documentary that links expressionist cinema with dark political undercurrents. Director Rüdiger Suchsland’s essay adapts a famous & worthy but slightly outdated book, yet is an excellent overview of movies in the Weimar period.

The Telluride Film Festival has announced its 2017 lineup. As usual, the exclusive Colorado gathering features a range of buzzy fall season movies, including many films also premiering in Venice and Toronto as well as others resurfacing from earlier in the year, just in time for awards season. Filmmakers in this year’s program range from Alexander Payne to Angelina Jolie. The festival will also honor cinematographer Ed Lachman, actor Christian Bale, and screen a new cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 Harlem musical “The Cotton Club.”
One of the bigger films to make the cut in this year’s lineup should take no one by surprise: “Downsizing” (12/22, Paramount), Payne’s long-gestating near-future workplace satire starring Matt Damon, will screen at the festival where Payne has been a regular for years (both as a filmmaker and audience member). One of cinema’s preeminent magicians welcomes us with his trademark corpulence and pastiched cigar to the Idfa at Amsterdam in a selection entitled Framing. A self-confessed charlatan making a film about yet another self-contained charlatan, Orson Wells takes immense pleasure in 1973’s F for Fake reminding us that film is by nature trickery whilst hoodwinking us one more time (but gently, a fatherly sort of magician—showing us shot, impossible counter-shot, whilst winking mischievously into the camera). F for Fake is an odd choice for a selection which is, to quote the guide, “investigating the borders between fiction and documentary,” since the film admits no such borders, and for Wells any film base enough to insist on its own reality is the most insupportable form of charlatanry (witness his childlike glee at elbow-jabbing the experts every time forger extraordinaire Elmyr Dehory pulls a fast one on a gallerist).
