Destin Cretton (I Am Not A Hipster), who as well as this version also wrote and directed the short film on which Short Term 12 is based, is certainly a director to watch after his work on this movie, released in November of 2013 in cinemas and on Blu-ray and DVD just a week or so ago.
Set in a facility that cares for and houses foster kids that are in-between homes and for whatever reason are no longer with their birth families, the story of Short Term 12 follows a twenty-something manager of the facility named Grace, played with subtlety, heart and a wonderful sense of realism by Brie Larson (The Spectacular Now). Grace is juggling her work at the facility, her secret relationship with co-worker Mason,...

Director: Destin Cretton; Screenwriter: Destin Cretton; Starring: Brie Larson, Frantz Turner, John Gallagher Jr, Kaitlyn Dever; Running time: 97 mins; Certificate: 15
A small film with a big heart, Short Term 12 delves into the lives of kids and their twentysomething carers at a short-term foster home. There are no star names here but there are star turns, most notably from Brie Larson as one of the staffers, Grace.
Grace is a bit of a kid herself who uses a water gun to get the kids out of bed in the morning. At the same time she also has a great sense of responsibility, but that burden weighs heavier when she finds out she is pregnant and it may be too much for her to bear. She keeps it a secret, even from her boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr) who works alongside her at the home.
The reasons for this become apparent very gradually,...

Short Term 12 helmer Destin Cretton could have landed a dream job on the directors chair after his critically-acclaimed work on the drama starring Brie Larson, Frantz Turner and John Gallagher Jr. According to Variety, Cretton, who also wrote Short Term 12, is in early negotiations to direct Jennifer Lawrence in Lionsgate’s The Glass Castle, where he would also do a rewrite of the script alongside Andrew Lanham, from Fright Night scribe Marti Noxon, adapted from the 2005 bestselling memoir by Jeanette Walls.

Chicago – There are certain jobs that I know that I could not do not because of the physical requirements but the emotional baggage I would take home with me at the end of the day. The brilliant, moving “Short Term 12” captures one of these jobs – people who look out for abandoned kids, many of them abused, addicted, and troubled the point of pure heartbreak.
Especially now that I’m a father, seeing kids abused shatters me to the point where I can’t even watch a movie about it without getting emotional. I’d be a wreck on the job every day.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
And yet some people take on this challenge and Destin Cretton has used his experience doing so to craft his debut film. “Short Term 12” is difficult to describe without it sounding manipulative or melodramatic but I’ll do my best. Trust me when I tell...

Short Term 12 is intended to be a limbo -- of sorts -- for foster kids, a temporary residence for at-risk kids who unfortunately know nothing other than temporary residences. As you can pretty much guess, the kids of Short Term 12 are emotionally troubled; but their psychological hardships are as diversely represented by writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton as their ethnicities. Some of their emotional scars run so deep that they are expressed with physical lacerations; others while away their time in self-imposed seclusion or repeatedly attempt to run away from it all. Make no mistake, though, they are not "underprivileged," whatever the heck that means. There is an infinite amount of hope and promise within each and every one of these kids, they just need someone to help them see the bright side of life. Grace (Brie Larson), Mason (John Gallagher Jr.), Jessica (Stephanie Beatriz) and newcomer Nate (Rami Malek...

Fans of zombie fiction have an endless library of books to chose from that explore the zombie apocalypse scenario from the survivor perspective, but did you ever wonder what it’s like from the zombie’s point of view? Do they think? Dream? Love? Even die? Joan Frances Turner cites her first viewing of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) as the impetus for creating her debut novel Dust (released by Ace Books in September 2010), but instead of beating an undead horse she explores the mythos from a typically silent character, save for the moans and groans; the zombie. I would have missed Dust if it wasn’t for the eye-catching cover. The single wilted leaf, glossy remnants of green accented with yellow and red, against a stark matte gray cover initially grabbed my attention. I was further tempted by the rare setting in my own home state of Indiana,...

Book Expo America, or Bea, is the largest trade book fair in North America, which means that pretty much every single publisher in the U.S. (plus many from overseas) converge on the universally loathed Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City for one brief, packed week of buzz about books. Last week, I joined the thousands of footsore book enthusiasts making the long walk from 8th Avenue to the Javitz Center, in search of this fall's big trends in fantasy literature. Here's what I discovered: 1. Zombies: They Just Keep Coming Back Zombies may be much less alluring than vampires (all that rotting flesh is kind of a turn-off), but this fall, they're poised to take over the world. In September, Ace Books' leads off with Dust by Joan Frances Turner, written from the first person perspective of a girl who died nine years ago in a car crash...
