- Volunteered in Kenya during a year off from college on a science research project studying black rhino thermoregulation. Later that same year, conducted vegetation surveys of Meru National Park, the same park where the "Born Free" story of Elsa the lioness took place.
- Received support from the US Dept of Fish and Wildlife to hatch sandhill crane eggs in order to imprint chicks for filming in Wings Over Water, because of the conservation value of the film's story.
