Early in HBO’s Swedish-language adaptation “Beartown,” two people are running desperately through the snow. One is carrying a rifle, and the other is doing their best to avoid getting shot. Their faces are obscured, any telling identification avoided, but the chase ends with the hunter and prey isolated on a frozen lake, the latter kneeling in front of the former, before the image cuts to black just before a shot rings out.
Considering the audience learns both identities before the end of the second episode, this intense introductory scene isn’t meant to tease a mystery. “Beartown” is a blunt story, stocked with direct lessons. Still, it’s patient about revealing its thesis, and the life-or-death stakes set up from the get-go help to prepare the audience for when normal life in a small Swedish town turns very, very ugly. For a while, it may seem like “Beartown” will...

Joona Linna (Tobias Zilliacus) is a Swedish Cid officer investigating the murder of a gym teacher and his family. With no DNA or fingerprints, his only witness is the youngest child of the family, Josef (Jonatan Bökman), and he’s currently comatose and seriously wounded. Josef’s doctor, Daniella (Helena af Sandeberg), suggests using disgraced doctor/hypnotist Erik Bark (Mikael Persbrandt) to tap into Josef’s subconscious and find out what he saw. Reluctantly, Erik agrees, but soon finds his family the target as well, and the case becomes darker and more urgent.

From celebrated director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen) comes The Hypnotist, a new tense and brutal crime thriller based on the best-selling novel by Lars Kepler. A must-see for fans of The Killing and Scandinavian book-to-film adaptations by authors such as Jo Nesbø (Headhunters) and Stieg Larsson (The Millenium Trilogy).
In the middle of a dark December night, psychiatrist Erik Maria Bark (Mikael Persbrandt) is woken by a telephone call from a hospital in Stockholm. Detective Inspector Joona Linna (Tobias Zilliacus) asks for his immediate help in treating an unconscious patient suffering from acute trauma. He hopes that Erik will be able to communicate with the young boy through hypnosis, enabling the police to question him. They intend to find out who so brutally murdered his parents and younger sister, in order to track down and save his mysteriously missing older sister before it is too late.

Director Lasse Hallstrom brings us an intriguing drama with flashes of bloodshed but little satisfaction. Here's Aliya's DVD review...
Lasse Hallstrom is a director who brings a sharp eye to personal relationships. For instance, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and Chocolat (2000) are both films that take their time to investigate a family dynamic, building to a feeling of intimacy, and you get much the same kind of feeling in the best moments of his latest film, The Hypnotist. Unfortunately this emotional element is muddied by a plot that never quite ties up and a few characters who aren’t afforded the same kind of room to develop.
The film is based on the novel of the same name, written by a Swedish husband and wife team under the pseudonym Lars Kepler, and it contains every element you would expect from a Scandinavian crime drama, including snowscapes and jumpers and the...

Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough will star in Safe Haven, the latest Nicholas Sparks novel to be turned into a movie. Lasse Hallström, Oscar nominated for My Life As a Dog and The Cider House Rules, has been assigned to direct the romantic drama for Relativity Media. Safe Haven revolves around a young woman (Julianne Hough) who becomes the talk to the (small North Carolina) town after she becomes much too intimate with a widowed father (Josh Duhamel). Filming should commence in July. For the time being, the Safe Haven release date is a Valentine’s Day-friendly Feb. 8, 2013. Nicholas Sparks movie adaptations aren’t expensive to make, and they’re reliable box-office performers in North America — though considerably less so overseas. The current big screen adaptation of a Sparks novel is the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic melodrama The Lucky One, which has collected $58.49m in North America, in addition to $29.4m internationally,...

The film "is the first in a planned series of eight Joona Linna novels from Lars Kepler – a pseudonym for Swedish husband and wife authors Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril. The third novel in the series was recently published in Sweden.
Lasse Hallstrom's The Hypnotist stars Mikael Persbrandt (The Hobbit), Lena Olin (The Ninth Gate, Chocolat) and Tobias Zilliacus (Iris).
In the movie Persbrandt plays Detective Linna, who "investigates a grisly triple homicide where the only survivor, a young boy, is too traumatized to testify. Linna convinces a famous psychologist, against his better judgment, to hypnotize the boy, setting off a terrifying chain of events."
