“I didn’t expect it, so that just makes it that more special,” Salvador Perez reveals about his 2023 Emmy nomination for “Hocus Pocus 2” in the category of Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. The Disney+ telefilm is also nominated for Best TV Movie and Best Music Composition. The costume designer, who was previously recognized for “The Mindy Project” in 2015, continues on, “To be recognized was just cake with icing, and then cake on top of icing.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Perez calls himself “a huge fan” of the original Disney film, which introduced the campy Sanderson witches — Bette Midler as Winnie, Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah and Kathy Najimy as Mary — to audiences in 1993. “I’ve probably seen it 30 or 40 times,” he tells us. “I also had the benefit of being friends with Mary E. Vogt, who designed the original movie, and was able to ask her about details and where things came from.

If the Joker is the most fun Batman villain to play, The Penguin has to be a close second. If you look at actors who've portrayed the legendary rogue, the character seems to bring out some genuinely novel and committed performances. Colin Farrell had unbridled fun playing the Penguin in "The Batman," telling Total Film, "It overtook me [...] I started moving and talking and gesticulating with my hands and it felt like being a kid in the sandbox, man."
Before Farrell and makeup geniuses Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine put their stamp on the Penguin, Stan Winston and Danny DeVito had a go at it for Tim Burton's 1992 effort "Batman Returns." And in much the same way Farrell was able to disappear beneath his prosthetics, DeVito was a little too committed to the role of the Penguin. In a making-of featurette, Winston, who'd designed DeVito's prosthetics, recalled seeing the actor on set,...

At the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGAs) on Feb. 27 at L.A.’s Fairmont Century Plaza, special honorees will include costume designers Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Rachael M. Stanley (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Ally McBeal); Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, who will receive the Spotlight Award; and Bette Midler, who will be recognized with the Distinguished Collaborator Award.
Midler jokes with THR that the Costume Designers Guild award recognizes her “willingness to stand in front of a mirror for hours on end! What could be more delightful?” All kidding aside, Midler continues, “A great costume is like a second skin; you feel as if you belong in it. It’s very freeing because it provides so much information to the audience, and you don’t have to work so hard.”

Hocus Pocus 2 costume designer Salvador Perez helped give the Sanderson sisters a modern update. And while the iconic witches (played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) are just as bewitching as you may remember them from the 1993 Halloween cult classic, the sequel finds the sisters with new costume details that add more to the lore of Hocus Pocus.
“This all started with Mary Vogt, the original costume designer, who is a friend of mine,” Perez tells The Hollywood Reporter about the costumes’ origins from the original film. “And when I got this, I immediately called her and I’m like, ‘So, why aren’t you doing this?’ And she’s like, ‘Look, I did the first one. It’s been 30 years since the first “Hocus Pocus,” which ended with the Sanderson sisters Winnie (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) disintegrating. The Sanderson sisters are back in “Hocus Pocus 2,” now streaming on Disney+.
After a brief backstory intro, Salem teen Becca (Whitney Peak) is fooled into lighting the black flame candle by Gilbert (Sam Richardson), the owner of the magic shop, formerly the Sanderson sisters’ home. And thus, the sisters are resurrected.
Costume designer Sal Perez resurrected the trio’s outfits and then went even farther to breathe new life into the beloved property.
At the end of the first film, the sisters’ clothes also disintegrated along with their bodies. Perez says, “With that mindset, I thought, ‘What would they come back in?’”
The sequel’s director, Anne Fletcher, guided Perez. “She said, ‘I want everything to have a meaning, don’t just arbitrarily put something on it,...

When director Gina Prince-Bythewood took the helm of Netflix’s “The Old Guard,” bowing on the streaming service July 10, one of the first people she called was longtime collaborator and editor Terilyn Shropshire — the two have a partnership that dates back 20 years, along the way collaborating on “Love & Basketball,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Beyond the Lights” and “Shots Fired.”
Prince-Bythewood knew what production company Skydance wanted when it entrusted her with the film, starring Charlize Theron as the leader of a secret band of immortal mercenaries who have been protecting the world — and their own identities — for centuries, and must now be even more vigilant as they bring on a new member (played by KiKi Layne of “If Beale Street Could Talk”).

