“I’m beginning to wonder if you’re not destined for very great things, Nelly Jackson. I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve been sent to the planet for something special.” So Nell (Louisa Harland) is told midway through Disney+’s Renegade Nell, but by that point the prediction feels like a wild understatement. After all, it’s coming from Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), the mysterious sprite who occasionally grants her otherworldly gifts of strength, speed and invulnerability. Surely the narrative gods never intended her to apply such strange talents to a humdrum life.
What that specific “something special” might be, however, proves more difficult to pin down. Nell accomplishes plenty over the adventure’s first season, such that this common nobody even gets tangled up in the struggle between Queen Anne (Jodhi May) and the Jacobite traitors who would overthrow her. But Renegade Nell never does deliver on...

Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. You can hardly blame her, given the reduced offer the cash-strapped British broadcaster is now extending even to its more illustrious dramaturges: rarely more than three episodes per series and four characters per scene. Imposed by post-Brexit belt-tightening, this sorry set of limitations has exasperated those obliged to work within them while dispiriting viewers, left watching the life — and the talent — drain from primetime broadcasts.
Mashing up historical and fantastical elements, the pricey-looking, eight-part “Renegade Nell” rides into a surprisingly crowded field for light period entertainments straddling the Stuart and Georgian eras, emerging after the sadly short-lived BBC comedy “The Witchfinder” and Apple TV+’s recent “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.” While...

"She fights as though she's possessed." Disney+ has revealed an official trailer for an entertaining adventure comedy series called Renegade Nell, created by English TV creator Sally Wainwright, inspired by a true story. Of course. This cracking new series will be streaming on Disney+ worldwide starting at the end of March for everyone to enjoy. A quick-witted and courageous young woman framed for murder unexpectedly becomes the most notorious "highwayman" outlaw in 18th-century England. When a magical spirit called Billy appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. So – a bit of a superhero story, too? Renegade Nell (formerly The Ballad of Renegade Nell) is a British historical adventure series produced by The Lookout Point. Starring Louisa Harland as Nell Jackson, Joely Richardson, Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, Craig Parkinson, Florence Keen, Frank Dillane, Alice Kremelberg, Jake Dunn, and Pip Torrens as Lord Blancheford. This actually looks pretty cool!

Kila Lord Cassidy (“The Wonder”), Richard McCabe (“Napoleon”), Vicki Pepperdine (“Poor Things”) and Pip Torrens (“The Iron Lady”) round out the cast. The film recently wrapped in the U.K.
“Set against the backdrop of eighteenth century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – this is a timely and darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Grant) and Lady Savage (Foy) and their blind pursuit of a better life,” reads the logline. “It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Succession Season 4, Episode 9, “Church and State.”] Succession laid Logan Roy (Brian Cox) to rest in the penultimate episode of the show’s fourth and final season, and with his funeral celebration came the resurfacing of his ex-wife, Caroline (Harriet Walter). Showing up to support her children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), as well as give her phony husband Peter (Pip Torrens) an opportunity to shmooze senators, Caroline makes a splash at the highly-attended event. Coming face-to-face with her children, she’s immediately shocked to discern that Shiv is expecting a baby, as the women size each other up, you can’t help but wonder what they’re truly thinking. Thankfully, Walter spoke to TV Insider to help break down the context of these tense interactions among other episode highlights, like filming the funeral sequence with Brian Cox on set, whether Caroline really thinks she should...

The Roy dynasty has reached the end of the line.
HBO’s Succession returns Sunday, March 26, with its first new episode since 2021. It’s also the Emmy-winning drama’s final first new episode, period. Creator Jesse Armstrong revealed in February that Succession will end with season four, closing out the saga of media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox), his adult children and all the other assorted hangers-on, like Nicholas Braun’s Cousin Greg. With only 10 episodes remaining, the final fates for Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are almost at hand — and given how season three wrapped up, those fates have never felt more imbalanced.
Ahead of the final season premiere, The Hollywood Reporter rounds up everything you need to remember about Succession, from shifting alliances to serious bombs that could explode in the episodes ahead. Action stations, everyone!

HBO’s official trailer for Succession season four is full of plotting, backstabbing, and shifting loyalties. In other words, everything we’ve come to expect – and love – about the award-winning drama.
The trailer kicks off with Logan Roy insisting he’s accomplished so much that no one should question how he’s doing. That’s followed by Greg spying on Logan as he circles the trading floor, describing Logan’s actions to Tom on the phone as terrifyingly moseying. “It’s like if Santa Claus was a hitman,” says Greg.
The trailer also includes Kendall suggesting to his siblings that they need to fight Logan by partnering up with Sandi, Stewy, and Pierce – “death wrestling ogres.”
The final season stars Brian Cox as Logan Roy, Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, Sarah Snook as Siobhan Roy, Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy, and Alan Ruck as Connor Roy. Matthew Macfadyen plays Tom Wambsgans,...

Succession is heading to an end.
The hit HBO drama series will come to a conclusion with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorker.
The series will return for season four on Sunday March 26. The season picks up when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said, “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys is not opposed to a possible ‘Succession’ spinoff, but argues that it “doesn’t seem like a natural thing.”

