Colin Farrell reprises his role as The Penguin, and it’s now confirmed that Sky will broadcast the series in the UK.
Spoilers for The Batman lie ahead.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was among the top ten highest grossing films of 2022, the superhero epic expanding on the darker tone previously established in the Christopher Nolan trilogy while sticking more closely to the comics. One of its most striking performances was a near unrecognisable Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
It wasn’t long before HBO Max began developing a spin-off centering around the character, which will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled to begin filming in 2025 for release in 2026.
Little is known about the plot of the series, although Farrell recently called it “incredibly violent“. The story will follow Oswald Copplebolt (aka The Penguin) and his rise to power. Farrell said...

We didn't initially pay a huge amount of attention to rumours that Mark Strong had been cast in The Penguin in a mystery role, but his trainer has now let the cat bat out of the bag in a series of Instagram posts.
Giacomo Farci was asked if it's true he worked on The Batman follow-up, promoting him to reply, "Yes, I've trained Mark for it." Asked if he could reveal who the Shazam! star is playing, Farci said, "I cannot answer to this question but I'm sure you will figure it out."
Needless to say, we're guessing he won't be reprising his role as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a villain whose story ended on a largely unsatisfying note thanks to an unresolved cliffhanger in both the first movie and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
So, who has Strong been cast as in The Penguin?

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

There are a bunch of DC projects coming up. Everyone’s excited about James Gunn’s DC Universe and his new ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman.’ But don’t forget about the Elseworlds projects, like ‘The Batman’ movie series, and other projects in the works like the upcoming ‘The Penguin’ show.
Last week, they dropped a teaser for ‘The Penguin’. It takes place a week after ‘The Batman’ and it’s all about Cobblepot making his way up in Gotham. Colin Farrell is coming back as ‘The Penguin’ – he got a lot of love for that role. In a recent interview, Farrell talked about what fans can expect from the show, and it doesn’t sound too pretty.
We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it about two weeks ago. It was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it.

The sequel to the 2022 superhero hit “The Batman” may have been pushed to 2026, but fans of Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham City will have “The Penguin” to tide them over later this year.
On Friday, Max released a new trailer for the DC Studios limited series starring Colin Farrell as mobster Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin. Farrell’s Penguin was a supporting character in “The Batman” (and one of its best parts), but he gets center stage here as he tries to grab power in Gotham’s underworld after the death of his boss, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), in “The Batman.”
With Farrell again unrecognizable under layers of prosthetic makeup, Cobb tells a story about Rex Calabrese, a gangster who ran his neighborhood when he was a kid. Calabrese earned people’s respect by helping them out, and when he died, the neighborhood threw a parade in his honor. “Can you imagine,...

The Penguin is ready to take the big seat. Colin Farrell is back as The Penguin in the new trailer for his Max series, which spins out of the world of the 2022 DC film The Batman.
In the events of the film, The Penguin served as a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who meets an untimely end. Now, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City in a series that looks like DC’s answer to The Sopranos.
The series hails from DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division run by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are plotting out their own shared universe of movies and TV shows. Both The Batman and The Penguin are considered separate from those plans, and take place in their own universe under the Elseworlds banner — a nod to alternate universe stories in the DC Comics.

The bat is nowhere to be seen in the latest trailer for “The Penguin,” but that doesn’t mean that Gotham City crime is running rampant…yet.
Max’s “Batman” spinoff “The Penguin” is produced by “The Batman” writer/director Matt Reeves, with Dylan Clark executive producing. Colin Farrell reprises his role of corrupt nightclub owner Oz Cobb from Reeves’ 2022 feature starring Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero.
Following the events of the film which saw most of Oswald’s gang members either killed or incarcerated, Oswald is climbing the ranks in underground organized crime. The cast is rounded out by Cristin Milioti, who portrays Sofia, daughter of John Turturro’s mafia boss Carmine Falcone, and Theo Rossi, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Holmes. Clancy Brown is believed to be playing Gotham City mafia head Sal Maroni, who was formerly...

Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.
“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.
“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

Holy release date shift, Batman! Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 is sticking to the shadows a bit longer after moving from its October 3, 2025 release date to October 2, 2026! If you’re looking to throw a batarang at the culprit, aim for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
While this news is disappointing, the shift gives James Gunn’s Superman film room to leap over the box office in a single bound when it flies into theaters on July 11, 2025. Double-dipping on two of DC’s Trinity heroes would have been nice, but spacing them out is likely better in the long run. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is not a part of Gunn and Safran’s “Gods and Monsters” initiative, but it’s all the same for plenty of audience members. Not everyone keeps their finger on the pulse of how the Dcu is structured.

