At a time when the UK film industry seems increasingly inward-looking, a recurring theme of the 46 films which Jeremy Thomas has produced has been cross-cultural -- whether it’s Japanese director Takeshi Kitano looking at America in Brother (2000) or Bernardo Bertolucci retelling Chinese history in the Best Picture Oscar-winner The Last Emperor (1987). He also exec-produced Takeshi Miike’s 13 Assassins, which competed at Venice last month and will work on Miike's next pic. Thomas specialises in filming the un-filmable, whether William S Burrough's novel Naked Lunch or Jg Ballard’s notorious Crash or his latest plan: a pic about North Korean dictator Kim-Jong il. Currently in post on David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, Thomas gave the keynote interview at Wednesday’s Film London Production Finance Market as part of the BFI London Film Festival which is where I interviewed him. As the former chairman of the British Film institute, he...

Given how great he was in Inception, this doesn’t exactly count as surprising news, but it’s still very welcome: according to Deadline, Christopher Nolan has recruited Tom Hardy for a major role in the next Batman film. Before anyone hits the ‘net to scream “Tom Hardy Is The Riddler!!!1!!” A Word Of… Sorry, left the caps lock on there. A word of caution: there is zero information as to what his role might be, and only an insinuation that he’s playing a villain. But while there’s zero confirmation on his part, feel free to go nuts with your guesses – would he make a good Riddler? Is he taking on one of the other iconic characters from Bats’ rogues’ gallery? Or could he be Robin? Kidding on that one. We hope…Hardy, of course, has been shooting Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy for Thomas Alfredson and he also...

Summit Entertainment has optioned the right to turn Julie Cross' upcoming sci-fi novel Tempest into a big screen movie. I should note that this has nothing to do with the famous William Shakespeare play or the Julie Taymor-directed big screen adaptation which hits theaters in December. Here is the plot synopsis from the author's blog: Tempest is the first in a trilogy about a 19-year-old time traveler who witnesses his girlfriend's murder and inadvertently jumps back two years; stuck there, he's recruited by a shadowy government agency run by the man he thought was his father and vows to save his girlfriend no matter the cost. No word on if the movie will be based on the three book arc or just the first book of the series. I'm assuming the latter, as that would allow for the opportunity to have a new franchise (which Summit needs as Twilight...

Anytime Peter Morgan sets pen to paper I’m interested and Variety are reporting a confirmed cast list for Morgan’s adaptation of John LeCarre’s classic Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
It is impossible to write anything regarding this project and not mention Alec Guinness, whose presence in the BBC adaptation was something truly special , and this new film version, which is being directed by Let The Right One In’s Thomas Alfredson, needs to have a pretty impressive cast to establish a new identity.
Just as well then that the following names have been confirmed for the film. Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes and Michael Fassbender have apparently all signed on to bring forth LeCarre’s famous story of one George Smiley (the role Oldman is supposed to have been chosen for) and I for one am glad to see Colin Firth’s continued diversion from the soul...

We were already primed to be excited for the new film version of John Le Carré’s classic espionage novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, but now that a chunk of the main cast is locked on place, we’re even more eager to see this one come to life. Why? Try Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes and Michael Fassbender all jumping aboard.Oldman, Firth and Fassbender were all touted as likely stars last month, and now Variety reports that they’ve all signed on, the film is just that much more enticing. And while David Thewlis appears to have dropped out of the running, Fiennes is hardly a second-rate replacement. Plus, there are likely more announcements to come, and it’s always possible that Thewlis is still haggling over a deal to appear.Let the Right One in director Thomas Alfredson is the man charged with getting the story on to the big screen,...

Favorite Vocal/Singing Coach: Jackie Presti "Singing is a big coordination act, and I think a lot of people come in focusing on one aspect," says voice therapist and teacher Jackie Presti. "It's sort of like juggling and riding a bike and reciting Shakespeare at the same time."Clearly, Presti, who's also a singer, musician, and conductor, hits the right notes with her students. Her knowledge of both technical and artistic matters, not to mention her versatility and flexibility as a teacher, appealed to Valerie Ryan Miller, who has studied with her for three years. "After developing a strong belt, and a lot of vocal tension," Miller says, "I came to Jackie, who has expanded my range enormously—we are talking octaves!

John Le Carre’s Karla trilogy is something of an adored classic in spy fiction, and has already been partially adapted for the screen once, with Alex Guinness playing the suited hero George Smiley in the 1979 BBC series Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But now, with Let The Right One In director Thomas Alfredson in charge of getting a big screen version made, Gary Oldman is in negotiations for Smiley.According to the Mail’s Baz Bamigboye (via The Playlist), Oldman, Colin Firth, Michael Fassbender and David Thewlis are all circling roles in what already sounds like a solid shot at a cinematic classic.Spy follows the hunt for a mole within “the circus”, as former MI5/MI6 operative-turned author Le Carre (real name David John Moore Cornwell) dubbed MI6. Various intelligence bosses and other bureaucrats are suspected, including Smiley himself, who hides a razor sharp intelligence beneath a seemingly awkward manner.

Twitter has finally decided to start making money. They're buying or making services and software to fill the holes in their own business plan, and they've rolled out a plot for advertising, the first stage of which is called Promoted Tweets. All of that seems to spell trouble for the existing third-party Twitter infrastructure, including developers of apps, services, and even advertising.
So why aren't third-party app developers shaking with fear?
Twitter has never been shy about plans to one day benefit from the innovations of third parities that, for a good long while now, have benefited from Twitter. Third-party developers, in other words, must have seen this coming. Even before announcing Promoted Tweets, Twitter had begun "filling the holes" in their product line. There was no mobile app, no image uploader, and no URL shortener, all of which are essential for Twitter users. So the company took a smart course and bought Tweetie,...

