The Dr. Seuss Enterprises lawsuit against us is finally over.
In August 2016, we put up a Kickstarter for Oh, The Places You’ll Boldly Go!, a mash-up of Star Trek and Dr. Seuss to be written by David Gerrold, drawn by Ty Templeton, edited by Glenn Hauman, and published by ComicMix LLC later that year. Dse sent us a cease and desist letter on September 27, 2016. Dse filed a DMCA motion to take down the Kickstarter campaign on October 7, and filed suit against us on November 10, 2016, alleging copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and unfair competition.
We put up a good fight. We defeated the trademark infringement and unfair competition claims, and that win was affirmed on appeal. We also won summary judgment on the claim of copyright infringement, though that was reversed on appeal. The court set a pretrial schedule in September 2021 and we were well positioned to have a jury resolve...

Batman: The Adventures Continue has been like a warm blanket amidst the cold horror of ::waves at everything::, giving Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Ty Templeton the chance to come home to the universe they tended for years and build on ideas and relationships from the old show. And now, a big name from the comics is making his way into animated continuity for the first time.
Chapter nine of Batman: The Adventures Continue is titled “Red Son Rising, Part 1,” and introduces Red Hood to the world of the cartoon. It’s the start of what DC is calling “the home stretch” of Dini, Burnett, Templeton, colorist Monica Kubina, and letterer Josh Reed’s run, and it looks like, from the preview art, Joker is going to force the issue with the Red Hood, who has been hunting him for a while.

Issue 5 and, rather shamefacedly, I have been taking this book for granted already. The problem is, I know it’s going to be good before I even start reading it, so worry I will struggle to balance a fair critique. You know what though? Part of reviewing books is to also draw attention to good books, ones that people should be picking up, and to date this is one of those books. It has a Silver Age purity to it, characters unburdened by the increasingly convoluted main DC Universe, but with a little hint of danger. Continuity replaced by good storytelling? by fun? Oh, the horror.
So, what’s been occurring? Well, Deathstroke has. Injecting a little more nastiness into the DC Animated universe, he’s arrived to put Batman and team through their paces. The...

In the early days of this pandemic we find ourselves all in the idea flew around Twitter of doing a modern take on the Marvel/DC Amalgam of the mid 90’s. Just to put some commentary on to this idea, I’m sure it was suggested with the best intentions and it certainly got people talking online. In my opinion I don’t think such a project would help in a big a way as predicted. You see time and time again comic shop owners saying ‘event’ comics don’t bring a surge of new costumers. Why would this be different, especially when you add in the doubts over the industries future. Anyway enough negativity. All the posts about a Marvel/DC Amalgam made me dive into my long boxes and dig out two Wolverine-centric issues to talk about here.

The first issue of this book was something of a critical darling, was it not? Completely understandable of course, as it was superb stuff. Superb in the sense it pulled us back into the Batman animated universe as though it had never been away, superb in the sense that Burnett, Dini, and Templeton made us wish that they never had been away, and superb in the sense that once again we can see that sometimes less means more. At first glance the animated style of the book looks simplistic and unsophisticated, but get drawn in and it’s as rich a world as you’ll find anywhere. Burnett and Dini also kept to previously established animated universe continuity and, if you know anything about comic fandom, that’ll get you a knighthood right there.

If you weren’t excited to see this book hit the stands, then you can just collect up all your stuff and get out right now. Batman: The Animated Series, which aired in the early to mid 1990′s, is probably the most beloved of animated shows, and its influence on comics in general has been huge. Some people will still swear it has the best depiction of Batman, in any medium, full stop, and it’s not easy to argue with that. Some of you younger fans may be thinking, so what, an old animated show, means nothing to me. Like the character of Renee Montoya? First appeared in the show. How about Harley Quinn? Yep, show first, comics later. There are also too many continuity changes and changes of style to mention here but, huge influence as I said.

There are few comic creators alive today who have had a greater influence on Batman and Gotham City than Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Ty Templeton. Dini and Burnett brought Batman: The Animated Series into our homes – Dini co-creating the series, Burnett as one of its earliest writers and producers – launching the original DC Animated Universe, and Templeton wrote and drew much of the in-continuity tie in comic, regarded by many as one of the best Batman comics of all time. When it was announced that the three would return to that universe for a new digital-first comic from DC, Batman: The Adventures Continue, the first question that leaps to mind is how things might have changed in this version of Gotham City.

