Apple Original Films has landed the global rights to “Fancy Dance,” which made its debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The drama, starring Lily Gladstone, marks the feature directorial debut for Erica Tremblay, who also co-wrote and produced the film.
“Fancy Dance” will debut in theaters and on Apple TV+ this year. The announcement comes on the heels of Gladstone’s Oscar nomination for her performance as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” also from Apple.
“Our film ‘Fancy Dance’ has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience.” Tremblay said in a statement. “As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the rich tapestry of cinema is a dream come true.”

Apple Original Films said Tuesday that it has landed global rights to Fancy Dance, the indie drama that stars Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone alongside Isabel Deroy-Olson, Ryan Begay, Shea Whigham, Crystle Lightning and Audrey Wasilewski. The 2023 Sundance selection marks the feature directorial debut of Erica Tremblay, who also co-wrote the script with Miciana Alise.
A 2023 Sundance Film Festival selection, Fancy Dance is set to make its debut in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year.
Tremblay’s film offers a nuanced account of the human costs of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women epidemic and the possibilities of healing for those left behind.

For over a year, director Erica Tremblay’s acclaimed Sundance drama “Fancy Dance” went undistributed without a means to see it. Its star Lily Gladstone, Oscar-nominated for another Native American-led film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has taken time from her awards campaign to champion the film and urge anyone in Hollywood to support it and give it a home.
Today, that effort has finally paid off. Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to “Fancy Dance” and will release it both in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. A release date was not specified, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In solid, Cherokee-centric drama “Fancy Dance” — a project supported by the Sundance Institute across multiple development labs — writer-director Erica Tremblay gives audiences a glimpse into Native culture, focusing on a family devastated by the indifference of the world beyond the reservation. Thirteen-year-old Roki’s mom has gone missing, and society has a funny way of showing its concern, to the extent that law enforcement seems more motivated to find a white fisherman’s stolen truck than to address the latest in an alarming number of disappearances.
That leaves any detective work up to Roki (promising newcomer Isabel Deroy-Olson) and her aunt Jax (Lily Gladstone) in a film that’s only nominally more interested in solving the case than the ambivalent authorities. Like recent Cannes Camera d’Or winner “War Pony” (which screens alongside “Fancy Dance” at this year’s SXSW film fest), Tremblay’s hardscrabble debut offers an unvarnished look at life on the rez,...

Cloaking a family drama in crime-film conventions, the plot of Native American filmmaker Erica Tremblay’s exceptional directorial debut concerns a young woman’s disappearance from an Oklahoma reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her. At the same time, Fancy Dance presents a broader narrative that emphasizes the connections that sustain families, communities and tribal nations, even when confronted with a legacy of disenfranchisement. Tremblay’s film validates the varied expressions of that experience with an affirming account of resilience and hope that sparkles with authentic performances, sensitive scripting and a genuine sense of place that resonate well after the final credits roll.
Fancy Dance finds its grounding in two standout turns from Lily Gladstone (Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon) and newcomer Isabel Deroy-Olson (Amazon Prime’s Three Pines) as two women struggling to hold out hope...

Fresh from his Emmy nomination for guest actor in a drama series for his appearance in “Euphoria,” Colman Domingo is set to executive produce P.J. Palmer short “North Star,” in which he also stars.
In “North Star” Domingo plays a patriotic and hardworking rancher and one half of a middle-aged, same-sex couple. His other half Craig (played by Tony award nominee Malcolm Gets) is dying. Tensions arise when Craig’s sister Erin (“Mad Men’s” Audrey Wasilewski) arrives unannounced to whisk him off to see out his final days with his “real” family.
Laura Innes (“Deep Impact”) and Kevin Bacon (“Footloose”) also star, playing televangelists who “push shame, fear, and division as the cornerstones of faith.”
“The Maze Runner’s” Chris Sheffield rounds out the cast.
P.J. Palmer (“The Grapes of Wrath: An American Story”) wrote and directed the short. He was previously series producer on Amazon Prime LGBTQ+ drama “Anyone But Me.

