Filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include About Last Night, Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Love & Other Drugs, Pawn Sacrifice, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (not to mention co-creating Thirtysomething), recently published a memoir called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood (pick up a copy Here). This book contains some very interesting passages – like the one on Zwick’s Jack Reacher regrets, and another where he reveals how impressed Denzel Washington was by Matt Damon’s performance when they were on the set of Zwick’s 1996 film Courage Under Fire.
Zwick wrote, “As we finished Matt’s coverage, Denzel caught my eye and nodded approvingly. Later, he took me aside. ‘Who is that kid?’ he asked. I told him it was Matt’s first big role. ‘Damn,’ he said. ‘Better get my game on. He almost blew me off the screen.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” led all series at Monday night’s Astra TV Awards, scoring six trophies — including best streaming drama series. HBO’s “Succession” was close behind with five wins, including best cale drama series.
Organized by the newly renamed Hollywood Creative Alliance, the also-redubbed Astra TV Awards were formerly known as the Hca TV Awards. The Astras are unique in separating broadcast, cable and streaming into their own categories.
In broadcast, the biggest winner of the night was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won four prizes — including best broadcast network comedy series.
Also on Monday, “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke was presented with the TV Icon award, while composer Ariel Marx (“A Small Light”) was given the Artisan Spotlight award. Comedian Aida Rodriguez hosted the event, which was produced by Diga Studios and Content.23 Media and held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).
Possible Golden Globes newcomer Fishback stars on Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm” as Dre Greene, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop star drives a wedge between her and her foster sister,...

“There was something fishy about that particular kerfuffle.”
Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) is perplexed. Sitting in his partner’s car, driving away from their thwarted attempt to ensnare Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), the Floridian Marshal (by way of Kentucky) can’t put his finger on what, exactly, is going on in Detroit. He knows what’s been done and who did it. He knows where to find the man he’s looking for. And yet, try as he might, Raylan can’t seem to keep the cuffs on his bounty.
“I wonder if anybody’s that lucky,” Raylan says. “I wonder if some combination of this dead judge and this alleged book and this particular shitbird are making people act in ways they otherwise wouldn’t. And I feel like I do when I’m being played a fool.”

CSI: Vegas had some big shoes to fill since the spin-off started in 2021 because the original series was a fan-favorite and ran for 15 seasons.
CSI: Vegas Season 1 focused on establishing the team and ridding the team of the scandal that Hodges was accused of. They needed Grissom and Sara’s expertise to do that.
During CSI: Vegas Season 2, they brought Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) back to have another legacy character to entice long-time characters. Catherine interacted with more of the newer characters on a variety of cases, but she was gone for a few episodes at a time, which would disrupt the flow of her stories.
The season had its ups and downs as it struggled to find a mystery viewers cared about. Instead, the series excelled by featuring character-centric storylines or episodes that expanded on each character’s personality and family.

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

With two-time Best Comedy Actress Emmy champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”) out of contention this year, “Abbott Elementary” star (and creator and writer) Quinta Brunson is in a solid position as the category’s frontrunner. After Rue McClanahan and Tina Fey, she would be the third actress to take this prize for her show’s second season after losing for its first. At age 33, she would also be the youngest Black woman to ever earn multiple nominations for this award and could close a four-decade gap between Black winners in the category.
To date, the only Black actress who has ever been honored by the TV academy for a lead comedic performance is Isabel Sanford, who triumphed in 1981 on her third of seven consecutive bids for “The Jeffersons.” She was preceded by just one other Black nominee – Diahann Carroll – and has since been followed by five more, including Brunson. If you thought that CBS’ CSI: Vegas was done with Greg Sanders so soon, rest assured that there is more of CSI vet Eric Szmanda to come.
Szmanda — who has more than 330 episodes of the Og CSI under his belt — marked his return to the franchise amidst the emotionally charged March 30 episode that guest-starred Regina Taylor. But Greg will be seen at least two more times, in the episodes airing this Thursday, April 13 (in which the team investigates a bomb that detonated at a masquerade party for wealthy casino investors) and then May 4.

“CSI: Vegas” star Paula Newsome (Max) went home every night exhausted while shooting the latest episode of the CBS drama in which the remains are found of a young girl who had been missing for 40 years. Even though the child and the story itself were creations of the CBS show’s writers, the emotional toll was so palpable that Newsome came to understand why most homicide detectives call it quits after serving 10 years.
The heartbreaking story of “The Promise” began when remains of a child were found in a garbage drum on the floor of Lake Mead. The CSI team learned that the Jane Doe went missing four decades earlier – and the circumstances that led up to her disappearance as well as the lingering pain of the child’s mother were equally as tragic.