I started walking around London in my mind. It started when I wrote the entry about Jermyn Street. In mentioning Wilton's I should have mentioned that on my first visit there I ordered roast turkey with fresh peaches. I know, it sound like the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore routine about the Frog & Peach, but nevertheless that's what I had, with a raspberry syllabub for dessert.
In my mind my walk didn't stop when Jermyn Street ended at St. James. I imagined walking down St. James and into the park, and around the ponds. And admiring the view of Westminster Abbey from the bridge. And then perhaps out one end of the park toward Victoria or into Pimlico.
Pushing on now, following an instinctive guidance system in my mind, I stop for coffee at that little street (I know just how to find it) with all the cafes and an assortment of street venders.

Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held tonight and it's hard to say there were very many surprises as much as there were disappointments. Of course, I think the fact a film like Sherlock Holmes gets recognized for an award while The Hurt Locker goes home empty-handed is a complete sham. I believe Avatar is worthy of awards, but technical awards, which it will win at the Oscars, but since those aren't handed out at the Globes it means the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa) feels the need to dote on it in categories where others are more deserving.
Avatar took home Best Picture (Drama) and director James Cameron won over the presumptive winner Kathryn Bigelow. This only causes agitation for me personally, because the whole show continued celebrity love while the smaller more deserving names were consistently overlooked.

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Some critics may have taken potshots at James Cameron's screenplay for "Avatar," but it has earned a nomination from the Writers Guild of America, which announced nominations for the 2010 WGA Awards on Monday.
Cameron -- who was also nominated by the WGA for "Titanic," though that movie failed to earn a best screenplay Oscar nomination -- will compete for the honor with Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The nominations are in for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards and the leader at the moment is Up In the Air with six nominations, followed by Nine with five and Inglourious Basterds and Avatar both earning four nominations each. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me personally is the absence of In the Loop in the Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) category as well as Peter Capaldi not getting a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nomination. It's a great film and this was really it's only chance and it has come up empty.
As far as nominated surprises go, Tobey Maguire getting a Best Actor (Drama) nom for Brothers is surprising, but at the same time it is well-deserved (even if I think Jake Gyllenhaal had the best performance in that flick). Coen brothers fans will be happy to see Michael Stuhlbarg getting a nomination for A Serious Man...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominations this morning for the 67th annual Golden Globes Awards. "Up in the Air" received six nominations including Best Picture, Drama, while "Nine" received five noms including Best Picture, Comedy (huh? "Nine" is definitely Not a comedy!).

Sandra Bullock received two acting nominations. One for drama for "The Blind Side" and one for comedy for "The Proposal." She's really having a terrific year!
Meryl Streep is also having a terrific year. She's a double contender for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical for "Julie and Julia" and "It's Complicated."

While you were sleeping, innovation plotted its comeback. Here's today's innovation news:
President Obama's auto task force appears ready to keep Gm and Chrysler afloat with more bailout loans, pending concessions from management, the auto unions, and Gm's bondholders. "It's like a Rubik's cube, trying to untwist it and trying to get all the colors to line up," says task-force chief Steven Rattner. When we offered up 25 ideas for how to fix the auto industry, we didn't know about the Rubik's Cube strategy. So here's one more: Let's get the guy in this video to help. We’ve been keeping an eye on Luster, the latest from Devil’s Chair, Broken and Blood River writer-director duo of Simon Boyes and Adam Mason - regular podcasters on this site - and today our patience was rewarded with an exclusive first look at the sales promo for the picture. Now, this is not a trailer per se, but a reel prepared to present and sell the film at the recently concluded American Film Market. It hasn’t been through post production yet so it’s still a bit ragged around the edges in parts but it’s more than enough to show that Mason has taken a surprising direction with this one, leaving the intense horror of his previous pictures behind in favor of absurd black comedy.

The folks at Son of Jason Films sent Fangoria a trio of exclusive clips from their new fright feature Sam Hell; you can see them below. The movie was directed by Michael Bayouth, who was also one of the producers and gives the company its name: He’s the offspring of Ted White, who played masked maniac Voorhees in Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter.
“In Sam Hell, a young man who runs a Halloween spooky house finds what he believes to be an old movie prop at a yard sale, and decides to work it into his chilling attraction,” Bayouth tells Fango. “The grotesque decayed head in a cage turns out to be the real remains of a deranged mass murderer who begins to possess Sean, making him continue his bloody killing spree. When Sean’s girlfriend Jill realizes what’s happening, she enlists a pair of paranormal ass-kickers...

Matthew Barry began his Hollywood life as an actor, appearing in such films as The Wraith and Bernardo Bertolucci's Luna. These days he's a respected casting director who has worked with the likes of Jerry Bruckheimer, Tim Burton, and Nick Cassavetes. What, exactly, prompted the change in career tracks? "I was about to turn 30 years old, and I was bored," Barry says bluntly. "I was doing some really bad television, and I remember sitting on the set one day, going, 'There's got to be more to life than this.'" After a brief stint in the UCLA film program, the NewYork City native decided to ask director Barry Levinson for a job — any job. "I knew an associate of his who hooked me up," Barry recalls. "The production manager [on Levinson's film Toys] said, 'Well, we need some help in casting.' I started working with Ellen Chenoweth on that film and loved every minute of it.
