On day one of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, scribes put their pencils down and hit the pavement at every major studio in Los Angeles. It was May 2 and many were wearing sweaters. Today, 100 days later, they remain as resolute as they began only a little more suntanned as the country faces one of its warmest summers to date.
Notwithstanding the climate, the writers have been challenged in ways they couldn’t have imagined and yet, they keep showing up on the lines. Deadline spoke to multiple regulars, captains and coordinators from various lots as well as WGA leadership.

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
Over the last 100 days, thousands of WGA members took to the streets of major American cities to show solidarity in their pursuit for a fair deal with the major studios. Over that time, striking writers have had to navigate the weather — including, rain, heat and smoke from the Canadian wild fires — issues of physical and mental fatigue, as well as some studios making it damn-near difficult to picket.
There have been unforeseen obstacles and dangers too — who could have predicted that a producer would slam his car breaks within a few feet of striking writers? Or that an unknown employee would order trees to be trimmed right where picketers march?
Here are five incidents or controversies that picketers have had to deal with since May 2.

As the WGA strike clocks 100 days, simply put — the motion picture studios had always been bracing for this.
Unlike the current SAG-AFTRA strike that forced the global shutdown of Hollywood movies including Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3, the WGA strike, though largely considered to be a TV and streaming fight, has left its mark on the motion picture side — most predominantly on initially shaking up the theatrical-release schedule.
Franchise leader Disney was the first studio to overhaul its calendar with the move of 21 movies from 2025 through 2031. Chief among them was the delay of James Cameron’s long-in-the-works Avatar 3 pushing from Christmas 2024 to 2025, and several Marvel projects redated including Phase 6 finales Avengers: Kang Dynasty going from the start of May 2025 to 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars shifting from May 2026 to May 2027. Avatar 5 alone jumped three years,...

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
Since the start of the WGA strike in early May, screenwriter Joe Syracuse has walked the picket line outside the corporate offices of Netflix. Traversing Sunset Boulevard on an almost daily basis has given Syracuse a feeling of both joy and resolve, as it helped him to forge new friendships and to appreciate the youthful energy of his fellow union members.
Little did he know it would end up sending him to the hospital.
On one of his many days picketing in late June, Syracuse made the mistake of eating the last cellophane-wrapped turkey sandwich from the food table. Though a strike captain and his wife/writing partner Lisa Addario told him not to eat it — the sandwich had been sitting in the sun for at least two hours,...

Although it might be important to both the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA that every Los Angeles-area studio have a union presence during the strike, some picket lines hold more weight than others. In other words, it didn’t take long before writers — and much later, the actors — started picking their favorite locales when it came time to protest room sizes, low residuals and the future use of artificial intelligence.
As part of our ongoing coverage of the WGA strike, Deadline has visited every major picket line in the city. It wasn’t long before we figured out who had the best (and worst) turnout based on the conditions, including available sidewalk space, safety — and shade — at each studio, who touted the biggest names, and who attracted the best reunions.

The writers strike has hit Day 100 – the point at which the last walkout by the Writers Guild of America ended in 2008.
It’s a significant juncture, one that Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman, who co-chair the WGA’s negotiating committee, call a “milestone of shame” for the AMPTP.
It also comes five days after the latest attempt to get both sides back to the negotiating table.
That meeting between the WGA West’s Chief Negotiator Ellen Stutzman and her General Counsel Tony Segall and AMPTP boss Carol Lombardini and her team wasn’t as productive as many had hoped.

"Sometimes I feel like you're the only one who gets me." Cinedigm has released the trailer for an amusing indie comedy titled Dear Dictator, which has a goofy, perhaps ridiculous premise. Michael Caine plays a British-Caribbean dictator who is forced to leave his island nation. He decides to move in and hide out with his "pen pal" (is this the 90s?), a young rebellious teenage girl, as played by Odeya Rush (from The Giver, Goosebumps, Almost Friends, Lady Bird). Somehow they make this work in a weird way, and of course he helps teach her how to "start a revolution and overthrow the 'mean girls' in her high school." It's not as bad as it sounds, but it also doesn't look that good either. But, Michael Caine! He's always great, right? The cast includes Jason Biggs, Katie Holmes, Seth Green, and Jordyn Cavros. Check it out if you're intrigued. Here's...

