“CSI: Vegas” may be canceled, but CBS isn’t giving up on the franchise. The Eye network announced Tuesday a new edition in the “CSI” universe — but this time in the unscripted space.
CBS has ordered the unscripted, true-crime docuseries “The Real CSI: Miami” based on the drama “CSI: Miami,” which aired from 2002 to 2012 (for 10 seasons and 232 episodes). The new series is set to release on CBS on June 26 at 10 p.m. Et. The news came as CBS announced its summer lineup.
The logline for “The Real CSI: Miami” reads, “Each episode features gripping real-life crime cases and the cutting-edge forensic science used to solve them. ‘The Real CSI: Miami’ highlights that at the heart of every story is a victim and a family seeking justice.”
The news of another “CSI” show being ordered comes after the last show in the franchise “CSI: Vegas” announced its cancellation in April after three seasons.

The CSI franchise’s return to CBS is coming to an end as CBS on Friday opted not to renew CSI: Vegas for a fourth season.
On Saturday, CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows for 14 seasons across the original series and the followup, reflected on the cancellation.
“Each & every person involved with the making of this series brought their A game each & every day,” Helgenberger wrote on Instagram next to an on-set photo of the cast. “It was truly a pleasure & honor to work/play alongside such a fun & talented company of story tellers. Immeasurable thanks & gratitude to all for making this experience such a memorable ride. And to all the fans; we did it all for you.”
Lex Medlin, who, like Helgenberger, joined CSI: Vegas as a series regular in Season 2, posted a similar behind-the-scenes cast photo on Ig with a note to fans about the cancellation.

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.
In most current linear Nielsen viewership (2/12 to date), CSI: Vegas, which improved its time period, is at #21 among all non-sports broadcast programs with 6.234M viewers and So Help Me Todd at #22 with 6.224M. That is more...

Exclusive: Anthony E. Zuiker, the creator of the hugely successful CSI TV franchise, has signed with boutique management firm Literate.
This marks a rare new addition to Zuiker’s close-knit representation team, nicknamed affectionately by the writer-producer “Team Zuiker,” who has been shaping his career and brand for more than two decades.
It follows the January death of Zuiker’s beloved manager of over 25 years, Margaret Riley, most recently of Lighthouse Entertainment, who passed away from cancer at the age of 58.
In a moving tribute for Deadline at the time, Zuiker recalled how Riley signed Zuiker on his 30th birthday, 8/17/1998, when he was still trying to break into Hollywood. Helping him land early writing gigs that led to CSI, Riley also took Zuiker to the talent agencies, with him landing at CAA with Joe Cohen, and introduced him to entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. There are few talent-representative partnerships in Hollywood that have lasted a career. CSI creator Anthony Zuiker had that with manager Margaret Riley, most recently a partner at Lighthouse Entertainment, who died Tuesday of ovarian cancer at age 58.
In 1998, Zuiker was working as a tram driver in his native Las Vegas while trying unsuccessfully to make it as a screenwriter with a movie script he had written, The Runner. Producer Jim Garavente slipped it to Riley, who had recently been promoted from assistant to manager at management/production company Addis Wechsler, and she signed Zuiker on his 30th birthday, 8/17/1998.
Riley then took Zuiker to all Hollywood agencies. He ended up at CAA (where he still is a client) with Joe Cohen and Scott Greenberg. Riley also introduced him to Kevin Yorn, who repped him for free for an year until he got his footing.

CSI: Vegas had some big shoes to fill since the spin-off started in 2021 because the original series was a fan-favorite and ran for 15 seasons.
CSI: Vegas Season 1 focused on establishing the team and ridding the team of the scandal that Hodges was accused of. They needed Grissom and Sara’s expertise to do that.
During CSI: Vegas Season 2, they brought Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) back to have another legacy character to entice long-time characters. Catherine interacted with more of the newer characters on a variety of cases, but she was gone for a few episodes at a time, which would disrupt the flow of her stories.
The season had its ups and downs as it struggled to find a mystery viewers cared about. Instead, the series excelled by featuring character-centric storylines or episodes that expanded on each character’s personality and family.

The fans. I really missed the character, and when the show started, many fans asked where I was. The more time that went on, I felt I needed to do this.
What kind of story did they pitch to get you to return?

The fans. I really missed the character, and when the show started, many fans asked where I was. The more time that went on, I felt I needed to do this.
What kind of story did they pitch to get you to return?
There was no pitch. I got the script and discovered what I would be doing and what little bits of information they were given about where Greg had been.
So where has Greg been?
I like to think that...

If you thought that CBS’ CSI: Vegas was done with Greg Sanders so soon, rest assured that there is more of CSI vet Eric Szmanda to come.
Szmanda — who has more than 330 episodes of the Og CSI under his belt — marked his return to the franchise amidst the emotionally charged March 30 episode that guest-starred Regina Taylor. But Greg will be seen at least two more times, in the episodes airing this Thursday, April 13 (in which the team investigates a bomb that detonated at a masquerade party for wealthy casino investors) and then May 4.

Did you cry? CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17 was one the most emotional episodes of the franchise as Max Roby discovers the body of a young girl who was murdered 40 years ago and promises the skeptical mom justice.
TV Fanatic had the pleasure of talking to CSI Franchise creator Anthony Zuiker, actress Paula Newsome, and guest-star Regina Taylor about the emotional moments of this Emmy-worthy episode and the deleted scenes.
I had so much fun chatting with the three of them. Check out the interview below:
So, Anthony, what inspired you to write this episode featuring both of these talented women?
Anthony: Well, once upon a time this season, I wrote a show called Koala that you wrote about earlier. Then Paula Newsome pulled me aside and said I want my Koala.
I went to Austin, Texas, for five days, watched Karen Taylor's' masterclass on facial reconstruction, and brought that tactical science back to the show.

