In the first few minutes of his first Zoom casting call with actor Alex Wolff, Oystein Karlsen knew he had found his Leonard Cohen.
“He came on the screen like this,” the Norwegian director and screenwriter puts his hand over his face, with one eye poking out. “He said: ‘Sorry, I’m so hung over. I know I’m not going to get the role. I feel horrible.’ I thought: That’s Leonard!”
Karlsen already had his eye on Wolff to play the famously melancholic Canadian singer-songwriter in his new TV miniseries about Cohen and Marianne Ihlen, his great love, muse and the woman who inspired the song that gives the series its title: So Long, Marianne.

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

Bel Powley Says She Was ‘Blown Away by How Contemporary’ Making Holocaust Drama ‘A Small Light’ Felt
This story about Bel Powley and “A Small Light” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Like so many of us, Bel Powley read “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank when she was in school. But she was less familiar with the woman responsible for the world’s awareness of the diary: Miep Gies. The secretary of Otto Frank, Gies helped hide the Frank family from the Nazis for two years in Amsterdam and kept Anne’s diary safe after the family was arrested in 1945.
“I know a lot about this part of history — the big historical and political backdrop — but I didn’t know anything about Miep or the Dutch resistance,” Powley said. So playing Gies in the National Geographic limited series “A Small Light” was a daunting experience — but also a deeply rewarding one. “It’s so rare...

National Geographic's A Small Light continues tonight with another two episodes.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at what's ahead, and it looks like things are going from bad to worse for Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber).
In the clip, we see Miep (Bel Powley) speak to Otto about recent events and how things might change very soon.
Otto is worried about the Nsb officer snooping around, but Miep tries to calm him down.
With his back pushed against the wall, Otto ponders what will happen next.
It's an excellent look at the series and how Miep tries to help Otto by making him realize that he's a wonderful father and has made the right decisions.
Based on an inspiring true story, Miep Gies (Bel Powley) was young, carefree and opinionated — at a time when opinions got you killed ― when Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) asked her to help hide his...

Bel Powley is an actor without subterfuge, which I mean only as a high compliment. I feel the same way about Florence Pugh. Their characters are still capable of lying, but neither performer can lie to the camera. When they’re miserable, it bursts through the screen. When they’re joyful, it’s contagious.
Powley is an interesting and effective choice, then, to play the lead in A Small Light, an eight-part NatGeo limited series that’s all about hiding and subterfuge. Playing an ostensibly ordinary woman who responds to an extraordinary challenge by finding the hero within, Powley sets the tone, or rather a variety of tones, for A Small Light. She brings more humor and hopeful energy than you might expect based on the topic, and underlines every emotionally crushing twist and turn you’d expect from a series adjacent to one of the most beloved and devastating stories ever told.

In the dozen years since he began his acting career as a recurring cast member on the Irish soap opera “Fair City,” Barry Keoghan has played nearly three dozen film and TV roles in such popular projects as “Dunkirk” (2017) “Chernobyl” and “Eternals” (2021). This gives the 30-year-old a shot at making history as the youngest male winner of multiple SAG Awards for a single film.

Before "Peaky Blinders" built to its thrilling climax in the final season, pitting Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby against his own flesh and blood Michael Gray (Finn Cole) in a power grab for the ages, the popular BBC series largely featured one primary antagonist per season -- often portrayed by established character actors or even big-name stars. Early seasons saw the street gang come up against the relentless Inspector Campbell. Soon followed Noah Taylor as mobster Darby Sabini, Paddy Considine's loathsome priest Father Hughes, Sam Claflin as fascist Oswald Mosley, and even Tom Hardy as sometimes-enemy, sometimes-ally, Alfie Solomons across the entire show's run.
"Peaky Blinders" took a turn, however, once Adrien Brody turned up in all his stereotypically New York/Italian glory as the formidable Luca Changretta in season 4. Vowing revenge on Tommy Shelby and his entire family for the brutal killing of his father, the mobster ended...

