The films in the running for the 2023 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our odds currently indicate that “Avatar: The Way of Water” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (39/10), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), “The Batman” (9/2), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (9/2).
Included among the 20 individuals in this lineup are 12 past nominees, five of whom have triumphed at least once. The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” breakout star Stephanie Hsu learned that she’d earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination on Tuesday just after her flight landed in Los Angeles. And the first text message of congratulations to reach her was short and to the point: “Holy s—.”
“I knew that the announcements were happening today and I was flying back from Sydney. I woke up just before it was happening. And then I put my phone on the little tray next to my coffee and it just started going zoing zoing!” Hsu said with a laugh. “I got the news sort of right as I was landing, so I thought I was hallucinating.”
Hsu was just one of many nominees from “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as the film topped all other entries with 11 overall nominations, including acting nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett made superhero cinema history on Tuesday as the first woman, the first person of color and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for their performance in a comic book adaptation. It’s Bassett’s second Oscar nomination; her first came 29 years ago for best actress for 1993’s Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
But while Bassett’s nomination breaks several Oscar barriers, “Wakanda Forever” failed to equal the best picture nod earned by 2018’s “Black Panther” — the first superhero movie ever nominated for Oscar’s top prize. The film was also nominated for Ruth E. Carter for costume design; “Lift Me Up” for original song; Camille Friend and Joel Harlow for makeup and hairstyling; and Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, Hanzhi Tang and Dan Sudick for visual effects.

Almost everything about “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” feels like a leap forward from its predecessor, not just the film’s emotional impact due to the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman before production began but also its scope and scale. “Wakanda Forever” flings its many characters around the globe from Wakanda to America to Talokan, the undersea world led by new antagonist Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia). The herculean effort to bring the new locations to life took a massive team of artisans, including visual effects masters Daniel Sudick, Geoffrey Baumann and Michael Ralla.
“‘Wakanda’ had everything. I can’t think of a type of effect we didn’t do,” Sudick, the production special effects supervisor, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
“It had giant water gags, rain gags, car gags, everything,” he adds, using the parlance of visual effects creators. “It had everything supersized. It was like going through the drive-thru and saying,...

"Firefly" was one of those shows I'd sometimes stumble upon late at night — like "Stargate: Sg-1" over on the SyFy channel or "Silverhawks" — that really stirred up my love for space operas/westerns. I never did sit down to watch the show in order -- at the time I was beholden to whatever episodes were being aired, although I did end up catching multiple viewings of "Serenity." Back then I had no idea that "Firefly" had barely lasted a season on air before being canceled in 2002, or that the film was Joss Whedon's last-ditch effort to keep the series alive in some form.
Eventually, Universal acquired the rights from Fox but refused to approve the over 100 million budget that was estimated to make it, recommending the production move overseas. But Whedon managed to convince them they could make it locally and under budget — which was set at 40 million. To put that into perspective,...

Disney dominated the 18th annual Ves Awards with five nominations apiece for Jon Favreau’s frontrunner “The Lion King” and Robert Rodriguez’s surprising “Alita: Battle Angel” (acquired from Fox). Joining them for the top photo-real prize were the Disney-led “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” along with Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man”. The Ves Awards will be held January 29th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Competing for supporting VFX were Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”, Sam Mendes’ “1917,” (which stitched together the World War I thriller as one continuous shot and offered various enhancements), James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” and “The Aeronauts.”
In animation, Disney also fared well, with Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” (which grabbed five nominations) and “Frozen 2.” They were joined by Golden Globe nominee “Missing Link” from Laika, surprise nominee “Klaus” (the innovative 2D feature from Netflix and Spanish director Sergio Pablos), and,...

Last night, the 17th annual Visual Effects Society Awards were held. The gala represented a moment to honor some of the types of films that don’t usually get cited during the precursor season. Mostly, it’s an opportunity to see which movie or movies are the frontrunners in the Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars. Even beyond the Academy Awards, it’s just a perfect time to honor the craftsmen and craftswomen who do the sort of work that’s too often overlooked. So, even though the Academy voters are looking at this for one specific reason, there’s multiple reasons to take interest in the Ves results from yesterday. Below you can see all of the Ves victors, though leading the way was Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with four wins each. The former actually took the top honor of the night, which is...

