Plot: The surviving member of a family massacred by bandits tries to escape from the killers with her family’s horse.
Review: Studios and production companies will often try to get around marketing their horror releases as straightforward horror movies. This is how we get the term “elevated horror”. It’s a marketer’s way of trying to get across the idea that the horror movie they’re promoting isn’t your average horror movie. This is something special, a movie to be held up above that other trash called horror. Given this aversion to accepting the horror label, it’s surprising to see that Paramount has chosen to market director Michael Patrick Jann’s cleverly titled Organ Trail as a “Horror Western”… because by doing so, they have slapped the horror brand on a movie that I wouldn’t have considered to be a horror movie otherwise.

"Who are you running from!?" "Devil..." Paramount Movies has revealed the trailer for an indie western horror thriller titled Organ Trail – yes that title is a purposeful riff on the ol' Oregon Trail. Hopefully no one dies of dysentery watching this junk film... Abigale and her family fall victim to a ruthless gang while making their way across the Oregon Trail. As the only survivor, she will do whatever it takes to retrieve her one earthly possession, her family's horse, from the clutches of the bloodthirsty bandits. Oh yeah, bring it on! Take them down! If she can? Starring Zoé De Grand Maison, Nicholas Logan, Mather Zickel and Olivia Applegate, with Clé Bennett, Sam Trammell, and Jessica Frances Dukes. This seems like a mess of a genre film, with tons of tropes & twists thrown in for no good reason. Probably not worth a watch. // Continue Reading ›...

Last year, we heard the awesome news that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to a horror Western project with the brilliant title Organ Trail (inspired by the real life Oregon Trail, a wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon back in the 1800s). The film has since made its way through production, and while we still don’t know when exactly Paramount intends to release Organ Trail, it has taken an important step toward its release: it has secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association. Organ Trail has earned an R rating for “strong violence, language and some sexual references.”

Bones signs off on Tuesday, after 12 seasons of crime solving, evidence examining, blood, guts and, most importantly, bones. But at the core of the long-running Fox procedural -- the “heart of the matter,” if you will -- was a partnership between forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).
From their first episode together, Brennan and Booth’s dynamic was electric, and while the will-they-or-won’t-they of it all took nearly seven seasons to sort out (more if you count that they don’t actually tie the knot until season nine), their relationship kept fans hooked for all 245 episodes. We watched Brennan wrestle with her feelings as Booth looked for love, saw them lay it all on the line only to yank it back again, and finally, at long last, got to witness their happy ending. Two kids and countless hurdles later, they’re still going strong.

Welcome back to another episode of Nightmare Fuel, your weekly dose of horror here at HitFix. This week I chat with F This Movie! editor-in-chief and Daily Dead contributor Patrick Bromley about 10 Cloverfield Lane, director Dan Trachtenberg's Cloverfield quasi-sequel that has been racking up excellent reviews and no small amount of hype leading into the weekend -- the latter thanks in large part to an oh-so-secretive, very Jj Abrams-y marketing campaign. The question is, has the buzz raised expectations too high? (Psst, I've seen the movie and it is very good.) Moreover, do casual moviegoers understand this is a sequel in-name-only? Watch above or below as Patrick and I ponder the inevitable (?) 10Cl backlash, in addition to talking A&E's new Omen sequel series Damien and that puzzling last-minute release date shift for the millionth Amityville sequel Amityville: The Awakening. The only thing more terrifying than the last three minutes of this episode of Nightmare Fuel is the first seven! If you get that reference, you may well be a superfan of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic Suspiria. And even if you don't/aren't, you've likely at least heard of the film, a dreamlike, color-drenched, ultra-violent cult favorite that centers on some witchy happenings at a prestigious German dance academy. On this week's special in-studio edition of HitFix's new weekly horror series, HitFix chief film critic Drew McWeeny joins me to discuss Italian director Luca Guadagnino's planned remake of the film that's set to star none other than fierce, angular cinema icon Tilda Swinton (along with Dakota Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Matthias Schoenaerts) as well as two other forthcoming remakes/reboots/revivals: Jeremy Slater's TV pilot for The Exorcist (a "modern reinvention" of William Peter Blatty's novel) and Rabid,...

Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Radio Silence’s opener The Way Out really sets the tone for the rest of the film,...

Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Radio Silence’s opener The Way Out really sets the tone for the rest of the film,...

