Joe vs. Carole debuts on Peacock on Thursday, March 3, and while its titular characters are impossible not to know at this point, the actor playing Joe Exotic, series star John Cameron Mitchell, may be an unfamiliar face to some. But Mitchell is an icon of stage and screen in his own right. Ahead of his performance as the Tiger King star opposite Kate McKinnon‘s Carole Baskin, here’s everything you need to know about Mitchell. Before Mitchell was a TV star, he rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Mitchell created and starred in the Off-Broadway rock musical, which he developed with creative partner Stephen Trask. Like Little Shop of Horrors, the original 1998 production had a solely Off-Broadway run. It shot up in popularity, leading to the 2001 film adaptation directed by and starring Mitchell. It was Mitchell’s feature film directorial debut, as well as his first major screen acting credit,...

John Cameron Mitchell has teamed up with Alynda Segarra (Hurray for the Riff Raff) for a new single, “American Sickness.”
The two singer-songwriters co-wrote the song, which touches on the state of the country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and they perform it in a surreal music video that Mitchell directed with animator Nathan Stassin.
“I can’t believe I got to co-write with Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the Riff Raff, who is my Springsteen, Chrissie Hynde, and Patti Smith all rolled into one,” Mitchell said in a statement.

“Riverdale” is nothing if not a wicked little town so quite fittingly, in Season 4, the cast tackled “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” for its musical episode. And once again, Kevin Keller, played by Casey Cott, took center stage, this time in full Hedwig drag, a process Cott called “incredible.”
“It was very humbling to do drag for the first time, and drag is a pop culture sensation right now with so many incredible performers. Obviously, RuPaul is unbelievable,” Cott told Variety on the “Variety After-Show,” although he added that he couldn’t “tie the shoes” of any of the competitors seen on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
The CW series’ third musical episode (they have tackled “Carrie” and “Heathers” in the past) certainly did not disappoint. When Kevin tries to do a “Hedwig” number for the school variety show, Principal Honey (Kerr Smith) threatens to cancel the event, declaring it inappropriate.

Created by veteran writer/artist Dan Parent in 2010, Kevin Keller was the first Lgbtq+ character in Archie Comics history. Kevin was an immediate sensation, and a further reminder of how welcoming of a place that Riverdale is. When the CW gave the comics a brooding makeover with Riverdale seven years later, Kevin made the jump to television as a core part of the series’ supporting cast . In the show, Kev has dealt with everything from getting involved with an organ-harvesting cult to having a one-time boyfriend die as a part of a murderous real-life role-playing game.

Curtain call! Riverdale's next musical episode has been revealed, and this time, they're taking on Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Following semidisastrous productions of Carrie and Heathers the past two seasons - someone actually died during the Carrie production - Kevin sets out to revive Riverdale High's variety show in the upcoming episode. However, when Mr. Honey forbids them from performing the musical, the students rally together and sing their hearts out. According to the episode's description, there will also be a "forbidden showmance" that begins to blossom.
The musical, which made its off-Broadway premiere in 1998, tells the story of a genderqueer East German who is the lead singer of a rock band. In 2001, Hedwig and the Angry Inch was turned into a film starring the musical's writer John Cameron Mitchell, and in 2014, it made its Broadway debut with Neil Patrick Harris as the lead.

This year's musical episode of Riverdale is shaping up to be the best one yet, with Hedwig and the Angry Inch!
That scream you just heard that shook the heavens? That was my response to learning that Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be the focus of this year's musical episode of Riverdale.
Originally performed Off-Broadway in 1998, the show, created by Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell (who stars in the titular role), chronicles the hilarious and poignant experiences of Hedwig Schmidt -- a genderqueer performer whose band is on a tour of dive venues that piggybacks the itinerary of Hedwig's rock star ex.
It's about a whole lot more than that though, and part of the fun of Hedwig and the Angry Inch is how it peels back the layers of Hedwig's story literally and figuratively. What results is a captivating look at love and identity,...

Hedwig meets Jughead? Even with today’s anything-goes, mash-up approach to pop culture, nobody saw this one coming. Born a boy in East Berlin, Hansel Schmidt (writer-director John Cameron Mitchell) was raised by a German mother and an American father. Thus began his obsession with rock music – particularly the gender-malleable antics of artists like David Bowie, for whom of course Berlin was no stranger. Despite his mother’s attempts to restrict Hansel’s musical performance urges (she insists he practice singing with his head in the oven) and lead an ordinary life, he ends up falling for a black, male American GI and he decides to become a woman named Hedwig. The “Angry Inch” is the result of Hedwig’s botched operation, and before she knows it she’s divorced in a trailer park in Kansas.

I’ve never seen someone work an apple crate quite like John Cameron Mitchell. It’s early 2015, and two weeks into his celebrated return to the iconic role and show he created with composer Stephen Trask, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Mitchell has sustained a knee injury that severely limited his movement — especially in 4-inch fuck-me pumps. But, just like when I saw Patti LuPone do Rose’s Turn in Isotoners, Mitchell soldiered on, knee brace and all. Resting his leg on an apple crate, he invented a story that Hedwig had been attacked (perks of being the writer), and the whole injury seemed to make him even looser with the clever one-liners than usual.

Here are lyrics from a song in the new musical “This Ain’t No Disco” that creatives Stephen Trask (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and Peter Yanowitz hope will make us yearn for the golden age of disco, circa 1979-80, when everyone was flocking to after-hours clubs like Studio 54. Give a listen: “Rollerboy angels are skating / Glistening pectorals smooth / The beat and the pulse are creating / An anthem your soul for to soothe.”
Doesn’t it just make you want to jump over that velvet rope and claw your way inside, where all the beautiful people are getting drunk and stoned and having fun? No? Well, consider yourself saved, because the rest of this new musical is just as dumb as that dopey lyric.
In its heyday, the nightclub that Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell (played here by a crazed-looking Theo Stockman) built into the honeypot known as Studio 54 was,...

2001 was the comeback year for the musical. As the massively-scaled Moulin Rouge was reinventing the genre for the post MTV era, John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch was an unassuming small scale success that didn't disappoint its cult following from its Off Broadway run and the cult grew rapidly after its Sundance debut. Still a genre anomaly for Sundance, this musical was awarded the Audience Award (Dramatic) and Mitchell won Best Director for his first time behind the camera.
The dramatic Audience Award winners are typically optimistic, but rarely this uniting - Hedwig is a musical that reflects our deepest human needs. Nothing brings together a crowd of strangers like music (or film) we can all connect to and Hedwig's score is packed with emotional insight. Composer Stephen Trask fills the songs with rage, wit, and a hard-won optimism that burns through whatever baggage we as an audience bring to the table.

Martin Scorsese's scabrous showbiz satire "The King of Comedy" is one of the director's oft-unsung masterworks, even if it took a box office hit in 1982. Now, it is getting the Broadway musical treatment. Composer and lyricist Stephen Trask (“Hedwig & The Angry Inch”) and Chris D’Arienzo, book writer of the Tony-nominated jukebox musical “Rock of Ages" (which later became the 2012 film flop) will pen this stage version of the cult classic about a desperate comedian who stalks and kidnaps his idol, a late-night TV host. New Regency, whose founder Arnon Milchan produced the original movie starring Robert De Niro, will back the project.