Ves Awards 2019: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Win Top VFX Prizes
Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” was the big VFX winner at the 17th annual Ves Awards Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton, grabbing four prizes, including photoreal feature. And Sony’s animated Oscar favorite, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” also scored four awards, including animated feature.
While it’s a significant momentum builder for “Infinity War” in its quest to be the first VFX Oscar winner for the McU (and first superhero winner since 2004’s “Spider-Man 2”), there still remains competition from Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” which won the Ves supporting prize. However, “Infinity War” boasts the stronger CG wow factor in the form of the brilliantly animated Thanos (peformance-captured by Josh Brolin) from Digital Domain and Weta Digital.
“Infinity War” also took home honors for animated character (Thanos), simulations (Titan), and compositing (Titan). “Spider-Verse” additionally snagged animated character (Miles Morales), environment (Graphic New York City), and simulations.

The 17th annual Ves Awards are being handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and Deadline will be live-blogging the affair and updating the winners list live. Patton Oswalt is hosting the Visual Effects Society’s gala, which celebrates the best VFX artistry and innovation in film, animation, TV, commercials and video games across 24 categories.
The winner of the Ves Award for Photoreal Feature has gone on to win the Visual Effects Oscar 10 of the 16 times it has been presented, but it hasn’t been much of a harbinger for the past half-decade or so. Last year the Ves Award went to War for the Planet of the Apes, while the Academy Award was claimed by Blade Runner 2049, as Roger Deakins won for the first time in his 14th nominations. The Jungle Book won both in 2017, but Ves and Oscar failed to match up in either of the previous two years.

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

Last year, Walt Disney Studios reaped a pair of Oscar bids for the the smash hit live-action version of one of its most lauded cartoons, the 1991 Best Picture nominee “Beauty and the Beast.” This year, it has both the long-awaited sequel to “Mary Poppins” and the most successful entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther.”

After breaking numerous box office records since its debut, triumphing at the Oscars is the only industry achievement that Marvel Studios cannot crack. But that could all change in one year’s time. The studio’s new release, “Black Panther,” is the first Oscar contender of 2018.
“Black Panther” marks the first time a black superhero has lead a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Chadwick Boseman brilliantly captures T’Challa, the newly minted king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Could Boseman strike a chord with the academy after failing to register for his acclaimed portrayal of James Brown in “Get on Up?”
Acting nominations have been hard to come by for superhero movies. Heath Ledger is the only person to reap a nomination (and win) for his turn as the Joker in “The Dark Knight.” But the celebrated cast of “Black Panther” should help the film be taken seriously with Oscar voters.

A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.

I recently saw that Mondo is planning to release a vinyl version of the score for Ryan Coogler's Creed, which got me thinking about how utterly fantastic that movie is. I was excited to see what Coogler might do with a sequel (which still might happen), but I'm even more pumped to see what he does with Black Panther, the upcoming film from Marvel Studios. The company just sent out a press release stating that production is underway, and reading the cast list for this thing has me grinning bigger and bigger with every name. This cast is so stacked, it's ridiculous. (I'm not sure if I even knew that Forest Whitaker was in this movie, but I know now.) Read the full press release below, which includes what I believe is the first official synopsis of the film:

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista return to portray Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax, along with Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel lending their voices to Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, and Karen Gillan also return as Yondu, Kraglin, and Nebula.
New faces to join the cast include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Chris Sullivan (The Knick) and Kurt Russell are all officially onboard. Their characters have yet to be revealed, but I really hope Russell plays a bad guy, with a very long mustache perhaps.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

Oh how the tables have turned! While Sci-Fi and Fantasy films normally do well at the box offices while garnering critical acclaim amongst fans, they’re usually snubbed during awards season. However, things seem to be slightly changing with the list of nominees at two recent award shows. There are few hidden gems that almost seem as if they snuck-in with the rest of the bunch.

I misjudged James Wan. When "Saw" was being prepped for release, I was approached by the creative execs at Twisted Pictures, along with my writing partner, about spitballing ideas for sequels, since they already saw it as a franchise. It was one in a flurry of meetings, and we didn't have an immediate reaction, and so we let it go. Didn't really chase it. Smart, right? For a little while, I wasn't really sure what to make of Wan as a director. I didn't like "Dead Silence" much at all, and I wasn't sure what to make of the wild swings in tone in "Death Sentence." It wasn't until the midnight premiere of "Insidious" at the Toronto Film Festival that I was 100% onboard, and it felt like Wan had become a different, more confident filmmaker at that point, like he was serious about his craft in a different way. I...

Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.
And now Matthew McConaughey saunters on stage to announce best actress. Julianne Moore, five times a nominee at the Oscars is the favourite. Will she get it this time for Still Alice? Yes she’s got...

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.
Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!
Wamg was in the thick of nomination morning fever at the home of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...