Whether you loved The Batman (2022) or thought it was overhyped, it's hard to find anyone who didn't at least enjoy Colin Farrell's unique take on the Penguin.
So, when it came time to pitch a spin-off, Farrell's scene-stealing crime boss seemed the natural choice. He steals your attention anytime he's on the screen, and who doesn't love an epic crime drama?
Details on the new TV series following Oswald Cobblepot are scant at present, but we've managed to dig up a bit of info to whet the appetite.
Has The Penguin Been Greenlit?
Yes, The Penguin is in post-production as of the time of this writing, so go ahead and get excited. This isn't one of those things they announce, and then everyone forgets about it; it's actually happening.
Filming has already wrapped, and now it's simply a matter of waiting for the release date.
How Did The Batman End?...

Margot Robbie almost immediately achieved A-list status after being cast in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. But after doing the Oscar-winning feature, she made sure her next film role couldn’t have been any more different.

Robbie hit a big breakthrough by portraying Naomi in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. But with how memorable the part became, she was weary of being typecast for similar roles. One of the reasons she started her production company was to maintain variety in her career.

Robert Pattinson, one of the most talented English actors, embarked on his acting journey when he was 15. After playing supporting roles in the German made-for-television film Ring of the Nibelungs in 2004 and Mira Nair’s costume drama Vanity Fair, he landed the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005.
The role of Cedric Diggory helped Robert Pattinson earn recognition in the industry. Then came his portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, based on Stephenie Meyer’s eponymous novel series. Although this role gained him worldwide recognition, the actor is not very fond of it. In 2022, he finally got the chance to portray the DC Comics superhero Batman and might be reprising his role sooner than fans had expected.

‘…who became a disfigured crime lord and the former chief lieutenant of crime boss 'Carmine Falcone' …

Production on Max’s DC spinoff was shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which started on July 14 and lasted 118 days.
HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys told reporters during an event earlier this month that the series is expected to premiere next year, despite the delays around the project.
The eight-episode series, which picks up after the conclusion of feature superhero reboot “The Batman,” will explore how Oswald Cobblepot rose to power to become the iconic villian.
In addition to Farrell, the previously announced cast includes Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O’Connell, with Clancy Brown and Michael Zegen recurring.

The union strike from the Writer’s Guild of America continues, and studios are about to really hit a wall if a strike from the Screen Actor’s Guild goes into effect. However, there are many films and TV shows that are experiencing production delays as Hollywood hopes for an agreement to be met. Some projects barely squeaked by, like James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, but the newest reported projects that have been delayed are the Disney+ revival of the Marvel Studio’s show Daredevil: Born Again and Warner Bros’ HBO The Batman spin-off, Penguin.

Sometimes, superheroes just can’t power through a challenging situation. Marvel and Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again and DC/Max collaboration Penguin are shutting down for the duration of the writers strike, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Filming for Matt Reeves’s The Batman Part II is delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. While the AMPTP drags its feet on negotiating with writers for issues including fair pay, filming for The Batman Part II will take place next year instead of later this year in London. While the delay is unfortunate, better conditions and terms for the individuals who craft Hollywood’s stories are overdue. One of the reasons The Batman Part II will be delayed is because the film’s director, Matt Reeves, is also writing the sequel alongside Mattson Tomlin. Both creatives are involved in the strike, showing solidarity with their fellow writers and filmmakers.
Midgard Times says cameras will roll on The Batman Part II in March 2024. Thankfully, the delay should not affect the sequel’s release date of October 3, 2025.

Regarding villains terrorizing Gotham, few rule the streets with the creep factor of the Penguin. The stout, bird-like baddie is a tortured soul. In Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, Danny DeVito played the character akin to a rejected circus freak with abandonment issues and an axe to grind. In Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Colin Farrell taps into Penguin’s aspirations to rule Gotham with an iron fist, controlling who lives, who dies, and who patrols the alleyways. Devito and Farrell’s versions are wildly different. Still, they both crave control over Gothamites, while Batman looms like a shadow over their wicked dreams. As a part of this week’s Just for Variety, the outlet caught up with DeVito, who commented on whether he’ll play the Penguin again and what he thinks of Farrell’s version of Batman’s avian adversary.
According to DeVito, he has no plans to play the Penguin again.