At 84, Sir Michael Caine finally gets the chance to play with Barbies onscreen. He’ll next star as General Anton Vincent — akin to a kindly, English-accented Fidel Castro — who seeks refuge with his teenage American pen pal (Israeli “Lady Bird” actress Odeya Rush) once he’s ousted from his British-Caribbean island. While hiding out in young Tatiana Miles’ closets and garage, the despot enlists her dolls to strategize a takedown of her suburban high school’s clique, The Slushies.
Katie Holmes plays Tatiana’s mom, a doctor’s office employee whose storyline involves getting her toes sucked by her boss (Seth Green). Also part of the comedy’s ensemble is Jason Biggs, cast as the teacher who fails to dissuade Tatiana from beginning her correspondence with Vincent. Set for distribution from Cinedigm, “Dear Dictator” is the latest collaboration of married writer-directors Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse (2016’s “Amateur Night,” a...

Whether it’s crazed Communists threatening to rain nukes on half the planet or overgrown frat boys bullying the other half of the world into cowering submission, there’s not much humor to be found in contemporary world affairs. Clearly what’s needed is a pointed satire highlighting the inherent absurdity governing global politics today, and Coup d’Etat may just fit the bill.

Humorously providing a relatable view on an alternative lifestyle that’s often quickly judged by society is a challenge that not many filmmakers, particularly those who are making their feature film writing and directorial debuts, willing embrace. But up-and-coming married scribes-helmers, Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, intriguingly relied on their unique working experiences as they strived to achieve their Hollywood dreams, with their new comedy, ‘Amateur Night.’ The filmmakers cast spouses Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen to bring their distinctive story to life in ‘Amateur Night.’ The comedy highlights the role reversal of women portraying characters who willingly work illegal and sordid jobs, and don’t experience the residual guilt that accompanies [ Read More ]

Relentlessly maintaining a brazen and confident personality is a key component for women to achieve and preserve a successful business. Embodying that assertive approach is a key element in forming compelling female characters in films. That endearing characteristic is compellingly personified in the lead female characters in the new comedy, ‘Amateur Night,’ which was written and directed by Lisa Addario and her husband, Joe Syracuse. The movie is based on Syracuse’s experiences when he and Addario first moved to Los Angeles to pursue careers in filmmaking. ‘Amateur Night,’ which Cinedigm distributed in New York and Los Angeles theaters this weekend, showcases how a man who’s desperate for a job unknowingly [ Read More ]

"You ready for your 15 minutes, Big Daddy?" Cinedigm has released an official trailer for the upcoming comedy Amateur Night, which feels more like a mainstream studio movie even though it's an indie film. Jason Biggs plays Guy Carter, an insecure expectant father who, unable to find work in his field, accepts a job driving hookers around Los Angeles. The cast includes Janet Montgomery, Ashley Tisdale, Bria L. Murphy, Jenny Mollen and Steven Weber. The synopsis even so cheesy it says, "one long and crazy evening proves to our hero that he is, in fact, up to the task of fatherhood." Yep, looks pretty bad. Have fun. Here's the first trailer for Lisa Addario & Joe Syracuse's Amateur Night, direct from YouTube: Jason Biggs stars as Guy, an out-of-work expectant father desperate to find a job to support his growing family. At the urging of his wife (Jenny Mollen), he answers...

The family comedy with a moral message has been a staple of Hollywood for eons. They have also been a go-to for filmmakers looking to fill cinemas with a family audience, because we all know that the wider the demographic the more box-office right? Wrong. Some of Hollywood’s most recent family comedies have under-performed both critically and commercially. Remember Little Fockers? I do (although I wish I didn’t). That film was enough to put you off watching these types of comedies for life. That being said, the trailer for Parental Guidance actually had me in stitches – not enough to make me want to see the film in the cinema admittedly, but now it’s hitting DVD and Blu-ray I decided it was time to...

