“Parasite” is the Oscars success story of the year, winning Best Picture in a first for a non-English-language film and also becoming one of the highest-grossing foreign films of all time at the domestic box office (and it’ll gross even more after its Oscars windfall). But it’s not the only success story of the season. Here are other films whose accomplishments should be celebrated even though they didn’t get the top Oscar.

The 92nd Oscars featured a mix of the expected and the unexpected Sunday, with Neon’s South Korean film Parasite capping the evening by winning Best Picture, making history as the first foreign-language film ever to take the marquee prize.
Parasite director and co-writer Bong Joon Ho made four trips to the Dolby Theater stage, with the film also winning for Directing, Original Screenplay and International Feature.
Other honorees who spent this compressed Oscar season honing their acceptance speeches for tonight were the four Acting winners — all of whom won as expected. That meant statuettes for Joaquin Phoenix (Leading Actor for Joker), Renee Zellweger (Leading Actress for Judy), Brad Pitt (Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Supporting Actress for Marriage Story).
Check out all the winners’ speeches below.

Parasite – Bong Joon Ho
Neon’s film Parasite made Oscar history by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture during the 92nd Academy Awards. Nominated for six Oscars, the film walked away on Sunday night with four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite previously won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival as well as top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
Only 11 international feature films have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category. Bong Joon Ho became the first South Korean to ever win the best director Oscar.
During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

‘Ford v Ferrari’ Editing Duo Celebrate First Oscar Wins; Thank Outgoing Fox Studios Chief Emma Watts
Ford v Ferrari racked up its second Oscar tonight by triumphing in the Film Editing field, with editors Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland both celebrating a debut win.
The high-octane pic followed its BAFTA triumph in the same field by beating close competitor Parasite (going by the bookies’ odds), meaning Oscar didn’t reflect the usually reliable bellwether the Ace Eddie Awards, which feted Parasite (drama) and Jojo Rabbit (comedy) this year.
Taking to the stage to receive the award from presenters Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Buckland gave a shoutout to his family in Argentina, and also thanked the movie’s sound team, who earlier in tonight’s ceremony picked up the Sound Editing prize.
McCusker, who was previously nominated back in 2006 for another James Mangold pic, Walk The Line, made sure to praise his director collaborator. “It has been a great, great pleasure to have sat and watch...

To understand why “Ford v Ferrari” received Oscar nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, all your have to do is listen.
Thanks to three key members of the film’s nominated sound team who spoke with IndieWire — supervising sound editor Donald Sylvester, re-recording mixer and sound designer David Giammarco, and re-recording mixer Paul Massey — IndieWire can share two videos that provide a first-hand demonstration of their work.
Already, the film has swept the sound guild ceremonies: At this year’s Mpse Golden Reel Awards (the guild award for sound editing), it won the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Effects and Foley. While on the surface, director James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” is a story about racing, at the heart of it is a character-driven piece about a renegade named Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and the friendship he forges with Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) as he chases a lifelong dream. For the sound team, the characters of the story were far more important than the mechanics around them.
For production sound mixer Steven Morrow, the focus was capturing the dialogue and emotional arc of the characters. While post would record the brunt of the sound effects Morrow detailed a baseline for them to follow. Special microphones were used to record the dialogue during the intense racing scenes.
“We used Dpa 60 lavaliers both on the actors and for planting on the vehicles,” says Morrow. “You wouldn’t normally use those mics for dialogue scenes as they’re reserved for jet-engine-level noise, but...

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.
Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.

Maybe it’s too much to expect a film titled “Ford v Ferrari” to really touch on anything beyond the heart-pounding 24 hours of 1966’s legendary Le Mans auto race in France, upon which the film is based.
But with a staggering two-and-a-half-hour runtime, you’d think director James Mangold (with writers Jason Keller and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth) would have delved more deeply into the interior lives of its two protagonists, played by Christian Bale and Matt Damon, in order to ground their narrative in something other than adrenaline and testosterone.
There’s certainly lots of opportunity to do so, especially through the intriguing friendship between sports-car engineer and driver Ken Miles (Bale), who competed in the historic race, and driver and car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon), who had previously hired Miles as a test driver before eventually bringing him on board to represent Ford Motor Company at Le Mans.

When talking about Fox’s “Ford v Ferrari,” starring Christian Bale as race car driver Ken Miles and Matt Damon as auto designer Carroll Shelby, director James Mangold stresses the collaborative nature of filmmaking: “The triumph of our editing team is also a triumph of our stunt teams and design teams and cinematographer. They’re all interlocked.” He also notes that while the racing scenes may be memorable, the heart of the film is in the intimate personal scenes.

“I think that the predicaments and the frustrations of these characters, I recognized in our own world, as the fight to get something new or different made, in a system built to make what was made last year,” Mangold said, on a panel for the film at The Contenders Los Angeles, moderated by Deadline’s Joe Utichi. “[There’s] a similarity, in the sense that the costs are high, and the risks are high—and although people like me don’t tend to die making movies, we can disappear, magically, if we fail.”

Renee Zellweger, Antonio Banderas, Laura Dern and Al Pacino are among the pre-announced winners in top categories for the Hollywood Film Awards, which will unofficially launch the 2019 awards season on Sunday, November 3. Actor and comedian Rob Riggle will host the 23rd annual ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
While all of the awards have been arranged in advance by the studios and their campaigners, it is an important stop by contenders looking for success at the Oscars, Golden Globes and elsewhere. That’s because it is the first opportunity for many of the hopefuls to be on an awards red carpet with representatives from a wide variety of films and also be on stage accepting a trophy.

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.
Here are our current predictions in alphabetical order. No movie will be deemed a frontrunner until I see it.
Frontrunners:
Will Files (“War for the Planet of the Apes”)
Richard King (“Dunkirk”)
Mark Mangini (“Blade Runner 2049”)
James Mather (“Wonder Woman”)
Julian Slater (“Baby Driver”)
Contenders:
Craig Berkey (“Darkest Hour”)
Richard Hymns (“The Post”)
Eric A. Norris, Steven Ticknor (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”)