HBO and HBO Max are becoming very unpredictable.
Ever since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, there have been plenty of controversial decisions from the higher-ups at the company.
If you thought Minx was the only cancellation this week, then we have bad news.
HBO Max has split up with Love Life, canceling the romantic anthology after two seasons.
The writing had been on the wall with the lack of updates following the Season 2 finale back in November 2021.
The first season was headlined by Anna Kendrick, while the second had William Jackson Harper at the forefront.
The series has also been pulled from HBO Max, meaning there's a chance fans will never get to rewatch the series again.
Sam Boyd, the creator and co-showrunner, reflected on the cancellation on Twitter.

Spoiler alert: Do not read if you have not seen the Season 3 finale of HBO’s “Succession,” “All the Bells Say.”
After a rollicking Season 3 finale, one thing’s for sure: “Succession” built a lot of shareholder value in its third season.
The HBO drama wrapped up its nine-episode run with a 65-minute closer, “All the Bells Say.” The episode saw the power dynamics among patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his battered-and-bruised adult children go up and down as much as much as the stock market in recent months.
The episode — written by series creator/showrunner Jesse Armstrong and directed by Mark Mylod — showcased “Succession’s” signature brand of boardroom thriller, with deeply emotional scenes among estranged family members cut with dealmaking and double-cross machinations as the Roy clan’s Waystar Royco conglomerate pursued a risky transaction with tech giant GoJo.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the Season 3 finale of HBO’s Succession.
While Succession‘s Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) seemed like he might have met his end in the penultimate episode of Season 3, it turns out in finale “All the Bells Say” that he survived his near pool drowning. And while he has so often been at odds with siblings Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) over the years, this episode sees him land squarely on their side.
The Season 3 finale hinges on Roy patriarch Logan’s (Brian Cox) negotiations with Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård) with regard to a merger between his Waystar Royco and the tech entrepreneur’s GoJo, with Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) informing the Roy siblings of major fines to be imposed on Waystar by the DOJ, and the company’s compromised position as it looks to lock in a deal. The Nevers has gotten off to a great start for HBO. Sunday night’s premiere of the Victorian science fiction drama series drew just over 1.4 million viewers across linear telecasts and digital, including the best start for a new HBO Original on HBO Max, according to the premium cabler. The debut episode surpassed viewership for premieres of recent HBO dramas including Lovecraft Country and The Undoing, and viewership is expected to grow via additional telecasts and viewing across platforms, HBO said.

“The Nevers,” Joss Whedon’s steampunk brainchild and HBO’s latest original series, drew over 1.4 million viewers across linear telecasts and digital during its premiere on Sunday night. The show scored the best debut for a new original series on HBO Max and surpassed viewership for other popular shows on the streamer, including Misha Green’s horror drama “Lovecraft Country” and David E. Kelley’s psychological thriller “The Undoing.” This preliminary number will likely increase significantly as viewing across HBO’s platforms and additional telecasts are factored in.
Per the logline, the fantastical, sci-fi period drama set in Victorian London takes place after the supernatural events of August 1896, in which certain people — mostly women — are granted extraordinarily abnormal abilities, from the wondrous to the disturbing. This The Nevers review contains spoilers.
The Nevers Episode 1
Who is The Nevers for? Not kids, clearly. The frolicsome humour, cartoony performances and grade school social commentary might suggest so, but the nudity, cursing and blood say no. It’s meant for adults then, those of us happy to go along with the essential YA-ness of its ‘Victorian orphanage for superpowered misfits’ premise.
Episode one opens with a flashback montage introducing the ensemble of – mostly but not all – women in 1890s London. One repairs a broken pump with a clothespin, another queues for an opera audition, another is led away to an asylum, while another drops willingly into the Thames. By the end of the hour we learn that this was the moment that three years earlier, a mysterious and possibly alien airship passed over London trailing glittering motes that entered some and left them with a unique special ability.

On Aug. 3, 1896, a mysterious event takes place in London, turning a seemingly random group of people from ordinary citizens into a superpowered subgroup that becomes known as “the touched.”
What the touched do with their newfound abilities, and how society reacts to them, is the basis for HBO’s The Nevers, which premiered Sunday on HBO. In a moment, we’ll want to know what you thought of the fantasy drama, which was created by Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon. But first, a quick recap of the first episode.

When The Nevers‘ first footage dropped earlier this year, I distinctly remember thinking, “Ooh, it’s steampunk Buffy with corsets!” Now that the drama, created by Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon, has released its first four episodes to the press, I can confirm: It is, indeed, steampunk Buffy with corsets — and for several reasons, that’s no longer an enticing concept.
For sure, The Nevers is of a piece with Whedon’s kickass-girl-power oeuvre, which includes Buffy and Dollhouse, as well as elements in Angel, Firefly and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The period drama, which premieres Sunday (HBO, 9/8c...

The Nevers should be a triumphant TV homecoming for Joss Whedon. It’s the first series in more than a decade solely created by the man responsible for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly. (He co-created Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in 2013 with brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, and wasn’t really involved past the pilot episode.) It is his first dance with premium cable, after spending the earlier phase of his career working for broadcast networks with either low budgets or minimal faith in his ideas.

Members of the Touched are disconcerting people in Victorian-era London with their supernatural abilities in the new trailer for HBO Max’s The Nevers. The series premieres on April 11th.
The new trailer reveals that an underclass, known as the Touched who are primarily made up of women, had awoken from an unexplained event three years ago with supernatural powers. “They have weird deformities and afflictions,” one person remarks of what they understand of the Touched. Some are out to capitalize on the abilities of the Touched, viewing them as...