The appeal still grinds onward, Dr. Seuss hasn’t quit,
’cause they’ve got lots of moolah to indulge their… snit.
But we’re pleased to announce and happy to report
more people are taking our side in the court.
We fight to express, and these people agreed
the expressions created are something we need.
So let it be heard throughout the whole land
that these types of mashups ought not to be banned!
Many have helped us to fight shibboleths
So in no real order, we must thank (deep breaths…)
Philip Malone and his crew at Stanford,
and everyone on Otw’s board.
Hat tip, Dave and Mags! Grazie, Public Knowledge!
Thanks, Francesca Coppa from Muhlenberg College!
And Dogan and Gerhardt and Grinvald and Ramsey,

It wasn’t very long ago that I expressed my gratitude to the folks behind Michigan Comic Con for allowing geeks in my home state to partake in yet another sizable event geared toward those of our persuasion. And after being one among thousands to file into Cobo Arena this past weekend, I can say that, perhaps like those of you reading this, I’d made memories to last a lifetime.
Aside from running into many friends I’ve made over the years frequenting the convention scene, I, of course, made a few new ones along the way. Not only that, but the late addition of Kevin Conroy to the guest list was something that was much appreciated, for I’ve yet to see him at a show in this area. Needless to say, the man whom many regard as being the definitive voice of Batman was easily among the...

Being someone who’s covered conventions of varying sizes around southeast Michigan for the past five years, I’ve been clamoring for another big event aimed at the comic book crowd to come to Detroit. Like many of you, I feel that just one hasn’t been enough, and though the small and mid-sized shows are certainly lots of fun, there’s just nothing like a sprawling showroom floor populated by vendors, writers, artists and healthy amount of celebrities.
Well, soon enough, that’s going to change once the first ever Michigan Comic Con arrives in downtown Detroit this August, which is sure to satisfy our geeky needs for the summertime. And seeing as how it’s brought to us by the same folks behind Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Indiana and Atlanta Comic Cons, I think it’s safe to say we’re all in for a weekend to remember.

In August of ’16, we thought up a plan
If we could get all of the language to scan
We’d mash up the book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”
Combine it with themes from that old Star Trek show
And demonstrate how they (with new illustrations)
Both seek out new life forms and new civilizations
As through endless journeys protagonists barreled
And so it was written up by David Gerrold
With lovely artwork drawn by Ty Templeton
They both made a book that could not be outdone!
We were very respectful, not lewd, rude, or crude.
We thought it was wonderful…!
…then we got sued.
Oh, the uses Seuss sued! There were fights to be picked!
There was art to suppress! Punishments to inflict!
Before the last drawing had seen final touches
Word made its way to the ears...

Yesterday, Judge Janis Sammartino handed down a ruling in our ongoing case, Dr. Seuss Enterprises v. ComicMix, allowing the case to proceed to discovery while narrowing the allegations in significant ways. Buried in the order is a very important point that has implications for the entire comics industry, to wit (with footnotes and citations omitted):
Plaintiff claims Defendants misappropriated “the unique illustration style [of] the characters and backgrounds found throughout Dr. Seuss books, that have come to be instantly recognized by consumers as source identifiers for Dr. Seuss.” Defendant argues trademark law does not protect an artistic style. …
Most courts have held there is no trademark protection for the “style” of an artist. Style is a matter more properly protected by copyright law. …

