Plenty of attention is dedicated to the Best Musical race during Tony Awards season, but how confident are you in predicting the design categories? These four races consistently yield surprise winners each year. Those surprises have the potential to completely derail your score in our Tony prediction contest, even if you manage to guess all of the acting winners correctly.
So let’s take a deep dive into the tough below-the-line musical categories that you’ll need to ace in order to score top marks on your 2023 Tony Awards predictions.

There’s plenty of gorgeous scenic work in this category, but we can probably count out three contenders from the ultimate win. 59 Productions’ video design for “Camelot” is stunning, but Michael Yeargan’s minimal use of physical sets will keep it out of the running. There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

What’s a Camelot without a little magic?
Aaron Sorkin works up an answer to that question in the new Lincoln Center Theater production of the 1960 Lerner & Loewe musical, and the result is an adaptation that seems at every turn to be pleading its case for its own relevance. Where the West Wing creator conjured a real sort of writerly sorcery in 2018 with his transformation of the beloved property To Kill A Mockingbird into a new, relevant and thrilling stage work, his efforts this time around often seem strained in their attempts to drag Camelot into the 21st Century.
In its way, Camelot, at least as we’ve come to know it until now, is, in its stodgy and fitful way, a musical as emblematic of the 1960s as the more obvious generation-defining theatrical statements of the era (“Gimme a head with hair!”). Camelot, with its “might for right” social...

Why do we always remember the arguments? If there’s a family spat at the Thanksgiving table, it’ll be remembered long after grandma’s gravy recipe is lost to the ages.
Sharr White’s new play Pictures From Home drives that simple truth all the way home, and then makes so many return trips you imagine the ride could be made blindfolded. Given a loving production, the play opens tonight at Broadway’s Studio 54, with a trio of Broadway’s best – Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein, and Zoё Wanamaker – who couldn’t be more devoted to the sentimental memory play if it was about their own families. And Pictures From Home frequently pierces through its own nostalgia with an observation clear and crisp as a brand new Polaroid. Lots and lots of Polaroids.

Also at Lincoln Center, the Off Broadway production of Intimate Apparel in the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater begins previews Thursday, January 13, 2022, opening Thursday, January 27.
Both productions were in previews when New York’s theater shutdown hit in March 2020.

This past Broadway season included only three musical revivals — “Carousel,” “My Fair Lady” and “Once on this Island” — and they all received multiple Tony nominations. Two of them are new mountings of classics from the golden age while the third is a new take on a contemporary classic. Here’s what each of the three nominees for Best Musical Revival have going for them.

Plenty of attention is paid to the top races and acting categories at the Tony Awards. But if you are looking to do well in our prediction contest, you will also have to make smart decisions in the below-the-line categories as well. The four design categories often trip up Tony pundits, especially when there is no one show predicted to sweep. There is no single such juggernaut this season, which means upsets and surprises are likely. To provide some help with these tough categories, take a look at the analysis below before you make any final predictions.

While Carousel spins its gorgeous melodies and troublesome social politics in Midtown Manhattan, My Fair Lady, its lighter-hearted companion in the Big Book of treasured musicals toting outdated notions, has opened some 20 blocks north in a sumptuous Lincoln Center Theater production, its cast of 37 led by a tempestuous Lauren Ambrose and, in his Broadway debut, Harry Hadden-Paton, best known stateside for a Prince Charming turn on Downton Abbey but here making a right turn by going full-bore, unapologetic cad as that most arrogant of misogynists, Professor Henry Higgins.
In a parity not generally associated with this tale of young female molding in old male hands, the casting of the 40-year-old Ambrose and 37-year-old Hadden-Paton (even with some age make-up) makes for something of a My Fair Lady for the #MeToo moment. Even at the start, Ambrose is no withering little flower girl, nor Hadden-Paton the old-even-when-young Rex Harrison looming over his charge.

If you’ve got it, flaunt it. The splendid Beaumont stage at Lincoln Center was made for great classic musicals like Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady,” and helmer Bartlett Sher was born to stage them. This jubilant revival is meticulously mounted and entirely welcome – despite the eccentric casting choice of Lauren Ambrose as Eliza Doolittle.
Ambrose, a dramatic actress noted for her style and intelligence in shows like “Awake and Sing!” and “Exit the King” (not to mention her comic flair in “Six Feet Under”), does not leap to mind as the perfect Eliza. She doesn’t even leap to mind as the okay Eliza. It’s a triumph of acting that this non-singer manages to sing like a trouper. But the strain shows.
It comes as a happy shock to be reminded of what a great show this is. The Pygmalion story about romantic transformation is as...

I was in my local supermarket when Gwen Stefani came on the speakers:
If I was a rich girl (na, na) See, I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl No man could test me, impress me, my cash flow would never ever end 'Cause I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
And it made me wonder how many teenage music consumers around the world had any idea where that little tune came from. My conclusion? Not many.
Oh sure, Jewish kids, musical theater kids, maybe even most New York City kids. But that’s about it.

The sex is in the heel, indeed! The Harvey Fierstein-Cyndi Lauper musical Kinky Boots (based on the 2005 British film) dominated the Tony nominations, garnering 13 Tony nominations, including a best score nod for Lauper for her first-ever musical. The 2013 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and five-time nominated Broadway regular Sutton Foster.
The musical "Kinky Boots" nabbed the most nominations with a total of 13 Tony nods, making the fetish footwear-themed production this year's leading favorite. Its chief rival -- the kid-friendly "Matilda" -- followed close behind with a respectable 12. In the play category, the "Golden Boy" revival secured the highest number of mentions with a total of eight nominations, while Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" starring Tom Hanks earned six.
Big names in the acting nominations department included Hanks, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Cicely Tyson. Notably missing were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin, just a handful of celebrities who graced the Broadway stage this season but were snubbed when it came to the Tony announcements.

The Drama Desk Awards — commonly known as the theater world’s Golden Globes, though nominees are represented across all NYC productions in a season — are the last precursor to the Tony Awards (check EW.com tomorrow morning for a full list of those). And judging by the list below, it’s going to be quite a competitive year, with some pretty heavy-hitters mixed in with longshots, not to mention some major snubs (Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper, Fiona Shaw, Chaplin’s Rob McClure to name a few). The winners will be announced at NYC’s Town Hall on May 19. Below is...

There are many lovely aspects about "The Road to Mecca," yet the first must be to acknowledge its leading lady.
Rosemary Harris made her Broadway debut 60 years ago, an astounding milestone, even more so because she turns in a brilliant performance in the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Athol Fugard's play at American Airlines Theatre.
The limited engagement through March 4 focuses on two women coming to terms with their lives. Harris plays Miss Helen, an artist who lives in the remote outpost of New Bethesda, South Africa, a tiny village in the Karoo.
Carla Gugino ("Desire Under the Elms" on Broadway and "Karen Sisco" on TV) is wonderful as Helen's 31-year-old friend, Elsa. A teacher with a strong sense of justice and outrage, Elsa drives 12 hours straight from Cape Town, worried desperately about Helen, whose last letter hinted at suicide.
Helen lives alone with her art, in what is the most magnificent set.
