"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a major moment in vampire media, but the show didn't limit itself to fanged heartthrobs. Buffy fought her fair share of demons and deities, but there was one type of villain that kept popping up throughout the hit series' seven seasons — robots. Probably the most memorable robot in the show is the Buffybot, a robot girlfriend commissioned by bad-boy vamp Spike to quench his unrequited crush. But before Buffybot, the android that started it all was Ted.
Ted is, by all appearances, your run-of-the-mill middle-aged man from suburbia, and he's dating Buffy's mom in the season 2 episode "Ted." He manages to win all of her friends over, but Buffy isn't having it. As it turns out, her suspicions are proven correct — Ted was a killer robot all along.
The robot is played by John Ritter, who was best known for the long-running sitcoms "Three's Company" and,...

"Buffy The Vampire Slayer" season 4 is one of the show's more contested runs, but episode 10, "Hush," is a fan-favorite. When silent, grinning demons called the Gentlemen come to Sunnydale and rob the characters of their voices, the series makes a rare turn into outright horror.
Series creator (and controversial figure) Joss Whedon, who personally wrote and directed "Hush," recounted in the episode's DVD commentary that he wanted to test himself as a visual storyteller. He felt the visuals in "Buffy" had become too functional; the dialogue was guiding the storytelling to simple shot/reverse shot techniques. The obvious way to break up this monotony was to make an episode with little dialogue.
"Hush" forces the characters to find new ways of communicating and the story to deliver information without language. Looking at his career wholistically, Whedon never really outgrew using his dialogue as a crutch, but even he acknowledges: "It...

Here you have another Scream Factory title, which will be judged a little harsher than usual. MGM recently released its own Blu-ray version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and for the most part, it was just fine. In addition to the MGM Region A release, there was also an Arrow Video-released Region B Blu-ray, which most fans have considered the “definitive edition” until now. I have nothing but respect for Arrow Video. They are basically the Criterion of B-movies right now. But I think this new TCM Blu-ray may just trump their excellent release, at least ever-so-slightly in the Pq department. As for the movie itself, I’m a big fan, always have been. I know it’s a divisive title among fans because it abandoned the relentlessly terrifying tone of the first movie, and opted for a more humorous approach, but it’s utterly fascinating. That opening scene is...

This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.

George Romero’s second collaboration with Orion Pictures was curious to say the least, considering how things turned out with their previous effort Monkey Shines. Perhaps Romero was still feeling the urge to scratch that obsessive itch to tackle the themes of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that inspired him with Monkey Shines and the opportunity to film in his hometown of Pittsburgh might have been an enticing perk. Ironically this time his troubles with Orion were caused by their drastic financial situation and The Dark Half was forced to sit on the shelf for two years before getting buried at the box office.
Romero’s adaptation of Steven King’s novel wasn’t a return to form, but there was definitely a creative spark that was lacking in his previous movie. The Dark Half was arguably his friend’s most personal work and it tackles themes that Romero could certainly identify with,...

By the time that you read this, Twilight Time's limited edition Blu-ray of Tom Savini's 1990 version of Night of the Living dead has long been sold out. Unless you're looking to spend some serious cash on Amazon or eBay, you're just not going to be able to buy it. With that in mind...
I'm not going to write a review for the Blu-ray as it's pointless. Simply put, if you didn't nab one of the 3,000 Blu-rays from Twilight Time's website for $29.99, you're shit out of luck. Believe me, though, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm writing this editorial only to exorcise some demons. To get this out of my system. The truth is that I've never been more annoyed with the transfer of a film in my entire life.
Note: The darker images to follow are from the new Blu-ray and have not been altered in any way.

Back in the mid-80s, horror fiction had become more than a little complacent. In most people’s minds, what passed for cutting edge genre fiction was the work of word generators such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Anne Rice. It was all spooky kids, rabid pets, daddy issues, and whiny, homo-erotic vampires.
By and large that was fine, but it is important to remember that the punk music scene had landed with both feet on the next of the public zeitgeist and stories of such archetypical monsters and mayhem didn't resonate with readers like they once did. The public had a new attitude and wanted a new breed of monsters to go with it...ones that better fit in line with their new nihilistic outlook.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere and to everybody’s surprise, came a group of young iconoclasts like Clive Barker, Poppy Z. Brite, Jack Ketchum,...

While producer Brian Yuzna is developing a remake of his 1985 classic Re-animator (in tandem with Ray Haboush’s Halcyon International Pictures, and set to be shot in 3-D!), development of a new TV series based on H.P. Lovecraft’s mad scientist Herbert West and various classic Hpl stories is progressing simultaneously in Hollywood. An anonymous source sent Fango a few exclusive pics (see ‘em below the cut) and the official show synopsis for Herbert West—Re-animator: The Series, a syndicated project currently in development at William (Furnace) Butler’s Transition Films.
Butler himself, on his way to Italy to shoot Demonic Toys 2 for Charles Band (see item here, where he discussed the project under his alias Silvia St. Croix), came clean to Fango with further details. (Ironically, the 1985 Re-animator film initially began life as a cable miniseries, before Yuzna, director Stuart Gordon and co-screenwriters Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris...

From the writing team behind Furnace and Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis comes Chronic, a film guaranteed to put you off your munchies. Three time Emmy Award winning FX wizard John Vulich (X-Files, Buffy-the Vampire Slayer)directs what's being described as a "terrifying action-horror film."
A bus load of troubled teens head to a rehabilitation camp and find themselves slowly transforming into ultra-violent murderers after they encounter a burning plane wreck full of chemically tainted marijuana.
Sounds cool doesn't it? Except don't expect it anytime soon. The film, budgeted at 3-5 million is currently looking for co-financing and/or co-production partner at the American Film Market. I think we speak for every pot-head horror fan out there when we say we hope they find it soon.