The best episodes of CSI are the ones where the criminologists get emotionally involved in the case.
That was certainly the case on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17, written by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker.
As the mother of an only child, Maxine couldn't help but get pulled into solving this 41-year-old murder.
The storyline was timely, as, thanks to global climate change, bodies of water are starting to give up their dead.
What a perfect opportunity to tackle a cold case!
But if the victim had been just another Vegas thug, it wouldn't have resonated like finding a young Jane Doe in a barrel. The mob has long taken advantage of the Nevada environment for stashing bodies.
The CSIs can toil in obscurity when investigating many of their cases. The public often doesn't care.
But the media ran with this discovery of a body in a barrel. So there was added...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 17, “The Promise.”] “I want me a ‘Koala’!” Paula Newsome told franchise creator Anthony Zuiker (referring to the Marg Helgenberger-centric episode earlier this season), and she got it with the latest CSI: Vegas. When a young girl’s remains are found 40 years after her murder, her mother (Regina Taylor) doesn’t exactly trust the cops … until Max proves she can. Zuiker, who co-wrote the episode (with Alex Berry), and Newsome take us inside the powerful hour. Anthony, why did you want to tell this story? Anthony Zuiker: One of my goals this season was to write two big solos, one for Marg Helgenberger [“Koala”], [and] one for Paula Newsome. I knew that based on the bodies in the barrel that were found in Lake Mead kind of linked to mob hits was one way to go. I didn’t want to do a cliché mob story, but I...

Remember when CSI creator Anthony Zuiker and star Marg Helgenberger shared with us that another original series cast member would be showing up on Vegas this season? Well, now we know who it is. Szmanda first appeared as Greg in the pilot of the CBS procedural’s original run (2000-2015). He recurred for the first two seasons before being upped to series regular. He was last seen when the original series ended with “Immortality” in 2015. Szmanda’s return comes after we’ve already seen a few stars from CSI in Vegas. Updated with CBS statement: CBS CEO George Cheeks insists the network will continue programming the 10 p.m. hour, countering the view of Hearst Television chief Jordan Wertlieb, which went unchallenged by three other local TV leaders during a panel Wednesday at the Nab Show New York.

Anthony Zuiker and Sinclair Broadcast Group have struck an unusual deal that calls for the “CSI” creator to work with the station group giant on crafting original content, some drawn from Sinclair’s wealth of local news archives.
The plan is to sell shows in syndication to other stations as well as to assemble docu series pulled from the archives of its 185 TV stations that can be licensed to outside buyers. Zuiker will also consult with Sinclair’s news directors and journalists on amping up the storytelling qualities of local news reports, particularly on big national stories.
Zuiker was recruited for the job by Scott Ehrlich, who joined the Baltimore-based TV station giant in May as chief innovation officer.
“This is another post-covid example of a paradigm shift in how content creators are going to get things on the air,” Zuiker told Variety.

After a decade-long absence from the world of yellow tape and bloody corpses, Marg Helgenberger reprised her role as Catherine Willows Thursday on CBS’ CSI: Vegas. It seems her character’s so-called “retirement” — which involved serving on the board of the Eclipse hotel and mentoring young women in forensic science — wasn’t that fulfilling, so the episode began with her asking Maxine (Paula Newsome) for her old gig back.
Fortunately, there were a couple of job openings since Gil (William Petersen) and Sara (Jorja Fox) were never replaced after leaving at the end of last season. When Marg Helgenberger left the first iteration of CSI back in Season 12, she did it because, well, she needed the break. She was the original female lead opposite Billy Petersen. “I played the role for so long. It felt like it had become a part of my identity,” she told reporters Friday during CBS’ TCA panel.
So when the CSI: Vegas producers called Helgenberger to join the cast in Season 2, it took a minute before she could commit to stepping inside the yellow tape again.

Exclusive: Jamie McShane (Bloodline) is joining CBS’ CSI: Vegas, a sequel to the mothership CSI series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, in a recurring role. Additionally, Paul Guilfoyle, who played Jim Brass on the original will return to reprise his role in the sequel series, appearing in two episodes.
The sequel series opens a new chapter in Las Vegas, the city where it all began. Facing an existential threat that could bring down the Crime Lab, a brilliant team of forensic investigators must welcome back old friends and deploy new techniques to preserve and serve justice in Sin City.
McShane will play Anson Wix, a civil attorney. A self-made scrapper, he’s someone you’d want in your corner, but the last person you’d want to face off. After years of hard work, he now has his own practice.

Mandeep Dhillon has been cast as a lead in CSI: Vegas, which has been nearing a formal straight-to-series order at CBS, I have learned. CBS declined comment.
Dhillon joins fellow new series regulars Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria and Mel Rodriguez and returning CSI stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox in the project, which serves as a sequel to the mothership CSI series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. CSI: Vegas, from writer Jason Tracey, CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, has been eyed as a potential ongoing series running for multiple seasons.

I hear William Petersen and Jorja Fox are finalizing their deals to star in CSI: Vegas, which serves as a sequel to the mothership CSI series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, reprising their roles as Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle, respectively. While billed as an event series, I hear CSI: Vegas, from writer Jason Tracey (Elementary), CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, could become an ongoing series running for multiple seasons.
