With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.
To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. The Valentine’s Day slasher Lovers Lane (watch it Here) isn’t a very popular movie, but that isn’t stopping the folks at Arrow Video from giving it a special edition Blu-ray release… although they’re doing a couple months after Valentine’s Day, so genre fans won’t be able to add it to their collections in time for the holiday this year. The street date for this Blu-ray release is April 25th.
Copies are available for pre-order on the Arrow Video website, and fans can choose from the standard edition and the limited edition, which comes with an exclusive slipcover.
Directed by Jon Ward from a screenplay written by Geof Miller and Rory Veal, Lovers Lane has the following synopsis: Passions are aroused and old wounds reopened in this sassy post-Scream teen slasher based on the urban legend of “The Hook”. A steamy secret tryst that was...

After landing his first Emmy nomination this morning for his lead role on Apple TV+’s Severance, Adam Scott spoke with Deadline about his upcoming Party Down revival for Starz and the voter suppression drama series Quitman 10+2, which he’s developing through his company Gettin’ Rad Productions, alongside Don Cheadle’s This Radicle Act.
While Scott is not yet sure when Starz is planning to release the new season of the beloved catering comedy Party Down, in which he originally starred from 2009-2010, he said that it was “so much fun to make,” and that he “can’t wait” for people to see the new episodes. “It was strange 13 years later being in those pink bow ties and back at it, [but] I missed all of those characters so much, and of course, the actors so much,” he said. “It was so deeply fun, and we got Zoë Chao, and Jennifer Garner...

The 8th annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is all set to run for ten days this Feb. 11-20 in Missoula, Montana. This year, the fest will have a whopping 140 film programs, a growth that necessitates an expansion from its regular home at the Historic Wilma Theatre — where it will occupy two screens — to also feature screenings at the former Pipestone Mountaineering store.
Special events at the fest include a free opening night screening of How to Die in Oregon sponsored by HBO Documentary Films. The film, directed by Peter D. Richardson, examines the impact the legalization of physician-assisted suicide has had on the state. (In 1994, Oregon was the first state to legalize the practice.)
Also, indie rock band Yo La Tengo will perform their acclaimed live score of the films of pioneering French underwater documentary film director Jean Painlevé, something they have done for other film festivals all over the world.