Graham Skipper's directorial debut is Sequence Break. A trailer for this sci-fi thriller was released late last year. In the film, a video arcade repairman, becomes trapped within one of the games he is working on. Sequence Break stars: Chase Williamson (The Guest), Fabianne Therese (Southbound), Lyle Kanouse, and Audrey Wasilewski. This title will debut exclusively on the horror subscription service Shudder, this May. A preview of the film's upcoming launch is hosted here. There are similarities between the promotional material of Sequence Break and David Cronenberg's Existenz (1999). Both films deal with video games and characters being pulled into the game's story. Reality is altered. And, both films involve characters having their bodies melded with a game. Biology and technology join together in Skipper's debut film! Sequence Break will show on Shudder, this May 24th. Horror fan can sign up for a Shudder subscription nearly pain free, at the link below.

With a hit CW series and a recent appearance in the Justice League‘s first silver screen outing now under his belt, one could say that everything’s coming up Flash. In fact, not only is the Flashpoint movie said to be still in some phase of production, but the Scarlet Speedster will soon headline an animated flick in the form of Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash.
Now, it should be noted that much like his aforementioned solo movie or the animated film that was based on the very same source material, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, the next direct-to-video Lego offering won’t afford Barry Allen the luxury of starring in a motion picture entirely free of his heroic cohorts. But the fact that Warner Bros. are allowing him to be the central focus is still nothing to shake Weather Wizard’s wand at.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Hesher is hardcore. That's for sure, but I was still intrigued by Spencer Susser's film, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Devin Brochu, Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson. Also in the cast of the drama which opens May 13th is veteran Piper Laurie who starred alongside Paul Newman in The Hustler, as well as Audrey Wasilewski and Lyle Kanouse. The Wrekin Hill Entertainment release is produced by Natalie Portman's Handsomecharlie Films, as well as The Last Picture Company, CatchPlay, Corner Store Entertainment and Filmula, in association with Dro Entertainment. Loud music. Pornography. Burning stuff to the ground. These are a few of Hesher's favorite things. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) brings into the lives of 13-year-old Tj (Devin Brochu)...

New "Hesher" trailer has been released. The one-and-a-half-minute preview, released via Apple, sees long-haired Joseph Gordon-Levitt pouring liquid on a car.
Using rock song as the background music, some scenes in the new trailer show pathetic situations. One scene sees Devin Brochu's character crying while having a dinner with his grief-stricken father and grandmother. In another scene, Natalie Portman asks Devin how he met wild Gordon-Levitt, before sad Devin answers, "It's kind of a long story".
The forthcoming movie revolves around Hesher, a guy who loves loud music, pornography, and burning stuff to the ground. He is the most unlikely person to help 13-year-old T.J. cope with the death of his mother, but he proves to be the only one who can truly free T.J. from his overwhelming sadness. The charismatic and dangerous Hesher drags T.J. out of loss and confusion by sheer force of will...

Yesterday we debuted the poster, now today we’ve got a new trailer. Newmarket Films has unveiled the second trailer for the upcoming indie Hesher directed by Spencer Susser and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rainn Wilson, Natalie Portman, Piper Laurie, Audrey Wasilewski, and Devin Brochu.
Synopsis: Loud music. Pornography. Burning shit to the ground. These are a few of Hesher’s favorite things. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) brings into the lives of Tj (Devin Brochu) and his father, Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he takes up residence in their garage uninvited.
Grief-stricken by the loss of Tj’s mother in a car accident, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter, and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more.

Last night, The Playlist debuted some new images from the upcoming indie-drama, Hesher. The film, Spencer Susser’s directorial debut, stars Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Rainn Wilson (Juno), Devin Brochu (In the Valley of Elah) and Audrey Wasilewski (Year of the Dog).
Synopsis: In the wake of his mother’s recent death, thirteen year old Tj (Brochu) finds the bumpy road to emotional recovery made a bit easier to travel thanks to his friendship with Hesher (Levitt), a greasy-haired anarchist who lives in a van, sports homemade tattoos, and has a soft spot for explosions.
Hesher debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to conflicting reviews, but with the talent at hand, blending of comedy and darkly elements and the hope of a low-key, accessible indie-drama, it shouldn’t be too hard to attract audiences. I’m on board, nonetheless.