Chicago – As the bells toll this Christmas morn, the critical knots are untied and the new comedy, “Parental Guidance,” is deemed to be not bad – even though the marketing might have indicated otherwise. Billy Crystal and Bette Midler make merry and bright as two grandparents taking care of modern kids.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The are three key elements that make the film work – the energy of Crystal and Midler (they never flag), the supporting roles – especially of Marisa Tomei – and it’s a family oriented picture for the holidays that isn’t gag worthy. There is nothing notable about the story, although Crystal is cast as a baseball announcer, which most likely made his New York Yankee-loving soul rise once again from the show business grave. Like a marathon runner who knows his best days are behind him, Crystal does know how to pace this comedy, and save it from the usual...

Los Angeles -- The schmaltz is piled on thick, and if the comedy were any broader it would require an Imax screen, but still there's something touching about how hard Billy Crystal and Bette Midler hustle to peddle the threadbare material that makes "Parental Guidance" a perfectly tolerable, if uninspired, moviegoing experience.
As "the other grandparents" who are given a golden opportunity to bond with their seldom-seen grandchildren, Billy and Bette work double-time, well aware that it's not just the juvenile characters they have to entertain, but also the paying audiences who could count on both of them for a good laugh back in the day.
That they manage to pull their weight even when the achingly formulaic plotting threatens to drag them under is a testament to their "let's-put-on-a-show" spirit. The end result should appeal to audiences, including bonding grandparents and grandkids, looking for a little undemanding holiday cheer.

Here come the grandparents – there go the rules. In other words – we finally have the first clip from the upcoming family comedy Parental Guidance, and as usual, I recommend you to check out great Billy Crystal and (still) super-cute Bette Midler ’cause they look hilarious. And ok, maybe they have no chance against some other films set to open on Christmas Day, but I’m definitely going to give them a try!
So, this family comedy comes from director Andy Fickman who directed the whole thing from a script written by Joe Syracuse, Lisa Addario, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.
Beside Crystal and Midler, Parental Guidance also stars Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott and Bailee Madison, and 20th Century Fox will release the movie on December 25th, 2012!

Led by Billy Crystal, who will always be known to me as Monsters, Inc.’s Mike Wazowski, Parental Guidance will be bringing a warm dose of family comedy this holiday season, hitting theatres in just over a month’s time.
With the film’s release on the horizon, and after seeing the first trailer back in September, a new trailer has landed over at MSN, and we’ve been sent the UK quad poster to go along with.
“Comedy legends Billy Crystal and Bette Midler play Artie and Diane Decker, who are called in by their daughter (Marisa Tomei) to help care for their three grandkids.
When their old-school parenting methods collide with their daughter’s new-school ways, the once-orderly household spins out of control.”
Crystal stars alongside Bette Midler (Beaches), Marisa Tomei (The Ides of March), Tom Everett Scott (Southland), Bailee Madison, Joshua Rush, and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf.

Family – they are always there for you. Like it or not! We have an international trailer for the upcoming family comedy Parental Guidance, and I’m sure you’re going to love this! I mean, we have two comedy legends on board for a movie which has quite simple message: here come the grandparents – there go the rules! Especially if your grandparents are Billy Crystal and Bette Midler…
The movie comes from director Andy Fickman and centers on Artie and Diane who agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-a helicopter parents go away for work.
But when 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane’s old school methods of tough rules, lots of love and old-fashioned games, it’s learning to bend – and not holding your ground – that binds a family together.
As I said, Crystal and Midler play Artie and Diane, while Marisa Tomei and Tom Everett Scott...

The best human performance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes might have come from David Oyelowo, who played a character with more complexity than that film’s own lead. He’s actually been getting people’s attention for some time now, with Lee Daniels hiring him to play Martin Luther King Jr. in his failed biopic, Selma. (They’ll still be working together on The Paperboy.)
According to THR, one of his next projects might be One Shot, the Lee Child adaptation that stars Tom Cruise. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the story follows Jack Reacher, a man investigating the murder of five people by a sniper in a major city. Already co-starring is Rosamund Pike in the part of the female lead and love interest; Oyelowo is in talks for another big supporting role, playing “a veteran homicide detective investigating the shooting.” I’m sure he...
