In six short years, Big Black pushed underground rock to become edgier, more stomach-churning, and more pyrotechnic. On the handful of EPs and two full-lengths, Atomizer and Songs About Fucking, they released, Steve Albini, who died Tuesday, wrote about everything from child abuse to murderous gangsters and always with a wink as if shining a dark mirror back at buttoned-up middle America. But by 1987, the group — which included guitarist Santiago Durango, bassist Dave Riley, and a drum machine called Roland — decided it had accomplished its mission. So they booked a...

Film and television composer Bear McCreary has unleashed “Incinerator” as the latest single from his recently announced album The Singularity, arriving May 10th. The song features Serj Tankian on vocals, and has a sonic vibe that would fit comfortably in System of a Down’s catalog.
“When I got the music, when I got this song specifically, I was blown away,” stated Tankian. “It’s explosive.”
The song is explosive, indeed, starting out with a blistering guitar riff before Tankian’s soaring trademark vocals take the spotlight. About two minutes into the track, Tankian shifts into a chaotic rapid delivery reminiscent of Soad’s “Chop Suey!”
The tune serves as the album’s leadoff track, with McCreary remarking, “Once I heard Serj’s searing vocals, I knew immediately that ‘Incinerator’ would be the first song on the album, acting like a warning that a massive, aggressive, and emotional journey lay ahead.

Heavy Consequence contributor Greg Prato is also the author of several rock books. His latest, titled Lanegan, pays tribute to late singer Mark Lanegan. Below he introduces exclusive excerpts from Lanegan, as told by the vocalist’s musical peers.
As learned throughout his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep: A Memoir, few lived their life as hard as Mark Lanegan did. After apparently overcoming a near-fatal episode with Covid in 2021 — I interviewed over 20 musicians, friends, and admirers of his music for my latest book, simply titled Lanegan. Below are excerpts from the book, which touch upon various eras of his remarkable career.
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden): We played shows with the Trees, and Mark Pickerel used to joke about how the Trees were compared to the Doors – because on the early Trees records, people would describe Lanegan as having a voice that was reminiscent of Jim Morrison. And in our early days,...

When Lollapalooza revealed this week that Metallica will headline the festival this summer, the announcement reminded some fans of the drama that resulted when the Bay Area bangers first headlined there in 1996. At the time, Lolla was still the premiere showcase for so-called “alternative” bands; top-billed acts in its first five years had included Jane’s Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, and the Smashing Pumpkins.

With Soundgarden, Kim Thayil often experimented with how he played guitar, changing the strings’ tunings and incorporating feedback into the band’s sound. He brings that sense of musical adventuring to “The Firebird,” a track off the upcoming album by the Barrett Martin Group, a jazz-fusion ensemble that the former Screaming Trees drummer leads. The song, featured on the group’s new album Scattered Diamonds, finds Thayil playing along with the brass section’s uplifting melodies before exploring more avant-garde sounds for a quiet improvised solo that blends woozy feedback with the horns.

Five of the band’s records made the cut — everything they released from their debut, Screaming Life, through 1994’s Superunknown — and two of those LPs placed in the top 10. While the show was appropriately heavy on rock artists, it also highlighted two of country and Americana’s most powerful vocalists: Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile.

Editors’ Pick: Chris Cornell, Chris Cornell
This 64-track retrospective of the late grunge icon’s career is a testament to his vocal prowess and thoughtful approach, apparent even on early Soundgarden tracks like the chugging Ultramega Ok opener “Flower” and Louder Than Love’s still-relevant environmentalist plea “Hands All Over.” Tracing his journey from hair-whipping yelper to rock elder, Chris Cornell compiles hits like Temple of the Dog’s glorious “Hunger Strike,” Audioslave’s speaker-shaking debut single “Cochise,” and Cornell’s elegiac cover of “Billie Jean” alongside quieter tracks like...

“There’s a lot of things about Chris [Cornell] that people don’t know,” Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil tells Rolling Stone. “He didn’t bring a lot of baggage. Meaning, he didn’t carry a lot of things or materials or relationships within his life. He was a little bit independent of that. He traveled lightly.”
It’s late October, and Thayil is slumped on a black leather couch in the green room of the Metro club in Chicago, gamely sharing memories of his longtime friend and bandmate. He’s just...