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed nominees for its 22nd CDGAs, which celebrate excellence in film, TV, and short form costume design. Winners will be announced at a ceremony January 28 at the Beverly Hilton to be hosted by Mindy Kaling.
The guild previously announced that this year’s Cdga honorees include Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan, (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).
This year marks the first under new rules on the TV side in which designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.
Last year, Black Panther‘s Ruth E. Carter, Crazy Rich Asians’ Mary E. Vogt and Sandy Powell for The Favourite were among the film winners. Carter went on to take the honor at the Oscars.

The romantic-comedy director’s main job is to create a story so charming that it convinces viewers to suspend reality, to make them cast away logic, be dazzled and let themselves fall in love with love.
“Notting Hill” had to make us believe a world-famous actress would just randomly show up in a cozy London neighborhood and fall in love with the owner of a travel bookstore. Definitely unrealistic and yet we allow ourselves to fall in love with it. And in “Long Shot,” director Jonathan Levine (“Snatched”) must convince us that Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen), a left-leaning and unemployed journalist who lives in tapered pants, a baseball cap and windbreaker, could capture the heart of a smart, powerful, successful woman like U.S. Secretary of State Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron).

While “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost at the Costume Designer Awards on Tuesday, it still ended up winning the most precursor prizes of the eight Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. This biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury won with four of the nine guilds at which it contended. It lost with the art directors, costume designers, makeup artists/hairstylists, producers and visual effects wizards.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” — did win over the costume designers. These victories in the fantasy and period film races respectively brought their overall hauls to three apiece. “Black Panther” had previously prevailed with the actors and art directors while “The Favourite” scored with the art directors and film editors. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

With the Writers Guild and Motion Picture Sound Editors awards on Sunday (February 17), we’ve now heard from 12 of the 13 guilds. The costume designers don’t weigh in till hours after Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, February 19.
The winners with the writers were “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (adapted”) and “Eighth Grade” (original) while “A Quiet Place” took the top sound editing award. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay, “The Favourite,” was ineligible at the WGA Awards. Over on the sound side, two other Best Picture nominees, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Roma,” picked up two and one prizes respectively.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” had also won on Saturday with the sound mixers at the Cinema Audio Society Awards. That one-two punch moves this biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury into first on our guild awards scorecard with four wins following its success with the actors and film editors.

It took till the last weekend of guild awards season but “A Star is Born” finally picked up a prize at the Makeup and Hair Styling Awards on Saturday, February 16. This win for best contemporary makeup was particularly welcome as Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic lost at the other guild awards of the evening. The Cinema Audio Society went with “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best Sound Mixing.
This marked the third victory to date for the biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury following its success with the actors and film editors. “Crazy Rich Asians” picked up its third prize as well, with a win for contemporary hairstyling. It had previously won over both the art and casting directors. Each is now tied with “Green Book,” which has wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.
Two more guilds — the sound editors and writers — will chime in on Sunday.

We’ re now more than two-thirds along the road to the Oscars with 9 of the 13 guilds having weighed in with their picks before academy voters begin casting their final ballots on Feb. 12. “Green Book” has won with the three of the eight groups heard from to date: actors, casting directors and producers.
After their success with the art directors, “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” are now tied with “Bohemian Rhapsody” at two wins apiece as detailed below. And “Roma” got on the scoreboard with that DGA win for multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron, who lost the cinematography award on Feb. 9 to “Cold War” lenser Lukasz Zal.
Three more groups — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound editors and writers — announce their winners during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards. And the costume designers hold their awards mere hours after Academy Awards balloting ends on Feb. 20.

We are now more than halfway along the road to the Oscars as the seventh of 13 guilds — the Visual Effects Society — handed out its precursor prizes on Feb. 5. Only one of the Best Picture nominees was in the running: “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost its bid for best supporting visual effects to “First Man.” That marked the first guild win for Damien Chazelle‘s biopic of Neil Armstrong.
The big winner with the Ves was “Avengers: Infinity War” which swept its four categories, including the guild equivalent of Best Picture – visual effects in a feature motion picture. Among its other wins was effects simulations. While it had contended for its depiction of Wakanda, the home of Black Panther, it won instead for bringing Titan to the screen. That wasn’t surprising given that the Ves had snubbed “Black Panther” across the board.

