PARIS -- French pay TV channel Canal Plus announced Tuesday that it is ramping up its coverage of the Cannes film festival. Canal Plus, official sponsors of the festival, unveiled plans for over 160 hours of live coverage, including almost two hours of unscrambled broadcast every day of the festival. The channel is sending a 200-strong team to the Croisette for the duration. Coverage will include commentary from the red carpet by Laurent Weil, and a daily program broadcast direct from the Noga Hilton presented by Michel Denisot along with guests. 2005 also hails the return of the "Guignols", the populist satirical puppets who will bring their own scathing brand of wit to the Croisette. The awards ceremony takes place on the last Saturday of the festival, May 21. The closing ceremony will be following evening. The film lineup is uncharacteristically late in being announced this year, although word is expected around April 20. It is widely believed that Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith will open this year's jamboree.
