“Bosch” is back and as addictive as ever, showing why it’s Amazon’s oldest continuing original drama despite a call for new blood. As the streaming service is working hard to freshen its programming with big tentpoles like “Jack Ryan” or the upcoming “Good Omens” and “Lord of the Rings,” it always returns to the reliable, meticulous charms of Det. Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver).
In its fifth season, “Bosch” once again proves how delving into the everyday drudgery of police work and unspooling cases in an unhurried, unglamorous way can be even more effective than the splashier storytelling on its network counterparts. The series jumps forward about a year after the shocking events of Season 4, when Bosch witnesses his ex-wife Eleanor’s (Sarah Clarke) murder in a drive-by shooting. Grief and anger are mostly in the rearview as Bosch and his undergrad daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) are now...

All are benefiting from a ground-breaking deal which the Australian Directors Guild signed with the producers, ABC Studios and ABC Studios International.

The Bridge Season 2, Episode 5 “Eye of the Deep”
Written by Mauricio Katz
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
If there’s been a common theme among the main characters of The Bridge, it’s exploring the darker avenues of dealing with great loss. It occurs on both a human level, and with the larger plots at play: while Fausto and his organization scramble from the $70 million loss they just took on the other side of the border, characters like Adriana, Marco, and Sonya are dealing with the loss of family members, and Charlotte and Ray find themselves at a loss for freedom under Galvan’s violently oppressive thumb. And as all these plots begin to coalesce, “Eye of the Deep” reaches farther and deeper than the episodes before it to go out of it’s way painting a group of people reaching their wit’s...

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 3: “Quite a Common Fairy”
Written by Jane Espenson
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
The third episode of Once Upon a Time season three kicks off with another glimpse into the show’s very intriguing and yet creepy take on Peter Pan, before leading to a past Enchanted Forest storyline with Regina actually knowing Tinkerbell. Between the storyline in Neverland, the flashback with Tinkerbell, and Neal’s escapades with Mulan and Robin Hood, the entire episode feels very crammed together. The ride writer Jane Espenson takes us on goes down several different hills and turns, almost enough to make us sick.
Acting-wise, the episode is phenomenal as usual. The casting of Rose McIver as Tinkerbell is superb. McIver handles the different traits of Tinkerbell very well. In the past Enchanted Forest storyline we get to experience a more...

The Bridge, Season 1, Episode 10: “Old Friends”
Written by Patrick Somerville
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Est on FX
The reveal of ex-fbi agent David Tate as the mastermind behind the rash of cross-border crimes on this season of The Bridge brought the motivations behind the crimes into focus. What it didn’t bring into focus, however, was the machinations of Tate’s plan, nor did it bring Sonya and Marco any closer to capturing him. The effects of Tate’s actions on the police begin to show this week, as Marco and Sonya react differently to the strain Tate put on them, in a solid episode that manages to keep the tension high despite very little in the way of resolution.
Daniel’s road to sobriety and addiction recovery continues to be a fascinating aspect of the show. While most of the...

The Bridge, Season 1, Episode 6, “ID”
Written by Dario Scardapane
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm (Est) on FX
This week, on The Bridge: Bobby Cobb gets a name (and a few ideas), Sonya gets a backstory, and Gina gets the eyes right
The Bridge reached an intense season best last week with “The Beast”, so it’s not surprising that this week’s installment is somewhat of a tablesetter, reacting to the events just prior and paving the way for several new arcs that promise character and plot points aplenty. We spend plenty of time at the Peter Meadows crime scene, down to the apparently obligatory reminder of his Colombian necktie (sorry guys, Hannibal did it better), and afterward Sonya unsurprisingly proves a less than ideal interviewer of trauma victims as she questions Gina about her father’s murderer. Serious question- why does anyone, including her, think...

Hell on Wheels, Ep. 1.04: “Jamais Je Ne T’oublierai” continues to betray the audience’s intelligence
Hell on Wheels, Season 1, Episode 4: “Jamais Je Ne T’oublierai”
Written by Joe and Tony Gayton
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Airs Sundays at 10pm Et on AMC
Perhaps it is an inherent downfall to television. Could it be the viewer’s attention is more delicate, the makers of television shows lack the faith in the viewers, to simply let scenes breathe, and leave room for interpretation and nuance? I fear that it is becoming a lost art in television for shows to pare back clunky, expository dialogue, and let characters and moments unfold naturally.
I don’t like being so negative and laboring over the same points week after week, but we again were treated to an episode of television that is scene after scene of characters speaking at length to each other but saying very little. Hell on Wheels‘s insistence of reminding the viewer of who and...