HitFix has a new weekly horror series, have you heard? It's called Nightmare Fuel, this is my second episode, and -- glory be to Black Phillip and all that is unholy -- my hair is exponentially better than it was on last week's show. On this week's episode I welcome Brad Miska -- co-founder and editor-in-chief of the web's No. 1 horror destination Bloody Disgusting as well as the producer of the popular V/H/S movie franchise -- to discuss The Witch backlash (was it overhyped?), the weird new Hellraiser sequel that Doug "Pinhead" Bradley couldn't have been less supportive of on Facebook (will fans ever accept another actor as the famed Cenobite?) and Brad's latest producorial effort, the impressive new horror anthology movie Southbound that's available on VOD and in limited theaters now. Watch the video above and below. More Nightmare Fuel: Episode #1: Horror Movie Anthologies, 'Southbound...

A spine-tingling welcome to the first episode of a little experiment I've cornily dubbed Nightmare Fuel, a new weekly HitFix chat series that will cover the latest news, gossip and trends in the horror biz. For my debut episode, on which I can be seen sporting some of the worst hair in all of human history, I welcome Southbound co-writer/director David Bruckner and star Mather Zickel, who plays a very unfortunate commuter in Bruckner's segment of the new horror anthology that features five interlocking stories all set on the same desolate stretch of highway. During our wide-ranging convo, we discuss the duo's solid new film (out now on various streaming platforms and in limited theaters), why major studios stopped backing horror anthologies after their '80s heyday despite the surging popularity of the format in the "indie" market, and what happened with Bruckner's abandoned, Dazed and Confused-style version...

There are few things in the film world more difficult to successfully cobble together than the dreaded horror anthology. With its mixture of narratives, creative voices and actors/actresses, more often than not the horror anthology picture feels closer akin to the type of short film programs many people are flocking to this Oscar season than a fully formed, singular motion picture. For every great one like Trick r’ Treat or Three Extremes there’s a complete dud like the dreadful ABC’s Of Death or the unwatchable Little Deaths. A tough balance to strike between genuine terror and shifting creative visions, the success stories seem to be the exception to the lesser picture’s rule.
That’s what makes the latest attempt at mastering this concept, Southbound, so special. Four directors are accounted for here, including Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath and the runaway stars of this show...

For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines, Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop. From the minds of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and the Radio Silence collective come five tales of open-road horror set to the soothing voice of Larry Fessenden’s DJ narration, and the ride is surly a worthy one. The segments rarely skip a beat, and showcase the same drifting intrigue that’s created by a desolate stretch of highway that connects them all. Nothing good ever happens in the middle of nowhere, but this series of gleefully unfortunate events tends to argue otherwise with the help of some gruesome tricks, brainwashed minds, and a few skeletal demons worth a fright.

A review of tonight's "Masters of Sex" coming up just as soon as I have an appointment with a travel agent... As I said last week, I'm going to tinker with the format of the weekly reviews for this show, since some weeks I have an essay in me, while others I just have a bunch of random observations. This is one of the latter, so let's hit it: * On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter ran an interview with Michelle Ashford discussing, among other things, the new disclaimer at the end of each episode about the TV show's kids being wholly fictional. She's not allowed to discuss much, but said that "certain things that had to be done in our storytelling that had to do with legal issues." On the family front, this episode gets even deeper into fictionalizing things, since Virginia didn't have a third, late-in-life child, nor did she...

Dramas about real people are not documentaries, and can't be held to the same standards. The demands of one form are different than the other's. By necessity, events and people need to be compressed, or tweaked, if not wholly invented at times, to serve the storyteller's needs. Ideally, you get a story that captures the spirit of the real person, even if the details aren't quite right. But there's still a reason writers choose a real person as their subject rather than simply making up everything out of whole cloth. A fictionalized account has to deviate from the historical record to a degree, but there comes a time where there are so many changes as to make the whole thing seem pointless. Showtime's "Masters of Sex" has never presented itself as a wholly factual account of the lives and careers of pioneering sex researchers William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson...

Recently, Fox released the new, official synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming "Bones" episode 10 of season 10. The episode is entitled, "The 200th in the 10th," and it turns out that this one will be a weird, filler episode as the Jeffersonian and FBI crew reimagines some old Alfred Hitchcock stuff set in 1950's Hollywood, and more. In the new, 10th episode press release: Bones is going to pay homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Press release number 2: Bones will pay homage to Alfred Hitchcock in an episode that reimagines the Jeffersonian and FBI teams in 1950s Hollywood. Brennan is going to play an Lapd detective who's battling sexism on the force, and Booth is a notorious jewel thief who is far more than he seems to be. When Booth is framed for the murder of a rich socialite, he and Brennan team up to clear his name and find the true identity of the murderer.

