BET is planning to shine a light on the upcoming presidential election, with what it hopes will be a series of primetime election specials.
The first of those specials, “What’s At Stake: 2024 Election Special,” will debut June 4 at 10 p.m., on BET, BET Her, and VH1.
The special will be hosted by BET correspondent Ed Gordon, and will feature a roundtable discussion with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-ca), Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-oh), and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-tx), all members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
“I think clearly it’s an interesting time for the nation,” Gordon tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “Not just for the Black electorate, but for all of us, this question of democracy and where we stand and so BET felted it doubly important to make sure that we got in front of giving the Black viewer in particular what is needed to think about...

On Friday, former President Donald Trump mocked House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and her husband in the wake of a brutal attack in the family’s home last October.
Nancy’s husband Paul Pelosi’s skull was fractured in the attack where an assailant had beat him with a hammer.
Trump had previously responded publicly to the attack with trademark far-right conspiracies and called the attack a “sad situation.”
At a state party convention of California Republicans, Trump said, “We’ll stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi, who ruined San Francisco — how’s her husband doing, anybody know? And she’s against building a wall at our border, even though she has a wall around her house — which obviously didn’t do a very good job.”
Republicans cheered Trump as he rattled off attacks on several of California state’s most prominent progressive Democrats.

Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

Taraji P. Henson was the hostess with the most costume changes at the 2021 BET Awards, rocking multiple looks to pay homage to the Black women who’ve inspired her, ranging from Erykah Badu, Betty Boop, and performer/winner H.E.R.
The 2021 broadcast was all about “The Year of the Black Woman,” and Henson was particularly hyped to salute Queen Latifah with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.
“I’m a huge Queen Latifah fan. She taught me to go for it all in Hollywood — not just to be an actress, but to produce and direct,” Henson told Variety on the red carpet Sunday in Los Angeles. “She led the way and I’m so grateful for her getting being recognized. It’s long overdue.”

On the day after the guilty verdicts against Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Justice Department would conduct a civil investigation of the city’s police department.
Broadcast and cable networks, with correspondents fanned across the city, continued to cover the reaction, a mixture of a sense of relief but also continued trepidation over the fate of further police reforms.
Gayle King anchored CBS This Morning from Minneapolis in the aftermath of the guilty verdict against former Minneapolis police officer Chauvin, and told her co-anchors that there was a contrast to the day before, when, she said, she couldn’t sleep as “we could feel the tension.”
“This morning, you can really feel a lightness in the city, in addition to a beautiful skyline behind us,” said King, who interviewed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, George Floyd’s family attorney Ben Crump and Floyd’s brother Philonese.

Update, 2:23 Pm Pt: Jury deliberations are beginning in the Derek Chauvin trial after a day-long series of closing arguments as to whether the former Minneapolis police officer is guilty of murder in the death of George Floyd.
With the jury out of the room, Judge Peter A. Cahill denied a defense motion for a mistrial based on remarks made by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-ca). But the judge did say that it could form a basis for an appeal.
“I will give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” he said.
Waters told reporters on Saturday that she hoped that for a verdict of “guilty, guilty, guilty, and if we don’t, we cannot go away.” Asked what protesters should do, she said, “We have got to stay on the street. We have got to get more active.

Ahead of its Hulu release on Feb. 26, the virtual premiere of “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” espoused the film’s mission to authenticate Holiday’s real-life story.
“As part of Black History Month, it is important to correct Black history,” ABC News anchor Linsey Davis said during the film’s introduction. “This is a story we need to get right and the filmmakers and cast do just that.”
Reps. Maxine Waters and Bobby Rush followed Davis with remarks about Holiday’s cultural, political and social impact. Lee Daniels’ film highlights the government’s targeting of Holiday, played by Andra Day, and presents the jazz icon as a trailblazer.
“Many people have heard about her elegance, her music and her incredible talent, but many do not really know the kind of life Billie Holiday lived that was rooted in perseverance and courage,” Waters said.

Vlad Tenev, founder of retail stock trading app Robinhood, told a House Committee on Thursday that “the financial system should be open to everyone,” including frenzied buyers of GameStop and AMC Entertainment whipped up by a Reddit chatroom.
He apologized profusely that a funding rule had forced the app to subsequently block share purchases – a temporary restriction that was a focus of the five-hour hearing today. The stocks fell and some Robinhood users lost their shirts.
Tenev was testifying before the House Financial Services Committee alongside the CEO of a hedge fund that made a killing on GameStop and another that lost big in a short squeeze. Individual investor Keith Gill, known as Roaring Kitty from his YouTube videos and Reddit posts, bought GameStop and touted it on Reddit’s colorful WallStreetBets chatroom. On Monday’s episode of “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg called out Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) for his claims that Democrats were just as guilty of inciting violence as Republicans. The host first played a clip of U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) calling for Donald Trump’s impeachment. And then played Paul’s appearance on “Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace” where he proclaimed, “You can’t just criminalize Republican free speech and ignore all the Democrats who have incited violence.”
“That’s a false equivalent,” Goldberg responded, noting how Democrats like California’s Maxine Waters have rallied crowds but stopped well short of encouraging violence. “You can say Maxine Waters told people to get in people’s faces — we can point to 565 million times you-know-who incited violence. So I’m just going to point that out. One, two, three, four, five bad ideas perhaps… but 100 million bad ideas from...