With popular actor Cillian Murphy in the lead role as gangster Tommy Shelby and a formidable ensemble cast backing him up, "Peaky Blinders" has never shied away from star power. From the series premiere in 2013 to this year's grand finale (an upcoming feature film will continue the adventures of the Shelby clan), every season has featured a name-brand star or well-known character actor taking on the role of the main villain. That impressive list includes such esteemed names as Sam Neill, Noah Taylor (of "Game of Thrones" and "Preacher" fame), "House of the Dragon" star Paddy Considine, Sam Claflin ("The Hunger Games") as the fascist Sir...

One of my favorite bits of This Had Oscar Buzz’s year in review episodes is the segments where they discuss a film that overcame its middling quality to cash in on their buzz and score with the Academy. This is the energy I bring to you for my 25th anniversary retrospective of Shine, an Australian film that copped seven Oscar nominations and a Best Actor prize for Geoffrey Rush in his starmaking role. I do not remember hearing or reading a single solitary comment about this film in the years since I became a cinephile. The closest I’ve ever gotten comes courtesy of folks sticking up for their personal pet among 1996’s Best Actor lineup, or scattered comments that Geoffrey Rush was better in his other nominated performances. It’s slim pickings, and having finally seen Shine for myself, I find very little of worth to really excavate here.

Audiences have known her as Thandie Newton for over 30 years. Now, the Westworld actress has revealed that is not her real name. Her real name is Thandiwe Newton.
Newton’s full name is Melanie Thandiwe Newton. Thandiwe is pronounced “tan-dee-way” and it means “beloved”. In an interview with British Vogue, she revealed that her name was misspelled in the credits of her first film in 1991, Flirting which co-starred Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor. As a result, Thandie Newton has stuck for over three decades. It’s not known why she waited so long to revert to the real spelling of her name — but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that we refer to her as Thandiwe Newton from here on out.
“The thing I’m most grateful for in our business right now is being in the company of others who truly see me,” said Newton in the interview with British Vogue.

The creation of the supporting Oscar categories in 1937 clarified the intention that the lead acting categories are meant to honor true star turns. While most Best Actor wins have aligned with that idea, there have been more than a few whose placement has been called into question due to low screen time. Here is a look at the 10 shortest winners in the category:
10. Gary Cooper (“High Noon”)
40 minutes, 57 seconds (48.35% of the film)
Five-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Cooper earned his second win in 1953 for playing morally conflicted Marshal Will Kane in “High Noon.” By appearing in less than half of the 85-minute film, Cooper made history by holding two screen time records at once. At the time, his one-hour, 30-minute, 55-second performance in 1941’s “Sergeant York” was the longest to have won in the Best Actor category. His second win broke a 21-year record for shortest, which was previously held...

Massacre this, massacre that… Thanks to the infamy of Tobe Hooper’s now-classic 70s exploitation shocker The Texas Chainsaw Massacre it seems that we can’t escape a horrifying cinematic massacre… The latest film to share this horror moniker is The Windmill Massacre – an odd title, and an even odder location for a horror movie. But, to steal a much-maligned English idiom, don’t judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, a film by it’s title.
The Windmill Massacre tells the story of Jennifer, an Australian girl on the run who – after having her secret discovered at the Amsterdam home she works at as a nanny – joins a coach load of tourists on an idyllic rural tour of Holland’s world-famous windmills. However when...

Playing a villain in a movie is a great career move for an actor, but playing a real life, universally known monster like Adolf Hitler is not necessarily a decision that’s made lightly. Even in the history of countless movie Nazis, having the guts and gravitas to actually play Hitler is something else entirely. Taika Waititi, who portrays a satirical, imaginary version of Der Fuhrer inside a young boy’s mind for his latest film “Jojo Rabbit,” only got his movie made under the studio’s condition that he play the part of Hitler. But he’s not the only one who made that leap:
Anthony Hopkins – “The Bunker” (1981)
Though he’s more famous for his other villainous turn as Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins portrayed Hitler during his downfall era as the Fuhrer was hiding out in an underground bunker. “The Bunker” was a three-hour, TV movie event on CBS,...

