Exclusive: Queer advocacy group Out in Hollywood released its second annual list of the best unproduced queer-focused television pilot scripts of the past year.
The 2022 Out Loud List was selected from among hundreds of nominations submitted from across the industry and evaluated based on criteria including the strength of the writer’s voice, viability of the project to be sold in today’s marketplace, and conceptual freshness. A group of readers (including proudly out network/studio execs and producers) helped narrow down the list, which was then curated by Out in Hollywood’s board of directors.
“As challenges continue to present themselves against fundamental rights in our country and abroad, it’s more important than ever to continue championing marginalized voices,” says Logan Kriete, founder of the organization. “Lack of representation and advancement of our basic humanity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when we don’t tell these stories, and it...

Conan the Barbarian is coming to Netflix…and we don’t mean its movie archive! Rather, the streaming giant is moving forward with a live-action television series adapting the swords, sorcery and loincloths-laden mythos created by Robert E. Howard, famously depicted as comic book art from Barry Windsor-Smith and cemented in history as portrayed onscreen by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Pathfinder Media, of Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler, have conceived the Conan television project, which has been put into development by Netflix, according to Deadline. The project stems from a deal between Netflix and IP owner Conan Properties International, yielding the streaming giant exclusive rights to the multimedia archives—be it books, television and films—to adapt as new works. Indeed, it’s a strategy that mirrors widely-encompassing exclusive deals Netflix made in recent years to produce serial adaptations of author Roald Dahl’s work, and comic book titles under Mark Millar’s Millarworld branding.

A live-action TV series based on “Conan the Barbarian” is in development at Netflix, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The project is from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media. It is the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International, which is owned by Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. The two will serve as executive producers.
The series does not have a writer/showrunner or director yet. A search for those roles is underway.
Conan the Barbarian is based on the character by Robert E. Howard, who introduced the sword-wielding fighter in a series of short stories that were first published in 1932.
The character has been adapted in numerous forms, most famously by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982’s “Conan the Barbarian,” which was his first major role and rocketed him to international fame. He again played the character in the 1984 sequel, “Conan the Destroyer.

Exclusive: Netflix has put in development an epic live-action series based on Conan, the iconic sword-and-sorcery character created by writer Robert E. Howard, I have learned.
I hear the project, from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media, is the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International, owned by Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. The pact gives Netflix the exclusive option to acquire rights to the Conan literary library and develop works across TV and film, both live-action and animated.
The move would fit into Netflix’s strategy of acquiring globally recognizable IP to build an universe of films and TV series, including Roald Dahl’s novels, The Chronicles of Narnia books and comics publisher Millarworld.
A search is currently underway for a writer/showrunner to pen the Conan adaptation and director to helm the project. Malmberg and Wheeler will serve as executive producers on the potential series through their Pathfinder Media.

Exclusive: After 15 years as co-ceo of international production group Umedia, Adrian Politowski has stepped down to launch La-based production and finance outfit Align. The new company, co-founded by Umedia’s Nadia Khamlichi, intends to deploy $150M from now through 2022, focusing on three-five English-language projects per year across film and television, and with budgets in the $5M-$30M range. Align is backed by its officers as well as high-net-worth individuals out of Europe.
The company’s first project to launch, Blithe Spirit, began principal photography last week. A comedy, it’s directed by Downton Abbey’s Edward Hall and stars Leslie Mann, Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher and Judi Dench. Align is majority financing with additional equity secured by Fred Films.
Politowski tells me that after working with dozens of titles a year at Umedia, he “wanted to produce fewer films and be much more involved in them.” Khamlichi, with whom he co-founded Umedia,...

This past Saturday, Neil Armstrong passed away at the age of 82. Armstrong, the first human to walk upon the surface of the moon, is synonymous with the era of American excellence that culminated in his extraterrestrial heroics. His likeness and words (you know the quote) will live on through those who knew this extraordinary man personally and through the media that he reluctantly - but graciously - tolerated. Armstrong has been featured in well-respected projects such as Apollo 13 (played by Mark Wheeler) and the hit HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon (played by Tony Goldwyn), and he has achieved pop culture status through the use of his name/likeness (surely unauthorized) for minor characters in two recent mega-blockbusters: Transformers: Dark of the Moon (played by Don Jeanes) and Men in Black 3 (played by Jared Johnston). How is that for immortality? In Neil Armstrong's honor, and...
