Fred Ward, iconic character actor and star of films like “The Right Stuff,” “Tremors,” “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins,” “Miami Blues,” and “Henry & June,” has died. He passed away on Sunday, May 8, as confirmed by his representatives. The Golden Globe winner was also known for starring in Robert Altman films like “The Player” and “Short Cuts.”
Fred Ward is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie-France Ward, and his son, Django Ward.
On screens since the early 1970s after serving in the U.S. Air Force and stints as an order cook, boxer, and a lumberjack in Alaska, Ward was known for his versatility in both comic and dramatic roles. He could play author Henry Miller in “Henry & June,” the world’s first Nc-17 movie, or a dirt bike rider in “Timerider: The Aventure of Lyle Swann.” But his first major role came in Clint Eastwood’s 1979 “Escape from Alcatraz...

Claes Bang has terrified audiences across with the world with his spirited portrayal of Count Dracula for the BBC. Now he’s moving closer to the present with his latest film The Burnt Orange Heresy in which he stars with Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland. Steven Goldman sat down with the actor to talk about his latest film and what’s next.
Claes Bang has got a thing for art – at least as far as the movies go.
The Danish actor first captured the global spotlight as a crisis-juggling museum curator in The Square, taking top honors in Cannes in 2017. Last year he was on the trail of Nazi-looted art in The Last Vermeer, which premiered at TIFF. This year, his focus shifts back to contemporary abstracts with the sexy neo-noir thriller, The Burnt Orange Heresy.

Disneyland shut down, production has been halted worldwide and “Succession” Season 3 is extremely delayed. But even in this dumpster fire of a year, the Variety staff manages to find ways to be grateful. Below, read what the writers, editors and reporters at Variety are thankful for in entertainment this Thanksgiving.

The rock star plays a wealthy art dealer mysteriously sheltering a renowned painter in this eventful melodrama
A sprightly and mischievous cameo from Mick Jagger is one reason to enjoy this movie. Donald Sutherland’s brief performance as a reclusive artist is another. It’s a suspense drama-thriller from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Scott Smith who has adapted the 1971 novel by crime author Charles Willeford. Claes Bang plays a somewhat raffish and disreputable Milan-based art critic, James Figueras. He is an egotistical individual with a morbid fear of flies.
Figueras is having a passionate affair with a beautiful American, Berenice (Elizabeth Debicki), who dropped in to one of Figueras’s breezy, specious lectures and was amused in spite of herself. Figueras asks if she will come with him for the weekend to the home of Joseph Cassidy (Jagger), a fabulously wealthy art dealer and connoisseur who has just extended a mysterious invitation...

Claes Bang plays a man who does something highly inconceivable and goes off the rails because of his decisions in Giuseppe Capotondi’s drama, “The Burnt Orange Heresy.” But the actor doesn’t necessarily think his character is a “psychopath or maniac.”
“I don’t think he knows at the beginning of the film what’s going to happen three days later,” Bang told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. “I don’t think he’s a psychopath or maniac in that sense. It’s sort of what happens that drives him where he ends up going and I think that’s far more interesting… With this script, it was not so much down to me having to come up with stuff for this to be real — it was really shooting the scenes as they were written.”

Who’s ready for a bit, no lots, of culture? No, well let’s sweeten the deal. Yes, you’ll be in the world of odd artists and their deep-pocketed patrons, but the paintings are on the walls of a swanky mansion over in Italy. Hmm, some refinement and a virtual “vacay”. And who are our guides? That’s where the romance sneaks in via a most photogenic pair of European rising stars. Oh, and they’re backed up by a veteran film actor (this is his seventh decade on screen) and an honest to gosh, no debate about it, rock and roll god. Somehow this quartet is connected by the piece known as The Burnt Orange Heresy.

Sony Pictures Classics has re-scheduled Guiseppe Capotondi’s The Burnt Orange Heresy for Aug. 7.
The label bought the thriller, which closed Venice last year. It was there that Capotondi and the pic’s stars Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland won the Fondazione Mimmo Rotella Award.
Pic, based on the novel by Charles Willeford with a screenplay by Scott B. Smith follows a charming and ambitious art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang), who has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Sutherland). What a missed opportunity we have here. For two thirds of The Burnt Orange Heresy, this art world centered suspense film does a lot of things right. There’s quality acting, a sexy vibe, lovely settings, and a sense of foreboding doom that one can’t quite put their finger on. Then, in the third act, it all goes wrong. Characters begin acting completely randomly, ruining almost all of the goodwill generated by the first two acts. Now out in select theaters, this flick ends up being an interesting failure, when it was well on its way to being a small scale success. The movie is a drama, mixing suspense and thriller elements, all within the world of art, art criticism, and artists. Art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang) is lecturing in Italy when he meets American Berenice Hollis (Berenice Hollis). Drawn to his devilish charm, Berenice jumps into bed with him,...

