Eminent Afghanistan filmmaker Roya Sadat had quite the journey while filming “The Sharp Edge of Peace,” which has its world premiere at Hot Docs.
The film follows four women leaders, Fatima Gailani, Fawzia Koofi, Habiba Sarabi and Sharifa Zumati, who risk their lives and receive death threats, as they find a way to sit at the negotiating table with the Taliban to ensure justice for women.
Sadat, whose “A Letter to the President” was Afghanistan’s contender in Oscar’s international category in 2017, was a teenage schoolgirl when the Taliban returned to power for the first time this century, a period she describes as a “terrifying nightmare of five dark and hopeless years.”
“The women of Afghanistan have an unwritten history of struggle. There’s no mention of their names in the pages of political history; this lost history has been standing up for its rights for years. And this time,...

Actor Ivan Dixon was a favorite of Rod Serling's, who cast him in The Twilight Zone twice. Dixon was black, and Serling fought to get minorities on TV in roles that weren't defined only by race. Dixon went on to become a prolific TV director himself, and made two features. Trouble Man (1972) is a not-particularly-ambitious blacksploitation pic that does everything it sets out to do with efficiency. The following year's The Spook Who Sat by the Door aims much, much higher, telling an epic, politically-charged story spanning years and leaping from Langley to Chicago. "Spook": racist epithet for an African American. Slang term for a spy. The set-up: a beleaguered politician decides to divert criticism by accusing the CIA of racism: they have no Black agents. So a recruitment drive is started, but many within the organization don't intend to allow any of the applicants to succeed. Most...

David Bowie played a lot of roles on stage, screen and studio, but he always stood out. We look back at his film career.
On Monday, January 11, 2016, the world woke up to the news that David Bowie had died on the 10th. His final album, Blackstar, turned out to be a personal farewell made during the final stages of terminal cancer that barely slowed the musician. The Thin White Duke’s final album was released on his 69th birthday, Jan. 8. This writer, among many, believed it told of a new beginning. In some ways it did. One of the music videos that accompanied the album showed Bowie frantically writing as if he had so much more to say.
Bowie, who was born in the rough Brixton section of south London, was one of the greats, up there with The Beatles, Elvis Presley – whose birthday he shared, Tchaikovsky,...

Guest review by Darwyn Carson Right off, I admit there's a soft spot in my heart for British-produced mysteries and dramas. The Last Detective is right at the top of my fav's list. This lighthearted BBC TV-fare, based on the Dangerous Davies novels by Leslie Thomas, escaped my attention until last year after Acorn released season four on DVD. I watched it all one weekend and wanted more. Lucky me: Acorn is distributing the entire series in one package (17 episodes) and I get to see how Detective Constable Davies came to be nicknamed Dangerous—he is not—from the very beginning. Peter Davison stars as Davies, a forty-something man on the fast-track to nowhere in the township of...

A few weeks ago, I attended a taping of BBC Radio 4’s program Open Book. The topic was a debate to choose Britain’s funniest book, and the five books under discussion were: • 1066 And All That, by W.C. Sellar and R.J. Yeatman (championed by John Sessions) • The Virgin Soldiers, by Leslie Thomas (championed by Tony Parsons) • The Loved One, by Evelyn Waugh (championed by A.L. Kennedy) • The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged thirteen and three quarters, by Sue Townsend (championed by Jo Brand) • Swing Hammer Swing, by Jeff Torrington (championed by Christopher Brookmyre) The winner was chosen by the studio audience -- we voted through several elimination rounds -- which made for an interesting experience for me, since I haven’t read any of the books. (Though now I plan to read all of them.) I cast my votes based entirely upon the presentations by the writers, comedians,...
