(Note: This post contains light spoilers for Netflix’s “Lost in Space.”)
Humans are looking to colonize the rest of the universe in Netflix’s reimagining of the 1960s sci-fi TV show “Lost in Space.” Of course, it doesn’t go very well — hence the name of the show.
When viewers catch up with the Robinson family at the start of the series, they’ve crashed onto an unfamiliar alien planet nobody knew was there. But it also wasn’t their actual destination. The Robinson family is one of many aboard a huge ship known as the Resolute, which is venturing to Alpha Centauri star system. It’s the closest to Earth, and the plan is to continue building a colony on one of the planets there.

It seems by the time we’re with the Robinsons on the show, the Alpha Centauri colony is already fairly well established, and multiple trips have been made there by humans. So what exactly is Alpha Centauri, and how far away is it?
Alpha Centauri is a system of three stars and the planets that revolve around them. There’s Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, two stars that form a binary star system, and a smaller red dwarf star known as Proxima Centauri. The first star is brighter and a little larger than our sun; the second, smaller and cooler.
The system might consist of the closest stars to our own sun, but it’s still pretty far away: 4.37 light years, or more than 25.6 trillion miles. We don’t really have the technology yet to send humans that far, either; on a conventional rocket, traveling at about 17,600 miles per hour, it would take about 165,000 years for humans reach Alpha Centauri (and then another 4.37 years for communications to travel back at the speed of light to let Earth know they’d arrived). Proxima Centauri is a little closer than the other two stars at 4.24 light years away, making it the nearest neighbor to the sun.

Obviously, on “Lost in Space,” the Robinsons weren’t gearing up for a journey of more than 100 thousand years. The show gets around the distance by introducing some interesting technology later in the first season — although it doesn’t provide much in the way of details about how it works. But we know that the Resolute has engines that get it to the colony and back again: At one point, Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker) mentions that mechanic Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) has been to Alpha Centauri and returned as part of his job.
As for whether there would really be a planet for people to live on in orbit around Alpha Centauri? There probably would be. Alpha Centauri is an attractive candidate for the search for exoplanets because Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are similar to our own sun. Astronomers have also discovered that Proxima Centauri has at least one rocky planet located in its “habitable zone.” That’s an orbit not unlike Earth’s, close enough to the star to keep the planet warm, but not so close that the star’s radiation scorches the planet’s surface.
Scientists are skeptical about the planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, known as Proxima Centauri b, though. Because of the smaller size and luminosity of Promixa Centauri, the chances the planet is so close that it would be tidally locked — meaning that one side always faces the star, making it perpetually day for one half the planet and perpetually night for the other — are higher. The nearer proximity to the star could also mean other problematic affects of gravity, like increased seismic activity. So while Proxima Centauri b is in the right orbit, it might not be habitable at all.

Scientists believe there could be more planets in the Alpha Centauri system and in it stars’ habitable zones, thanks to computer models. And the fact that Alpha Centauri A is a similar star to our own suggests there could be habitable planets in the system. So a colony for the Robinsons of “Lost in Space” to join isn’t too far-fetched — sci-fi writers have been suggesting it for quite a while.
As for right now, though, humanity doesn’t have much information about what planets actually exist in our neighboring solar system, and we have no way of getting there in a reasonable amount of time.

The classic ’60s iteration of Lost in Space created by Irwin Allen has a rabid cult following. I personally haven’t met any of these fans, but I know for sure that they are out there. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have created the 1998 film adaptation with an all-star cast that included William Hurt, Gary Oldman, and Joey Tribiani — er — I mean, Matt LeBlanc. Like many reboots of that era, the film adaptation was disposable and barely made a dent in cinematic history. With a gigantic budget that seems to put the ’60s TV series and ’98 movie to shame, Netflix’s reimagination of the classic series aims to change the course of Lost In Space while keeping in the spirit of the original. It’s progressive (they have Black daughter and Dr. Smith is a woman!), it’s flashy, the “Danger Will Robinson!” robot looks super-sophisticated, and most of all, the...

In the future the Robinson family is part of the twenty-fourth colonial fleet, on their way to Alpha Centauri to make a new life for themselves. But disaster strikes the mother ship, the Resolute, and the Robinsons find themselves at the other end of the universe on a mysterious planet, light years from their original destination. Also stranded on this mystery plant are the deceptive and dangerous Dr. Smith and the ships mechanic she saved during the chaos, Don West. The Robinsons set out to find other survivors and hope to find a way to get back to the Resolute so they may continue their voyage to their new home. Some 53 years ago a little sci-fi drama called Lost in Space first hit TV screens. The family-orientated series only went on to last three seasons; but that didn’t stop a feature film version, starring Matt LeBlanc and Gary Oldman, hitting the big screens in 1998 to a less than warm reception from critics. Thanks to Netflix, the series makes a return with a new and improved remake that catapults the old dated storyline firmly into the 21st Century for some much-needed relevance and believability.
For those that are way too young to remember the film, let alone the original series, the story is set 30 years in the future and still follows The Robinson family. A better title for “Lost in Space” would be “Mired in Mediocrity.”
Updating the 1960s series for the Netflix age was a good idea, but the execution is lacking in this new chronicle of the Robinson family’s spacefaring adventures. Once the drama gets past its first three episodes — which take too long to lay out a very simple series of premises — much of the action plays out, inevitably, in a forest outside Vancouver. Lots of sci-fi shows have similarly familiar and utilitarian settings, and far less money than this 10-episode drama, so they focus on creating meaty, surprising relationships and supplying vivid adventures.
“Lost in Space” has trouble doing those kinds of things on a consistent basis, nor does it successfully dabble in the light comedy of the original. As was the case with 2011’s “Terra Nova,” a very similar sci-fi chronicle set in a strange new world, those...