James Figueras (Claes Bang) is an art critic so charmingly slick he can sell a tourist audience in Milan on a painting simply by making up stories about it. In attendance at his lecture is Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), a vacationing teacher from Minnesota — or is she a seductive tower of blond ambition with a secret agenda? Given the laws of cinematic attraction, their coupling is as quick as it is inevitable. So it’s no surprise that filthy-rich art collector Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) extends an invitation for both...

Knotty in the way mystery movies used to be, Giuseppe Capotondi’s neo-noir thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy” slowly entraps an unsuspecting victim within its thorny plot and keeps the audience guessing — up to a point.
If we’re familiar enough with these stories, we might predict what darkness lies ahead for these characters. But even if the tale feels a little stale, a little dated, the electric performances between the three main leads — Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland — restores its sense of mystery.
The movie opens on a dashing art critic practicing his presentation as he works out, gets dressed and packs his books to sell. James Figueras (Bang) eventually gives the performance to a group of aging tourists who watch him defend his noble profession with an impish smirk. James tricks and deceives his listeners with half-truths and whole-lies but doesn’t seem to have any...

, Giuseppe Capotondi’s “The Burnt Orange Heresy” is a movie about the value of art that offers little in the way of artistic value. What it does have — in spades — is Elizabeth Debicki swanning around the well-monied banks of Lake Como as a mysterious connoisseur whose sultry exterior may (or may not!) hide another meaning under its surface.
Beguiling even as the silly film around her struggles to square high-brow gloss with low-rent delight, the bird-like “Widows” actress manages to soar above the rest of the action without insisting the material is far beneath her; Mick Jagger’s cameo as a devious art dealer could only dream of painting such a distinct impression. “Never let a thing’s worth obscure its value,” someone cautions early on, but Debicki takes pleasure in denying us that chance. The 37th edition of Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival returns to downtown Miami with more than 125 feature films, documentaries, and short films from 30 countries, screening March 6-15. This year's edition opens with The Burnt Orange Heresy (pictured), directed by Giuseppe Capotondi and starring Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Debicki, and Claes Bang. It's the fifth screen adaptation of the late Miami noir novelist Charles Willeford; the festival will also screen a 35mm print of another Willeford adaptation, George Armitage's Miami Blues, starring Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh, to mark the film's 30th anniversary. The festival closes with Cristina Constantini and Kareem Tabsch's documentary Mucho Mucho Amor, about the late Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado, a flamboyant figure who charmed many with his televised horoscopes....

"Think of the splash it would make... No critic has spoken to this guy in over 50 years." Sony Classics has revealed an official trailer for the film The Burnt Orange Heresy, an adaptation of a classic novel about the art world written by Charles Willeford. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year at the end of the festival, a delightful surprise (here's my review). Claes Bang stars as an art critic who gets in over his head when he's invited by an eccentric collector to his villa near Lake Como, only to learn there's a long lost painter hiding out in the guest house. His affair with an American woman, played by Elizabeth Debicki, complicates things further. The eccentric cast includes Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, and Rosalind Halstead. This is another trailer that gives away too much, but I love this film and must support it anyway. Here's...

This was arguably one of the better jury decisions in years, a decision decidedly in favor of cinema as an art for and of the masses with the potential of making serious amounts of people ponder, maybe look differently at what they thought and believed (in) so far—though film did not have all the answers.Besides: This pair perfectly sums up the main themes and concerns addressed in the competition as well as some of the outstanding films to be found in the...

Sony Pictures Classics has nabbed the rights to “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” Variety has learned.
The indie label plans to release the film in 2020. The Italian-American thriller was directed by Giuseppe Capotondi and stars Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland. Scott Smith adapted Charles Willeford’s novel of the same name, transporting the action from Florida to Italy’s Lake Como.
“The Burnt Orange Heresy” is set in the world of high art and has a Hitchcock-ian feel. The film follows a swindler (Bang) who sets his sights on obtaining a rare painting by the reclusive genius Jerome Debney (Sutherland). His path soon intersects with those of a fabulously wealthy art collector (Jagger) and an American teacher touring Europe (Debicki). Mick Jagger was a good get for “Burnt Orange Heresy” producers in more ways than one. They knew the Rolling Stones frontman would raise awareness of the indie project — at the very least, there was sure to be curiosity about his first credited movie role since 2002’s “The Man From Elysian Fields” – but he also helped backers qualify for European subsidies.
And they were definitely trying to do that.
Producers had already changed the original Florida setting in Charles Willeford’s pulpy 1971 novel to Lake Como, Italy, lined up Giuseppe Capotondi to direct, and “The Square” star Claes Bang and European-Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki for key roles. Casting the British musician as a wealthy art collector of dubious morality further helped the production meet European quotas on top of Italian subsidies.

