Robert Butler, the Emmy-winning, go-to pilot director who helmed the first episodes of such acclaimed shows as Batman, Star Trek, Hill Street Blues and Moonlighting, died Nov. 3 in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 95.
Butler also co-created the Pierce Brosnan-starring Remington Steele (and helmed its pilot, of course), directed the first episode of Hogan’s Heroes in 1965, and called the first shots and set the tone for, Glenn Gordon Caron’s Moonlighting, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Sisters and The Division.
In 1973, he directed the William Holden-starring The Blue Knight — the first four-hour television miniseries — at NBC and then got the CBS series adaptation of the Joseph Wambaugh novel that starred George Kennedy off on the right foot.
Butler also helmed two episodes of The Twilight Zone (the fifth-season installments “Caesar and Me,” starring his old friend, Jackie Cooper, and “The Encounter”) and worked on The Dick Van Dyke Show,...

Rissien died April 8 of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, his nephew, Emmy-nominated director Michael Zinberg (The Bob Newhart Show, The Good Wife, NCIS), told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Eddie was a well-respected man who had beautiful taste in material,” Zinberg said. “He was always looking for something that would make a difference.”
An Iowa native who started out as a stage manager on Broadway, Rissien helped set up Harry Belafonte‘s HarBel Productions after acquiring the film rights for Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), the Robert Wise-directed drama that starred Belafonte, Robert Ryan and Shelley Winters.

The Good Wife, Season 6, Episode 16: “Red Meat”
Written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on CBS
After sixteen episodes of build, the day has finally come, and the fictional voters of The Good Wife’s bizarro Illinois have spoken. It’s a foregone conclusion the moment that Alicia says that she’s “relieved” to be behind in the first exit polls: Alicia wins, aided by some last-minute dirty manoeuvring by Peter. While the State’s Attorney run hasn’t made for the most riveting stretch of the series by any means, its conclusion at least underlines that Alicia will no longer be able to rationalize herself as “the good guy,” and perhaps in the letting go, she can find an acceptable way forward. She’ll never be Frank Prady – a man so principled that he can’t even bring himself to work for Alicia,...

Plot:
Shield and Hydra fight for control of the temple, while Skye comes face to face with her Father.
Verdict:
So after what has been a very strong opening half of it’s second season, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shows no signs of slowing down as it reveals that the Inhumans are a part of the McU (though everyone had pretty much guessed it before this point, that’s the Age of the Internet for you). And ’What We Become’ was an excellent continuation of ’Ye Who Enter Here’ as it answered the questions that had been building up since the start of the season, while also laying down the foundations for it’s second half.
After a season and a half, it is really good to see that S.H.I.E.L.D. now has super-powered team member in their ranks...

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 10: “What They Become”
Written by Jeffrey Bell
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
Warning: This review contains major spoilers this episode of Agents of Shield.
In season one, the midseason finale of Agents of Shield, “The Bridge,”, was a lackluster, frustrating cliffhanger, an episode with very little guts and the nerve to pretend like the season thus far was building up to that point. In season two, Agents of Shield shows just how much has changed with its midseason finale, “What They Become.” Nearly everything set up gets a proper payoff, and the action hardly slows down, except for a few brief moments between Skye and her father. A character thought dead in “Ye Who Enter Here” is revealed to be alive, but the celebration is short-lived, as another beloved member of the team is killed off in a brutally fast,...

The Good Wife, Season 6, Episode 9: “Sticky Content”
Written by Robert King and Michelle King
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on CBS
As with “Oppo Research” a few weeks back, “Sticky Content” comes to us with a teleplay credit that always elicits a raised eyebrow from yours truly: it’s time for the Kings. (In recent seasons, they’ve tended to be credited with writing or co-writing eight episodes per season.) While the former episode brought ample sass and style but came up a little short on substance, “Sticky Content” is content to more quietly deal with some considerably weightier subject matter. This is a subtly important episode, even if not all of the details are note-perfect.
I bring up the Kings and their writing credits not just as an excuse for geekery, but because this level of creator authorship is rare on a network drama,...