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "Bad Judge" (NBC) The Pitch: From the title/narrative construction that brought you "Bad Santa" and "Bad Teacher" comes... "Bad Judge"! Quick Response: NBC's "Bad Judge" is the last Take Me To The Pilots entry for a show premiering this fall on a major network. I've saved it until the end for two good reasons: 1) As the title accurately teases, it's bad. 2) I'm reasonably sure that the pilot sent to critics in May isn't going to be the pilot that's going to air on NBC this fall. I think NBC liked the idea of doing a show with Kate Walsh and they liked the idea of ordering two pilots produced by Will Ferrell and they liked that the title is an easy sell. So Liz Brixius has been brought in to run the show and two major roles have been recast and another role is being pushed from the...

Just keeping busy before its big schedule announcement on Sunday, NBC picked up a trio of comedies on Friday afternoon, including two from executive producer Will Ferrell. The "Anchorman" star and "Anchorman" director Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions is behind "Bad Judge" and "Mission Control," which will be joined by "One Big Happy" on NBC's slate for next season. Elementary, Season 2: Episode 18 – “The Hound of the Cancer Cells”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by Michael Slovis
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
After a few fairly by-the-numbers entries of Elementary in the past weeks, “The Hound of the Cancer Cells” grounds the detective series back into the sphere in which it usually excels: character. Even with a guest turn from character actor Mather Zickel, the main crime plot is lacking in terms of drawing the viewer into something that she ought to care about. That might sound like a harsh criticism given that Elementary is essentially a police procedural, but a lacking crime plot doesn’t have to be an obstacle. Nor does it have to be the A-story of a given episode. “The Hound of the Cancer Cells” makes good on that by bringing two different character-based issues part of its concern.
Both, actually, revolve around Detective Bell.

TVLine has the scoop on the proposed Supernatural spin-off. The series will follow a new hunter who comes to realize that Chicago is under the control of five monster families and the tensions from their attempts to consolidate power while maintaining the peace. I have to admit, that sounds a lot soapier than I’d expect out of a Supernatural spin-off.
When Adult Swim’s fake news show Newsreaders returns for its second season, it will feature a new host — Alan Tudyk. I’ll miss (previous Newsreaders host) Mather Zickel but Alan Tudyk getting a chance to be goofy is generally a good thing.
Too bad “goody and naked” isn’t likely on a fake news show.
The Newsroom and Smash alum Grace Gummer has joined the cast of CBS’ summer series Extant. The series stars Halle Berry as Molly, an astronaut who returns from earth after a long mission in space.

It's real -- after more than eight seasons, Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) are finally getting married on "Bones." Wedding photos from "The Woman in White" make it look like the event will indeed happen as planned too.
This is a very good thing.
Of course, before any wedding can happen on a show like "Bones," the team has to solve a gruesome murder.
There's also a bit of drama when Booth finds a duffle bag stuffed with cash. Why does Max (Ryan O'Neal) have something like that?
At least Booth has Aldo Clemens (Mather Zickel) to counsel him these days.
They brought Parker (Ty Panitz) back for the wedding! He's getting so big!
Angela (Michaela Conlin) is of course the maid of honor.

"Bones" Season 9 dives right into the relationship drama and icky murder in the premiere. Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) may still be together -- but love is on the rocks, thanks to the nefarious interference of Christopher Pelant last season.
Can love survive? Can murder disgust us even more? All questions from "The Secret in the Proposal" are revealed here.
The trials of love
Booth shares his troubles with a heretofore unmentioned ex-military friend named Aldo (guest star Mather Zickel). Aldo, it seems, was once a military chaplain and Booth's confessor. That was before Booth confessed to killing lots of people, making Aldo not like God so much.
Instead of being a priest, Aldo now runs a bar. Considering how empty the bar seems to be every time we see it in the episode, the fellow might want to consider a return to his earlier calling.

When "Bones" Season 9 returns with new episodes, Booth and Brennan may not be in the best place, romantically. Booth did, after all, break off their engagement on the orders of serial killer Christopher Pelant.
But at least the couple will be getting together soon. A wedding is expected sooner rather than later, and spoilers indicate that it is going to be an impressive affair.
The Priest
Does having a real spouse attend a TV wedding make the ceremony more comfortable or more awkward? Fans of "Bones" will soon have an answer to that: Emily Deschanel's real husband, David Hornsby ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), will be at the wedding. He may even be the priest that marries Booth and Brennan after all these years.

The "Bones" Season 9 premiere, "The Secrets in the Proposal," won't air until Monday, Sept. 16. For this reason, you need some spoilers now. Here are 9 of the best from the upcoming premiere episode.
First of all, a brief review of what happened at the end of Season 8: As Booth (David Boreanaz) had predicted a long time ago, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) did indeed propose to him. Pelant (Andrew Leeds) unfortunately got involved, and Booth was forced to turn her down.
The hunt for that bad man continues.