A spiky romance laced with art-history references and the trappings of a sleekly elegant neo-noir, The Burnt Orange Heresy is a mutt of sorts but no less a pleasure to spend some time with — even if petting it might not be advisable. This classy adaptation of Charles Willeford’s best noir novel, originally published in 1971, changes the location from the Everglades to the shores of Lake Como, in Italy, where a European art critic and his American weekend fling visit a rich collector and meet the hermit artist who lives on his estate.

“The Burnt Orange Heresy,” starring Mick Jagger as a reclusive art dealer alongside Elizabeth Debicki (“Widows”), Claes Bang (“The Square”) and Donald Sutherland, has been selected as the Venice Film Festival closer.
The English-language art heist movie marks Italian director Giuseppe Capotondi’s first time back at Venice since 2009, when his debut feature film, the taut thriller “The Double Hour,” made a splash on the Lido. That film won its star, Kseniya Rappoport, the best actress prize.
Described as a contemporary “erotic neo-noir thriller” in the festival’s synopsis, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” sees charismatic art critic James Figueras (Bang) hook up with provocative and alluring fellow American Berenice Hollis (Debicki). “He’s a classic anti-hero in the making with a charm that masks his ambition, whilst she’s an innocent touring Europe, enjoying the freedom of being whoever she wishes,” the festival said.

He’s been on the force for a while, long enough to see an old partner (Don Johnson) get a fancy desk job and help get a new partner, Anthony (Vince Vaughn), busted for excessive force. The two of them were filmed interrogating a suspect — if you’d call placing your boot on the neck of a handcuffed man on his fire escape in broad daylight “interrogating.” The brass is not happy. Last week, during the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, writer/director Mickey Keating enjoyed the premiere of his latest genre effort, Carnage Park, as part of the fest’s Midnight movies lineup. The gritty, crime-inspired film co-stars Pat Healy and Ashley Bell and follows their characters on a dangerous journey through the mountainous California desert one fateful day.
Daily Dead had the chance to chat with Keating, Bell, and Healy about their collaboration together on Carnage Park, respective approaches to the project, thoughts on their characters, and more.
Mickey, what was your approach to Carnage Park in terms of making it feel like an authentic film from the 1970s?
Mickey Keating: What was really important for us was to make something that wasn’t a spoof or wasn’t like a caricature of the 1970s. We wanted to make it as authentic as possible. That’s my favorite era of American filmmaking,...

It has been a very interesting time for the FX Network, hasn’t it? Veteran dramas Justified and Sons Of Anarchy have continued to thrive over the years, with the latter show approaching its seventh season. Meanwhile, other series such as The Americans, Louie and Archer are genuine critical success stories, with The Americans receiving high praise for its latest season. The cable network does not look to be slowing down anytime soon, either, as the well-received Fargo wraps up its debut season and upcoming shows like The Strain and Tyrant are getting some pretty solid buzz as well. Unfortunately, there is one promising TV drama pilot that FX has decided to move on from.
That drama pilot is Hoke, which starred Paul Giamatti as Hoke Moseley, a hardboiled and “possibly insane” homicide detective living in the world of pre-chic Miami during the early-1980s. The show was to be...

Something like a consensus seems to have developed among fans of the excellent "Justified" (FX) that the show's 5th season, which ended on Tuesday, has been the show's best since the sainted second. That was the one for which Margo Martindale won her Emmy as hillbilly Queenpin Mags Bennett. We agree, and would add that the blueprint for the 6th and final season offered in the episode's final minutes was thrilling, promising both the fulfillment of burgeoning fatherly impulses in Raylan, hinted throughout the season, and a cathartic resolution of his contentious lifelong relationship with eloquent sociopath Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). (FX is already developing a series that could be a natural successor to "Justified," an adaptation of Charles Willeford's Hoke Moseley novels from Scott Frank and Curtis Hanson, to star Paul Giamatti.) As his hugely entertaining scenes sparring with Goggins have demonstrated from the beginning, Olyphant is at...