The Blacklist, Season 1, Episode 21: “Berlin”
Written by John Eisendrath & Jon Bokenkamp
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Airs Monday nights at 10 pm Est on NBC
The one major strength about The Blacklist is the secret information Red Reddington is holding in, and while his secret is still hidden, the tension that the show produces by making Red the target of this week’s Blacklister is among the most compelling on television this week.
One of the major highlights of this episode is watching the guard succumb to the illness he has been injected with. Practical make up effects really sell the intense agony this person is experiencing. The idea that the bank he is delivering to is contaminated and that he could’ve possibly infected other people undoubtedly made many viewers squeamish in their seats. The other interesting part of that plotline is Liz’s interview with Dr. Nickolas Vogel. His...

The Blacklist, Season 1, Episode 14: “Madeline Pratt”
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Written by Jim Compolongo
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on NBC
Constant negativity and pessimism is seldom a good thing. Even in the worst that the world has to offer, there’s a sliver of something well done or praiseworthy or, at least, not outright terrible. That’s where The Blacklist comes in. It’s not a completely terrible show. If it was, writing these reviews would be much easier. The fact of the matter is its quality is incredibly nuanced and is hardly ever constant. Sometimes it’s up and others it’s agressively down. It’s a show that few would hesitate to define as “bad”, but its positive moments still abound, perhaps not plentiful, but enough for notice.
Perhaps the most interesting, and disappointingly unexplored, aspect to “Madeline Pratt” is the revelation/tease that Keen (Megan Boone...

The game’s afoot this week as Lockhart/Gardner and Florrick/Agos actively compete over a case, Marilyn Garbanza trails Peter’s ethical lapses, and Will works to undermine a potential partnership deal for the firm that walked out from under him. “The Next Day” plays out the early days of the aftermath from “Hitting the Fan” and while it is extremely effective at depicting the next steps, it is often clear this is an episode more committed to establishing a new status quo than one that has an agenda all its own.
There are things that are to be expected in the fall out of last week. Will has a new, young girlfriend with whom he can sex away his feelings (though, honestly, I am...

The Good Wife, Season 5, Episode 2: “The Bit Bucket”
Written by Robert King and Ted Humphrey
Directed by Michael Zinberg
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on CBS
Only The Good Wife could take on the Nsa with the near perfect mixture of dread and whimsy it manages in “The Bit Bucket.” It was inevitable the show would tackle the newly revealed reach of the National Security Agency this season—it is a perfect collection of so many of the show’s predilections. It heavily involves technology, casts a suspicious eye towards bureaucracy, hints at levels of apathy and corruption in the government, and allows the show to strut its quirky legal knowledge like the peacock it can be at its most ostentatious.
Opening with a zippy, funny sequence that follows two Nsa trackers (Zach Woods and Tobias Segal), the episode spins out to pull in various disparate threads from the...

John Badham, director of film favorites such as “Saturday Night Fever,” “Wargames” and “Stakeout,” over a dozen other films and many more television shows, is coming out with a new book entitled, no surprises here, “John Badham on Directing.” Now a lot of “how to” books have crossed my desk, but this is something special for several reasons. One, he has reached out to other directors such as Martha Coolidge, Christopher Nolan, Paris Barkley, Oliver Stone and Steven Soderbergh (and a couple who are no longer with us such as John Frankenheimer and Sydney Pollack) for their stories, suggestions and insights.
It’s like being in a master class on directing from the best in the business, along with commentary from actors, cinematographers and producers. It covers everything from what you want out of storyboarding,
strategies behind effective action scenes and, most of all, getting the best possible performances from actors.

After many years of Guild service, Ed Sherin, who was named DGA Honorary Life Member at Saturday’s DGA Awards, announced that he was resigning his seat on the National Board.