Spoiler Warning: This article reveals major plot points for tonight’s series finale of Preacher on AMC.
Preacher, on paper, seemed like a television pitch that didn’t have a prayer. The fact that Sunday night marked the end of the fourth and final season of the AMC series from executive producers Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg would qualify as a miracle if the show’s brimstone scent and penchant for the profane didn’t disqualify it from general competition.
For four seasons, the show followed the wild-eyed quest of Dominic Cooper’s Jesse Custer, the West Texas preacher with a grim job history. His entire flock in West Texas was flattened and killed when he became possessed by a supernatural entity (who turned out to be the offspring of an unnatural coupling...

The 2011 film “Hanna” was a delicious surprise. Directed by prestige moviemaker Joe Wright, “Hanna” played like an artist’s frantic attempt to cram in all the wild impulses he wasn’t allowed elsewhere, while retaining a certain fundamental elegance. Saoirse Ronan played a teen trained from childhood to be a killing machine for reasons that never quite become clear. Engaged in cat-and-mouse warfare with Cate Blanchett’s compulsive CIA officer, Ronan’s Hanna sprinted through dazzlingly constructed frames as a propulsive techno score (composed by the Chemical Brothers) blared — and the movie never lost its balance or its control.
That filmic achievement, the ability to remain upright in the midst of mania, is what makes Amazon’s new series adaptation of “Hanna” so disappointing. The new show lacks the glimmering creativity of its source material, and, perversely enough, it manages to feel overstuffed despite its relative lack of inventive flourishes.

The way Rami Malek got under Freddie Mercury’s skin and brought him to life again in “Bohemian Rhapsody” was no small miracle. It is similar to how Gary Busey became a star when he uncannily channeled the‘50s rock icon in 1978’s “The Buddy Holly Story.” Or when Joaquin Phoenix was able to capture Johnny Cash’s charisma and his tumultuous dark side in 2005’s “Walk the Line.”
But neither Busey nor Phoenix won in their years. In fact, besides Malek, only five lead actors have been given an Oscar for playing real-life music makers – although it interesting that Mahershala Ali earned a corresponding supporting statuette as concert pianist Don Shirley in “Green Book” this year as well.
Who are these fellows and what traits might their roles have in common?

the actress at Venice a month ago
Happy 50th birthday to Naomi Watts, born on this day in England. Many of us think of her as an Australian actress since that's where she first emerged but she didn't move there until she was 14. The first two movies I personally saw her in were Flirting (1991) and Tank Girl (1995). Flirting really ought to be enshrined and preserved for eternity since it gave us early looks at four enduring careers. Naomi has a small role but the three principal players are Nicole Kidman, Noah Taylor, and Thandie Newton.
Naomi is so young in this clip of the girls "arriving" to a cross-school dance, that she's almost unrecognizable. She's the one in the pink with her hair up. But it's Nicole and Thandie that the cameras follow...

As we gear up for this Sunday’s season three finale of AMC’s “Preacher” we are taking a look back at our chat with the cast and crew of the series that took place at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Series stars stars Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, and Joseph Gilgun, along with executive producer/showrunner Sam Catlin and executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg definitely gave us quite a bit of insight about the overall oddness that encompassed this season, as well as, shedding some light on what is to come in the future.
In the season finale we will see Jesse take on Marie ‘Gran’ma’ L’Angelle (Betty Buckley) – who has sided with Satan (Jason Douglas) – to get her back for years of abuse, but first he’ll have to battle her henchmen Jody (Jeremy Childs), who killed Jesse’s father, and Tc (Colin Cunningham).