With just weeks to go until the release of the next DC animated movie, Batman and Harley Quinn, you could say that dropping a prequel comic couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. Sure, the publisher could’ve put just anybody on this project hoping to cash in on the name value of the co-headliners, but the aptly titled Harley Quinn and Batman is so much more.
Thanks to the fan favorite creative team of writer Ty Templeton and artist Rich Burchett, this digital first series feels like a true continuation of The New Batman Adventures in every possible way. Batman has long been one of DC Entertainment's tentpole properties. In August the Dark Knight's latest animated movie Batman and Harley Quinn will be released. DC also announced that ahead of the animated movie, the company will release a digital comic book prequel and a comic book sequel.
The digital comic will be written by and feature art from the creative team behind DC's fan-favorite comic book based on the 1990s Batman The Animated Series, Ty Templeton and Rick Burchett.
Harley Quinn and Batman will be a five-part series that takes place before the events in the animated movie. The series will launch on July 31th with new episodes released every two weeks after that. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Batman and Harley Quinn, and understandably so. Aside from being the next DC animated film to arrive in what’s already been a solid year for the line, it unites two of the most popular characters in comics right now under the watch of the Clown Princess of Crime’s co-creator, Bruce Timm. Suffice it to say, when one of the minds behind Batman: The Animated Series is attached to a project, it’s going to instil some consumer confidence.
Now, if you’ve been keeping up to date with all the latest news regarding the movie (or just watched the trailer embedded at the top), then you’ve no doubt noticed a reprisal of the visual style The New Batman Adventures (or the “revamp episodes,” as they’re sometimes called) were known for.

On Friday, June 9, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California partially granted ComicMix LLC’s motion to dismiss the Dr. Seuss estate’s copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit over the book Oh, the Places You’ll Boldly Go! To prevent publication, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, LP filed the lawsuit in 2016 against the book’s publisher ComicMix, its author David Gerrold, illustrator Ty Templeton, and Glenn Hauman, ComicMix’s co-founder and vice-president.
United States District Judge Janis Sammartino dismissed the trademark claims under the doctrine of nominative fair use, and largely agreed with ComicMix’s position that fair use protects the book from copyright infringement claims. Judge Sammartino found that the book is “a highly transformative work that takes no more than necessary [from Dr. Seuss’s books] to accomplish its transformative purpose and will not impinge on the original market for Plaintiff’s underlying work.” She emphasized that the case has broader...

We are pretty excited that Wonder Woman is coming to the big screen next month!
The epic superhero movie stars Gal Gadot who plays Diana, a trained warrior and princess of the Amazons. After learning from an American war pilot (played by Chris Pine) about the ongoing events of a world war, she leaves her sheltered life for London, to bring an early end to the conflict.
In anticipation for the movie, our very own Tanner Zee visited with comic artist/writer Ty Templeton, (who used to draw Wonder Woman as part of the Justice League comic book) to learn how to illustrate the heroine herself and get a little backstory on the history of this iconic character.

Although the recently rebooted line of Archie Comics have found quite a bit of success and helped immensely with rejuvenating interest in the publisher, longtime fans expressed some concern with the fact that the classic art style the brand has become known for had been jettisoned, and that a more dramatic tone was beginning to be favored over that of a more comedic one. Well, worry no more because Your Pal Archie is on its way and may very well be the book for you.
Aside from having that familiar taste, readers will no doubt be delighted to learn who the creative team is for this all ages title: artist Dan Parent and writer/inker Ty Templeton. Truth be told, the looks and fashion styles of the characters will be heavily influenced by that of...

This past weekend my wife and I tried to be adults, but Fandango’s inexplicable Ui rendered my better/prettier/sexier/amazinger half confuzzled. The tickets we purchased to see “Split” by M. Night Shamalamadingdong were for the wrong date (as in three days prior to when we were currently out). D’oh! Mistakes happen, no biggie. But with a sitter on the clock, and time dwindling, we opted instead to catch “Get Out” by Jordan Peele. Until we noticed that the entire theater was sold out — save for two seats not together. And boy, it’d be a hindrance to a date night to not sit together.
So we saw “Lego Batman.” It would be the second time I’d seen it in as many weeks.
I won’t bury the lede: “Lego Batman” is amazing. It’s a visual and auditory roller coaster that nearly never comes up for air.

Chic Young. Al Capp. Jimmy Hatlo. Carl Anderson. Ernie Bushmiller. Alex Raymond. Roy Crane. Those are some names I remember, some 70 years later, with no help from Google, from the “funny side” of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the newspaper that landed, rolled and bound with wire, on the front lawn of the four family flat where we lived until I was 10 or 11. By then I was aware that there was another newspaper, The Star-Times, the one that the O’Neils didn’t read, with its own funnyside and its own names and I may have even known some, but with the exception of Chester Gould, I seem to have forgotten these, maybe because I didn’t see them every day.
Somewhere in early grade school – ah, Sister Helen, what became of you? – I must have realized, probably gradually, that these names had something to do with the comic strips...