Draco Rosa’s first studio album in five years opens in some confusion, salted with dark humor. The singer is one of the biggest and most notorious stars in modern Latin music. But when he walks into “Hotel de los Encuentros,” he gets the cold shoulder at the registration desk. The voices in charge are barely human — women with the frosty, mechanical sensuality of Alexa, the virtual assistant in your Amazon Echo speaker. They get Rosa’s name wrong and almost send him away before handing over the key to “333” — a room and song that,...

A massive crowd gathered on a misty Sunday to honor the late grunge pioneer Chris Cornell. The Seattle Museum of Pop Culture unveiled a life-size bronze statue of the late Soundgarden singer, which was commissioned by his widow, Vicky Cornell. She was there with their children Lily, Toni and Christopher, as well as Cornell’s former bandmates Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd.
“It’s a reflection of his light, a light that shone through his music and touched millions,” Cornell said during the ceremony. “A light that he used to illuminate our lives,...

Some of the unreleased numbers, including “When Bad Does Good,” will feature on a pared down, single-disc version of the release. Both versions will come out on November 16th.

Pearl Jam paid tribute to Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell Friday night at Seattle’s Safeco Field, with the band’s second Home Shows stadium gig also serving as an all-star celebration of the city’s grunge scene.
During the main set, Pearl Jam debuted their rendition of the obscure Cornell track “Missing,” from the late singer’s rare 1992 five-song Poncier Ep that culled his work from the Singles soundtrack; when Temple of the Dog reunited briefly in 2016, “Missing” became a surprise addition to the setlist.

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and drummer Matt Cameron played together for the first time since the death of Chris Cornell last month at a gig in Denmark. They played together as part of a supergroup called MC50, which pays tribute to the Detroit-based rock group MC5, best known for their leftist politics and the incendiary song “Kick Out the Jams.” At the show, they played “Come Together,” a song off the Kick Out the Jams album.

Chris Cornell was laid to rest Friday at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery, just over one week after his shocking death in Detroit.
The Soundgarden frontman was found dead of suicide by hanging at MGM Grand Detroit following the band’s performance at the Michigan city’s Fox Theatre May 18.
Over the weekend, Cornell’s body was flown to California, where it was cremated Tuesday, the family’s attorney Kirk Pasich previously told People in a statement. Friday’s funeral service was private, but was followed by a public memorial later in the day.

Detroit photographer Ken Settle has been shooting concerts and artists in the Detroit area since the 70s. He first captured images of the grunge-era band Soundgarden in their early years in the late 80s. Every time they came to town since, he’s been on hand to take new photos and watch a show.
But Wednesday night’s performance at Detroit’s Fox Theatre — the last for frontman Chris Cornell, who committed suicide early Thursday — was different in several ways, Settle tells People.
“My first impression was that Chris was more joyous than I’d ever seen him before,” Settle said.

The brute power of Chris Cornell‘s four-octave voice belayed an inner strength that battled drugs and depression since his earliest days. The voice that brought the music of Soundgarden and Audioslave to millions was silenced on May 17th, when Cornell was found dead in a Detroit hotel room following a concert.

Wasn't easy to whittle this list down to 10, let alone 11, so I picked 12 for 12-12-12. A few of these selections were last minute additions that knocked two other picks out of top spots. Moreover, I decided to include twelve more picks at the end of my selections to show what else was being considered.
Nada Surf The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk)
I've not seen this album on any critics' year-end lists (aside from my managing editor Steve's list, obviously). Not sure why, because Nada Surf released a timeless collection of alt pop-rock songs. This is songwriting 101 -- verse, chorus, verse, bridge. If there is a better pop-rock band in America, let me know. Twenty years in and no sign of lazy rock star bullshit, just plenty of great chiming guitar riffs and hooky-as-hell tunes. Album of the year.

Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.
"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James You're So Great E.P. (Cobraside)
If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band Transvision Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk rawk palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy Pop Stooge) and drummer James Sclavunos (Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together.

The teasers that Soundgarden have posted on Youtube within the past couple of days have got people asking a lot of questions. Mainly because there’s very little material in them to tease with. A few vocal lines, mixtures of distorted, jangling guitars and a brief instrumental later, many have been left none the wiser from the short clips. Apart from that Chris Cornell has grown his hair back, and someone killed a lot of animals for the new album cover. But have no fear, because there are a few clues lying around, if you know where to look.
First off, expect a much more poppy affair this time round. If the fairly upbeat and catchy Avengers tie-in single ‘Live to rise’ left too much to the imagination, then it only takes a glance at Cornell’s solo album ‘Scream’ to reveal what could lie in store. Whilst hopefully the...