With the Ace Eddie Awards on Feb. 1, we’ve now heard from 4 of the 13 guilds who give out prizes. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which had already racked up a win with SAG for lead Rami Malek, won with the cutters on the drama side. That moves it into second place on our guild awards scorecard behind “Green Book” which has won over the actors, casting directors and producers to date. And “The Favourite” got on the board with its comedy/musical win at the Ace Eddies.
On Feb. 2, we’ll hear from the directors (“Roma” helmer Alfonso Cuaron is tipped to take that prize) and the art directors who hand out awards in three genres. Before nominations for the Oscars were announced on Jan. 22, we’d already heard from the producers and actors with their picks for the best of the year. On Thursday Jan. 31, the casting directors chimed in with their choices. This weekend, three more groups (art directors, directors, film editors) will hand out prizes. And two more — the lensers and visual effects wizards — hold their awards before final Oscar voting begins on Feb. 12.
Four more groups — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound mixers, sound editors and writers — weigh in during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards. And the costume designers have their say hours after Oscar balloting ends on Feb. 20.

We just heard from the Motion Picture Sound Editors society with their nominees for the best of the year. These maestros of sound were the last of the 13 guilds and societies to weigh in with their choices following the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers.
“A Star is Born” reaped two bids from the Mpse and ends this phase of awards season with nominations from 12 of the 13 precursor prizes (it missed out only for visual effects). Among the other leading Oscar contenders, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is now sitting in second place alone as it reaped two bids as well from the sound editors.
“Black Panther” likewise earned two nominations from the Mpse and moves into a tie for third with “BlacKkKlansman” as each has nominations from eight guilds. And with its two Mpse bids, “The Favourite...

We just heard from the Visual Effects Society with their nominees for the best of the year. These wizards of wonder were the 12th of 13 guilds and societies to weigh in with their choices following the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound mixers and writers. (The sound editors don’t chime in till the end of the month.)

“A Star is Born” kept its perfect track record with the guild awards on January 10, as it numbered among the nominations announced for both the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) and the Makeup and Hairstyling (Muahs) Awards.
Those nominations mean that his remake of the Hollywood classic is now 11 for 11 with the guild and society awards. It had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, directors, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, “A Star is Born” leads our predictions to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
With bids from both the costume designers and make-up artists & hairstylists, “BlacKkKlansman” is now in second place with mentions at eight of these precursors.
Sharing third place, with seven guilds apiece, are three films that merited nominations from both the Cdg and Muahs — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and...

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. However, the Cdg has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner.
Our Oscar frontrunner “The Favourite” as well as third and fourth-ranked “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” contend for best period costumes as do “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Besides the second-ranked Oscar contender “Black Panther,” the fantasy film nominees are “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Michelle Yeoh has a very special accessory for the 2019 Golden Globes. The Crazy Rich Asians star, who also appears in CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery, wore the very ring from her hit movie. The emerald engagement ring that belonged to her character, Eleanor Young, is actually Yeoh's. Mary E. Vogt, the Crazy Rich Asians costume designer, told The Knot that director Jon M. Chu had always envisioned an emerald ring. "Jon Chu, our director, who is fantastic, always said that he saw emerald as Eleanor's color," Vogt told The Knot. "He really felt that it was a very regal color, a very strong color, that it was just something that he associated with Eleanor, that green. And so he thought she...

A former Miss Teen World, originally from Liverpool, UK, making her acting foray in Indian films where she hobnobbed with the likes of Rajinikanth, Shankar, Vijay, Vikram, Dhanush, Akshay Kumar, Gautham Menon, and Ram Charan to name a few, in itself sounds like a movie script. And right now, with her upcoming sci-fi film 2.0 slated for release, it feels like a classic case of being in the right place at the right time. The actor plays a humanoid in the film, directed by Shankar, which also stars Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar. Incidentally, she had previously collaborated with Shankar for I (2015), and by her own admission,...