Did you cry? CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17 was one the most emotional episodes of the franchise as Max Roby discovers the body of a young girl who was murdered 40 years ago and promises the skeptical mom justice.
TV Fanatic had the pleasure of talking to CSI Franchise creator Anthony Zuiker, actress Paula Newsome, and guest-star Regina Taylor about the emotional moments of this Emmy-worthy episode and the deleted scenes.
I had so much fun chatting with the three of them. Check out the interview below:
So, Anthony, what inspired you to write this episode featuring both of these talented women?
Anthony: Well, once upon a time this season, I wrote a show called Koala that you wrote about earlier. Then Paula Newsome pulled me aside and said I want my Koala.
I went to Austin, Texas, for five days, watched Karen Taylor's' masterclass on facial reconstruction, and brought that tactical science back to the show.

The best episodes of CSI are the ones where the criminologists get emotionally involved in the case.
That was certainly the case on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17, written by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker.
As the mother of an only child, Maxine couldn't help but get pulled into solving this 41-year-old murder.
The storyline was timely, as, thanks to global climate change, bodies of water are starting to give up their dead.
What a perfect opportunity to tackle a cold case!
But if the victim had been just another Vegas thug, it wouldn't have resonated like finding a young Jane Doe in a barrel. The mob has long taken advantage of the Nevada environment for stashing bodies.
The CSIs can toil in obscurity when investigating many of their cases. The public often doesn't care.
But the media ran with this discovery of a body in a barrel. So there was added...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17, “The Promise.”] “I want me a ‘Koala’!” Paula Newsome told franchise creator Anthony Zuiker (referring to the Marg Helgenberger-centric episode earlier this season), and she got it with the latest CSI: Vegas. When a young girl’s remains are found 40 years after her murder, her mother (Regina Taylor) doesn’t exactly trust the cops … until Max proves she can. Zuiker, who co-wrote the episode (with Alex Berry), and Newsome take us inside the powerful hour. Anthony, why did you want to tell this story? Anthony Zuiker: One of my goals this season was to write two big solos, one for Marg Helgenberger [“Koala”], [and] one for Paula Newsome. I knew that based on the bodies in the barrel that were found in Lake Mead kind of linked to mob hits was one way to go. I didn’t want to do a cliché mob story, but I...

Fifty-two years ago, Gail Fisher (“Mannix”) followed Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) as the second Black woman to win an acting Golden Globe and the first to be so honored for a supporting TV performance. A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.
Linney came up short in 2021’s drama actress race against “The Crown” star Emma Corrin, who has passed her role of Princess Diana on to current supporting nominee Elizabeth Debicki. Her other three former challengers...

The 1971 Golden Globes marked the first instance of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowing awards for supporting TV performances. The inaugural male and female recipients of these two prizes were James Brolin and Gail Fisher (“Mannix”), both of whom had won Emmys for the same roles eight months earlier. Fisher followed Diahann Carroll as the second Black woman to win a Golden Globe in any acting category, and, five decades later, remains the only Black Best TV Supporting Actress champ. She could, however, finally have company if Niecy Nash (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) catches the attention of enough voters this year. And Nash would make history in her own right by becoming the first Black actress to win a Golden Globe for any limited series.

Viola Davis is speaking out about online critics of her performance as Michelle Obama in Showtime's The First Lady.
The star said that negative feedback on her work can be "incredibly hurtful" and that her job as an actor is to "make bold choices."
Davis opened up in an interview with BBC News and reiterated that she "doesn't have any personal contact" with Obama, so she has no idea how the former first lady feels about her performance.
The former How to Get Away with Murder star said that it is “incredibly hurtful when people say negative things about your work.”
“How do you move on from the hurt, from failure?” she wondered.
“But you have to. Not everything is going to be an awards-worthy performance.”
The star said that "critics absolutely serve no purpose," adding that she wasn't "saying that to be nasty."

Being the First Lady is never the second hardest job.
Showtime’s anthology drama series “The First Lady” captures the legacy of three former FLOTUSes: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis).
“The First Lady has to be a special kind of woman,” Pfeiffer as Ford explains in the trailer, while Davis’ Obama pushes back against being branded as the “Black Martha Stewart.”
Meanwhile, Anderson’s Roosevelt tells President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Kiefer Sutherland) that she has her own life, which seems to include a love affair with Lorena “Hick” Hickok, played by Lily Rabe.
“The First Lady” premieres Sunday, April 17, with a special Presidents’ Day weekend installation featuring out-of-home advertising and digital projections, near federal landmarks in highly trafficked travel locations, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago.

In All Day and a Night, the new Netflix crime film from writer/director Joe Robert Cole, Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) plays Jahkor Abraham Lincoln, a young Oakland man whose life in one of that city’s most underserved communities has come to an all-too-familiar crossroads: does he follow in the path of his currently jailed father J.D. (Jeffrey Wright) and plunge full-on into a life of crime and gang culture, or does he pursue a different path — he wants to be a rapper and has started making his own mixtapes — and try to break the cycle for the sake of his newborn son?
Actually, as the film begins, that decision seems to be all but moot. Like way too many films these days, All Day and a Night begins near the end: we meet Jahkor as he commits a brutal, heartless crime and then watch as the movie retraces...