"If you're going to make a point of being on this earth for any reason, by all means be an auteur," says celebrated comic artist and writer Ty Templeton -- a statement that would most certainly make Jean-Luc Godard proud, but inevitably make you poor. Very very poor. This is the much bantered about crux of filmmaking. Do you fight to create a vision for your films that is unique to you and perhaps unconventional, or do you succumb to status quo, market trends and your love of food and housing? Above you can watch the Episode 1 bonus feature of Raindance Step & Repeat, a video series for independent filmmakers who want to make a living telling stories. In this episode, Templeton discusses when it's the right and wrong time to be the auteur of your own destiny. Find out more about Templeton here and visit Raindance here. Read More: What...

Celebrated comic artist and writer Ty Templeton explains, "In art school I taught a course called the Cinematography in Comics, and my first lesson to the class was: 'alright everybody, there isn't any cinematography in comics. Now let's move on.'" Wait - aren't comic books basically just storyboards? Isn't that why comics have been adapted into films since the 1940s and comic-book-franchises-cum-blockbusters dominate the box office? DC and Dynamite Comics takes us back in time with a reunion of two dynamic duos that many will say is long overdue. Batman ’66 Meets the Green Hornet sees the two pair of heroes and their sidekicks, Robin and Kato, joining forces to battle evil for a third time. Since all the actors from the television show have either aged far beyond being able to don their respectable costumes or passed on, it’s a dream pairing that could only be made possible in the pages of a comic book.
What could force Batman, the Green Hornet, Robin, and Kato to join forces again? How about the return of General Gumm and his sticky-fingered minions in Gotham City? This time the gooey crime lord has a cohort in villainy. The Joker has joined in on the dastardly depravity!
Filmmaker Kevin Smith works against stereotype by providing a clean and wholesomely...

Add up all the Deadpool series (creatively), and April’s Deadpool #45 marks Wade Wilson’s landmark 250th issue! How is he celebrating? He’s dying! The end of the line comes for all, even one such as Deadpool, but he’s not gone yet! Say your condolences with this new look at the colossal-sized series finale.
First, Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn and Mike Hawthorne serve up a 30-page main story, as the villainous Ultimatum finally makes their move. They’re coming for Deadpool – every last one of them! It’s going to be a bloodbath, but Wade’s going to go down swinging.
Then – Gerry, Brian and Scott Koblish bring you a long lost, full length Deadpool tale. Remember when Wade got a hold of the Infinity Gauntlet? No? Don’t worry – that’s what the story is for. And yes, you should be worried Wade Wilson is in possession of nigh-infinite cosmic power.

Do you long for the more innocent days when Adam West and Burt Ward raced across your television in Technicolor glory battling the charismatic villains of Gotham City? When you think of the Joker, does a Latino actor who refused to shave his mustache come to mind before Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson? Do you constantly find yourself wondering where the "Pow's" and the "Bam's" are as you sit through the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan Dark Knight films? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then Batman '66 Volume 1 is tailor-made for you!
DC Comics releases the first five print issues of Batman '66 for fans of the psychedelic and campy romp we all grew up with. Batman ’66 Vol 1
Written by Jeff Parker
Drawn by Jonathan Case, Ty Templeton, Joe Quinones, Sandy Jarrell, Ruben Procopio and Colleen Coover
Published by DC Comics
Is there another fictional character who has so many clearly identifiable and distinct incarnations as Batman does? There’s the original, Silver Age Batman, Neal Adams’ Batman, Frank Miller, Tim Burton, Bruce Timm, Christopher Nolan and so many other clear and different visual and narrative approaches to the character, each one signifying a distinct vision to the character. It’s all Batman, from the Dark Knight to the urban vigilante to the sleek animated hero. But then there’s the version that embarrassed comic fans for years, the Adam West version from the 1966 Batman television show. Growing up, we called it campy and silly. We called it a humiliation of a comic character that was maybe taken a bit too seriously for a bit too long.

While the Trinity War rages in the New 52 and everyone’s trying to kill one another in Injustice, somewhere in a far off corner of the DC Universe is Batman ’66 dancing the Batusi and smiling. Long before you finish reading Batman ’66 #2 you’ll be smiling too – though, disappointingly, Batman doesn’t dance in this issue.
