Robert J. Dowling, who carried The Hollywood Reporter to great heights during his 17-year run as the trade paper’s classy publisher and editor-in-chief, has died. He was 83.
Dowling died Friday at his home in Santa Monica after a short battle with cancer, a family spokesperson announced.
Dowling joined THR in September 1988, taking over from Tichi Wilkerson, widow of the newspaper’s founder, William R. Wilkerson, after she sold the company to BPI Communications for 26.7 million.
The publication saw huge growth under Dowling amid an explosion in media coverage of Hollywood, and he helped reshape THR into a fierce, underdog rival to the industry’s other five-days-a-week trade, Daily Variety.
THR’s Key Art Awards program (now known as the Clio Awards), its annual Women in Entertainment breakfast — and the accompanying Sherry Lansing Award — and its Next Generation initiative thrived under his leadership...

The home where infamous mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was shot and killed 75 years ago has come on the market in Beverly Hills. Listed with Myra Nourmand of Nourmand & Associates, the Spanish Colonial-style mansion on North Linden Drive has an asking price of 16.995 million.
Siegel — the ruthless gangster who socialized with Hollywood stars and also drove the early development of Las Vegas — didn’t own the house. He leased it for his mistress, Virginia Hill, who served as a courier for the mob. On the night of June 20, 1947, Siegel was killed by an assailant who fired at him through the front window of the home with an M1 Carbine, dispatching him with two gunshots to the head. The case was never solved. (A photo in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner collection shows a detective pointing to five bullet holes in the wall the day after the murder.

“Out Jews!” howled Josef Goebbels. “A dirty film made in America!” The Nazi propagandist was on his feet in the front row of the balcony at Berlin’s ornate Mozartsaal, frothing at the motion picture screen. Behind Goebbels, dozens of brown shirted thugs joined in the jeering — and released white mice and set off stink bombs. Women screamed and stood on their seats. Moviegoers bolted for the exits; several patrons, taken for Jews, were beaten up. The house lights went up, the theater was cleared, and the show was shut down. [*]

It's no surprise that Kristen Stewart's Snow White in "Snow White and the Huntsman" is going to be a badass. It's just a bit surprising to hear her tell just how badass the fairest of them all is going to be.
"I'm fighting evil—I'm fighting the most evil motherf--kers-and it's fine that they're being killed. It's anguish. It's literally f--king anguish. She takes absolutely no pleasure in ever hurting anything," Stewart said in an interview with Box Office Magazine. "I'm exhausted right now and I was thinking, 'The fight stuff is coming up, maybe that won't be so bad.' And then I realized that they're probably going to be my most emotional scenes because I'm killing people and I'm Snow White."

Famous for being fan-friendly, Johnny Depp has never been much of a friend to the press, so the fact that he agreed to a sit-down with Larry King as he promotes his film "The Rum Diary" is... well, a big deal.
Depp was one of a handful of celebrities that King had on his wishlist. "We had a great time yesterday with Johnny," King tweeted. "He could not have been nicer! We taped the interview in his private office."
In addition to opening up about his life, his work, and his relationship with Hunter S. Thompson, Depp shows King his personal paintings and memorabilia in the special, which is set to air on Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. Est on CNN.

Lifetime is developing a period drama series about The Hollywood Reporter founder William Wilkerson, which is being produced by Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Graham King’s Gk TV. The project, written by Rob Cooper (Stargate: Universe), chronicles the colorful life of Wilkerson, a compulsive gambler who started off as a film executive in New York; lost all his money on Black Friday; founded The Hollywood Reporter; launched a slew of Hollywood nightclubs, including Ciro’s; founded The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas; and got entangled with the mob and had to go into hiding in France. “He was the original Don Draper,” Gk TV president Craig Cegielski told British trade Tbi, which broke the story. “He eventually became the conduit between the mob and Hollywood.” According to Tbi, Depp may make a cameo appearance on the potential series, which seems a rather unorthodox choice for female-centric Lifetime. On the film side,...