How do you make one of TV's all-time cheesiest science-fiction shows look cool?
That's what Netflix and writer-producers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless had to be asking themselves when they decided to revive Lost in Space – producer Irwin Allen's beloved-but-clunky 1960s space opera about a clan of bold braniacs marooned on a new planet while restarting human civilization. Because let's be frank: The original was no Star Trek. It was aimed mainly at kids. When the Robinsons – no Swiss family, they – found themselves, well, lost, they had to rely on their smarts and courage.

Netflix has released a new featurette and poster for their expensive-looking reimagining of Lost in Space. Although we recently just saw a teaser and full-length trailer for the series, this featurette and poster do a good job of selling the story, along with the massive scope that the show is seemingly striving for. The show comes from writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and showrunner Zack Estrin (Once upon a Time), so there’s a pedigree here for the show to potentially be successful.
Lost in Space stars Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Ignacio Serricchio, Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, Maxwell Jenkins, Parker Posey, and Raza Jaffrey. All 10 episodes of Lost in Space are set to debut on Netflix April 13, 2018. Here’s the trailer, along with the poster and the official synopsis for Lost in Space below:

Netflix has released a new featurette for the amazing looking sci-fi series remake of Lost in Space. We got our first look at the series in a trailer that was released last week and that trailer managed to impress a lot of people. When you think of Classic TV from the 1960s that were sci-fi in nature, odds are that your mind will go to the original Star Trek and not necessarily Lost in Space. But this show was the more family-oriented, campy drama that followed the adventures of the Robinson family (plus a couple of non-relatives) — and which is being reborn as a new Netflix series. Sent from Earth to explore the potential of another habitable planet, their mission is sabotaged and they find themselves… well, lost in space. But what they found were generations of fans who have celebrated the show for all these years. One was Kevin Burns, a producer who fell in love with the series and has carried the torch, putting together the massive 50th Anniversary Blu-ray complete series set in 2015 (with an unbelievable amount of extras), and who serves as executive producer of the reboot that launches...

Set 30 years in the future, colonization in space is now a reality, and the Robinson family is among those tested and selected to make a new life for themselves in a better world. But when the new colonists find themselves abruptly torn off course en route to their new home they must forge new alliances and work together to survive in a dangerous alien environment, lightyears from their original destination.
A Netflix Original, Lost in Space stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Die Another Day) as John Robinson, and Molly Parker (House of Cards, Deadwood) as Maureen Robinson, the family’s parental leaders who are struggling with their estranged relationship in the midst of trying to keep their family safe. “Danger, Will Robinson” and “That does not compute” will forever be associated with the 1960’s sci-fi TV show “Lost in Space,” created and produced by Irwin Allen. With their home away from home aboard the Jupiter 2, the Robinson family left Earth on October 16, 1997 on a five-and-a-half-year journey to a planet orbiting the nearest star. In the show, the family was made up of Professor John Robinson, his biochemist wife, Maureen, their children, Judy, Penny, and Will. Also on board was U.S. Space Corps Major and pilot Donald West, who is trained to fly and land the ship. But Dr. Smith, a spy, sabotages the Jupiter 2, reprograms the Robot, but is inadvertently stuck on board and the ship is thrown of course. Thus the premise of the show.
“Lost in Space” ran for three seasons from 1965 to 1968 on CBS, just about the same time “Star Trek” was on the air over on NBC.

A space colonization mission goes awry in the new trailer for Lost in Space, Netflix's reboot of the series that originally aired on CBS from 1965 to 1968.
The action begins when the Robinson family and two others, Dr. Smith and Don West, crash-land on an unknown planet. In their new environment, this group is forced to reckon with a volatile climate and potentially hostile alien lifeforms.
The youngest child, Will Robinson (Max Jenkins), befriends one of these unfamiliar beings while the family tries to figure out how to escape back into space.

Netflix has released a full trailer for their upcoming reboot of the classic sci-fi series Lost in Space and it seriously looks awesome! I liked what I saw in the first teaser trailer, but there's so much more excitement and adventure in this new trailer. It looks so much better than what I was expecting. This trailer got me incredibly excited for this series. Watch the trailer for yourself and tell us what you think.

About 2 weeks ago Netflx released the date announcement trailer for Lost In Space, where we got our first look at the Robinson family. Today they released the Official trailer for the show and we finally get a look at 'The Robot'. Let's check out the trailer below:
Alrighty then I'm in. My body is ready!! This time around it seems that the robot is not part of the original crew but an alien lifeform Will Robinson discovers after they get "lost". I gotta admit when i saw the robot it looked like some kind of advance scout for an invading alien force. This thing looks and sounds meanacing especially when it says that famous catch-phrase "Danger, Will Robinson!", part of me expected it to attack after saying it.
We also get a few scenes of Parker Posey who plays the role of Dr. Smith, the prerson responsible for for sabotaging...