AMC Entertainment and GameStop shares dipped Thursday amid high level meetings to discuss recent trading convulsions and as Reddit users argued furiously on the now infamous WallStreetBeats chatroom about whether to fold or fight.
GameStop shares are down 34%, extending yesterday’s losses. AMC Entertainment has slipped 19% and other stocks that were vigorously promoted on WallStreetBeats starting last week are mostly lower as the broader market posted gains. A Reddit-fueled frenzy saw retail traders send select stocks soaring, disrupting financial markets and spreading panic among the talking heads on CNBC.
Scrutiny of order flow and possible funny business in the stock moves started in earnest Thursday as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was set to meet with officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve, the New York Fed, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. “We really need to make sure that our financial markets are functioning properly … and that investors are protected,...

Film, TV, guilds and sports industry groups from NASCAR to the NFL on Wednesday sent a plea for action to lawmakers ahead of a key Capitol Hill committee meeting on pandemic insurance.
The hearing set for Thursday morning, called “Insuring Against a Pandemic: Challenges and Solutions for Policyholders and Insurers,” is the first major step in D.C. to address the nation’s Covid-induced insurance disaster since Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-ny) introduced the Pandemic Risk Insurance Act, or Pria, back in May. It faltered with a lack of support by the insurance industry and the myriad other pressing issues facing Congress.
In a letter (see text below) to Maxine Waters, Chair of the House Committee on Financial Services and other committee members, the coalition notes that the film, television and streaming industries provide 2.5 million jobs in all 50 states. Mark Zuckerberg again defended Facebook’s policy of not fact-checking political ads, as he faced withering criticism from lawmakers concerned about the spread of misinformation in the 2020 election.
The purpose of Zuckerberg’s appearance before the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday was to explain the company’s plans for Libra, a digital currency. But the hearing quickly delved into other issues, as the committee’s chair, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-ca) hammered Zuckerberg over issues of antitrust and diversity, telling him that “perhaps you believe that you are above the law.”
She said Facebook’s political ad policy “allows politicians to lie, mislead and deceive” but would “allow Facebook to sell more ads, thus making the company more money.”
“Our policy is we do not fact check politicians’ speech, and the reason for that is that we believe that in a democracy it is important that people can see for themselves what politicians are saying,...

A controversial church massacre scene included in Matthew Vaughn’s 2014 action film “Kingsman: The Secret Service” has been coopted by Donald Trump supporters and edited to depict the U.S. president killing news organizations and political opponents. As reported by The New York Times, the remixed “Kingsman” scene was shown at a Miami conference for Trump supporters. The event was held at the Trump National Doral Miami and organized by the group American Priority.
The scene from “Kingsman” features Colin Firth’s character Harry Hart entering a hate group’s church in Kentucky (modeled after the Westboro Baptist Church) and violently murdering its members. Harry is brainwashed during the scene and is not willingly killing people. The re-edited video puts Trump’s face on Firth’s body. President Donald Trump has not seen a doctored video shown to his supporters at one of his resorts in which he is depicted gunning down members of the media and other critics, but based on “everything he has heard, he strongly condemns the video,” White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham wrote on Twitter.
The video was shown last week at a three-day conference of the president’s supporters at the Trump National Doral Miami, the New York Times reported Sunday evening.
In his morning tweets, Trump did not address the video. He did urge followers to vote for Sean Spicer, his former press secretary, on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars. Spicer is set to appear again on Monday night.
The video includes a logo for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and shows the gunman walking through a church, shooting, stabbing and beating members of the news media, celebrities, and Trump’s political rivals.

CNN has called on President Trump to denounce a video that was shown at a pro-Trump conference last week, in which the president is depicted slaughtering figures representing media outlets.
The New York Times reported that the video was shown at a conference for Trump supporters held at Trump’s golf resort in Doral, Fla. According to the Times, the video shows a church massacre taken from the 2014 film “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” Trump’s face is superimposed on the shooter, while the victims’ faces are replaced by media logos — including CNN, Politico, NPR, and PBS — as well as images of Trump’s political opponents.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., and his former spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, were both scheduled to speak at the conference, which was put on by a group called American Prosperity. Representatives for each told the Times that they had not seen the video at the conference.

A violent video recently shown at a Trump resort shows a gunman resembling President Trump hunting down the president’s critics and members of the media.
The video was shown last week at a three-day conference of the president’s supporters at the Trump National Doral Miami, the New York Times reported Sunday evening.
The Times said it obtained the video from a man who attended the conference and recorded the footage with his phone. The clip was posted on social media tonight and is disturbing.
The video includes a logo for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and shows the gunman walking through a church, shooting, stabbing and beating members of the news media, celebrities, and Trump’s political rivals. The Trump campaign told the Times it had nothing to do with the video.
“That video was not produced by the campaign, and we do not condone violence,” said campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh.