A fan of Hairspray in all its myriad adaptations over the years, on stage and on screen, Hairspray Live! costume designer Mary Vogt faced new challenges when called upon to give her one take on the beloved property. With the intense and very involved choreography on display in NBC’s latest live theater production—from directors Kenny Leon and Alex Rudzinski—Vogt quickly realized that she would need costumes that could hold up under pressure. When a show is steeped in politics and culture, costumes are the swiftest path to communicating what’s at stake. In “The Crown,” the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) expresses her rite of passage inside and outside the palace; in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” red dresses symbolize menstrual blood and political rage; in “American Gods,” costumes express the battle between the Old and New Gods; in “Feud,” wardrobes underscore the bitter rivalry between Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) and Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon); and in “Hairspray Live!,” the flamboyant costumes help unite Baltimore during the civil rights movement of the ’60s.
“The Crown”
The wedding and coronation dresses offered distinct challenges for costume designer Michele Clapton (three-time Emmy winner for “Game of Thrones”). Authenticity, particularly the iconic silhouette, was important for the wedding dress, as was a comfortable fit for Foy as Elizabeth. “We altered it around the arms...

You’ve seen Hairspray on Broadway and in the movies, but now it’s hitting the small screen on December 7 for the first time as a live TV performance musical (appropriately titled, Hairspray Live!) on NBC, featuring an all-star cast lineup, including Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Derek Hough and more.
And although you might recognize a few similarities to costumes in the past (the bright colors! the ’60s silhouettes!), Mary Vogt, the costume designer for this production, said designing looks for a live TV broadcast is unlike any previous iterations. “It’s not like in a play where...

2016, welcome to the sixties. NBC's latest live musical Hairspray Live is taking us back to the '60s, thanks to its seriously big, bold and beautiful colors, retro prints, and, of course, hairspray. So. Much. Hairspray. Mary Vogt is the costume designer behind the live production, which airs on Wednesday, Dec. 7, and she gave E! News all of the behind-the-scenes secrets of pop culture's latest trip to Baltimore, which includes 40,000 hand-sewn crystals. (No, that's not a typo!) With a few different wells to pull inspiration from, given Hairspray's long history since its debut in 1988, Vogt told us she tried to mix them all when it came to her take on...

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a pretty great new trailer for Kong: Skull Island.
The movie reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer”).
In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World”), Samuel L. Jackson (“The Hateful Eight,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Oscar winner Brie Larson (“Room,” “Trainwreck”), John Goodman (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Argo”) and John C. Here’s your first look at Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Kevin Hart in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Grudge Match.
In theaters on December 25th, De Niro and Stallone are old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match in director Peter Segal’s comedy.
In Grudge Match, De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to reenter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

It looks that Indian director Vidhu Vinod Chopra has some serious plans for his first English-language film titled Broken Horses.
All of the sudden we have three great guys on board for the whole thing – Anton Yelchin, Chris Marquette and Vincent D’Onofrio!
They will all star in a movie which is based on an original story written by Chopra and Abhijat Joshi.
Unfortunately, at this moment the only thing we know about the whole thing is that the film will apparently focus on gang warfare around the border between the United States and Mexico.
Still, with Yelchin, Marquette and D’Onofrio – we guess that nothing could possibly go wrong. In addition to these well-known guys, let us also add that Thomas Jane, Sean Patrick Flanery and Maria Valverde are also set to co-star in the movie.

On The Design Of The Costumes Worn By Bane And Catwoman: Bane’s character was to develop throughout the film, and his story, where he came from, why he is injured, is shown from early youth to the ‘film present’. He is given some reality, as with all things Nolan, thus making him more interesting and believable. This is how I like to work, and why Chris is such an interesting and exciting director to collaborate with. The same process applies to all leading characters. When my research began, I had never heard of Bane. Catwoman of course I knew a little of, especially Michelle Pfeiffer’s costume by the great Bob Ringwood (with Mary Vogt). However, as usual, we soon abandoned that path, and embarked on looking for real life parallels for both of them. The catsuit worn by Anne Hathaway is actually a two-piece, separated by a low slung,...

Welsh born costume designer Lindy Hemming started her career in the theatre, conceding she hardly watched any movies at all until moving to London. Yet several decades later Ms. Hemming has designed for such hugely successful features as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) and won an Academy Award for Topsy Turvy (1999). Of course her tenure with Pierce Brosnan as James Bond (and one for Daniel Craig) is well known, much like her role as Christopher Nolan’s regular costumer for his Dark Knight trilogy.
Having long been intrigued by Nolan’s unique vision, particularly after Memento (2000), Ms. Hemming was thrilled to secure the job of costuming Batman Begins (2005). Bringing both a sense of realism and ingrained theatricality to The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), in addition to a complete overhaul of the Batsuit; she now completes the arc with Bane and Catwoman for The Dark Knight Rises.
