1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office, Cruise took some time off and returned as a more seasoned leading man, with 1992’s A Few Good Men kicking off an unprecedented streak of hits. While Days of Thunder has a valued place in Tom Cruise’s filmography and remains a popular title, when it came out, the movie was considered such a disappointment that the movie’s two producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckkeimer’s deal with Paramount Pictures came to a fractious end. So what happened?
“Top Gun on Wheels” – that’s what everyone called Days of Thunder in the summer of 1990. The studio.

It's been 25 years since Cole Trickle punked Russ Wheeler and took the Daytona 500 ... but according to Jeff Gordon, it's time to get his ass back on the track ... in a "Days of Thunder" sequel! Fyi -- after the movie came out in 1990, there were rumors that Cole was loosely based on Gordon (even though it was really based on the late Nascar driver Tim Richmond). So, when we saw Gordon out in D.C. today...

Greetings Fango Fiends! It's time once again for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror, and which films scare them.
For our seventeenth edition, we're doing something different. Currently out on the 2009 Warped Tour, After Midnight Project asked if they could do a video edition for their list, and instead of doing their top 10 horror films like the 16 artists before them, they wanted to do a rundown of their favorite cinematic villains instead. The results? Somewhat unexpected, but damn entertaining.
The following video was taped after the band performed on June 12th in Hartford, Connecticut:
So there you have it. Not as horror-themed as you'd expect (almost Starlog material), but come on, Cary Elwes (Saw) as Russ Wheeler in Days Of Thunder? Fucking classic.

Days of Thunder is processed cheese. It is extremely easy to digest (and sometimes deliciously entertaining), but it is still processed cheese nonetheless. This 1990 popcorn flick about race car drivers, the men who build their machines and the women who love them has about as much substance as a Twinkie with a Tootsie Role stuffed inside of it. If you're in the right frame of mind, it can be just as disgustingly delicious, too. The movie follows hotshot Nascar newcomer Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise) as he and his mentor and legendary pit crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall) pull out all the stops to try and win at Daytona. Along the way he engages in playful jousting with fellow driver Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker), deals with egotistical upstart Russ Wheeler (Cary Elwes) and ends up romancing his doctor Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman) after a crash leaves him psychologically battered. It's the usual Hollywood hokum,...
