When Dave Mustaine looks back on making Countdown to Extinction, the 1992 album that propelled Megadeth into the mainstream, he’s thankful for his clarity of mind at the time. After years of alcohol and drug abuse, the eternally redheaded singer, guitarist, and songwriter had gotten sober before the making of the group’s previous album — the 1990 thrash masterpiece Rust in Peace — and that new state led to him exploring more of a simplified and streamlined approach to speed metal on Countdown singles like “Symphony of Destruction” and “Sweating Bullets.”

'Money Monster' with George Clooney and Jack O'Connell: TV celebrity and unwise investor/hostage taker. 'Money Monster' review: Jodie Foster movie suffers from both qualitative and intellectual disconnect Sometimes there's a difference between what a movie thinks it is and what it actually is. Usually it's a qualitative disconnect, as in “this movie thinks it's exciting but it's actually boring” or “this movie assumes Kevin Hart is funny when, in fact, he's not.” In the case of Money Monster, the divide is also an intellectual versus anti-intellectual one. The fourth film directed by Jodie Foster fancies itself a ripped from the headlines wail from the bottom of the economic ladder. A thriller-cum-exposé into how Wall Street and big media suckered average Americans into following the Pied Pipers of TV's financial punditry class over the cliff into economic ruin. However, the movie we're really getting is...

In certain corners of dramatic television, the kids are not all right. There, all manner of Pied Pipers lead the children into the proverbial sea. Indeed, to watch "True Detective," "Broadchurch," "Gracepoint," "The Killing" and "Top of the Lake" in any concentrated span of time, regardless of their respective merits, is to become convinced that the humdrum rhythms of childhood are always on the verge of shattering. "The Missing," the latest original series from Starz, only adds to this litany, and you would be forgiven for deciding, after its rather dolorous beginning, that there's no more room for child endangerment on your DVR. Keep following the tangled threads, however, and you may discover something else entirely: the possibility of redemption. Written by Harry and Jack Williams and directed by Tom Shankland, "The Missing" concerns Tony and Emily Hughes (James Nesbitt and Frances O'Connor), an English...

While last week's episode of "Silicon Valley" smacked of tired sitcom tropes and predictable outcomes, this week the show manages to put the TV writing 101 textbook away and let character dictate both the humor and the direction of the plot. Crazy, right? Most importantly, Gilfoyle and Dinesh are able to do something other than lob semi-funny co-worker jokes at one another. Note to the writers' room: Kumail Nanjiani and Martin Starr are two of your greatest assets. Use them wisely. This episode was a step in the right direction, if only a step. Instead of staying stubbornly tied to their computers, Dinesh and Gilfoyle actually have a reason for their bickering: Tara. While Tara isn't much of a character, she doesn't have to be more than a walking silk bathrobe to unsettle the testosterone-centric house. Just the news that Gilfoyle has a girlfriend rocks the geek collective; the fact that Erlich,...

The still-young director's highly praised film represents an effort to hang with cinema's biggest guns. He seems to have done it
Last week, the Toronto film festival was treated to a rare sighting of Paul Thomas Anderson, who with his unkempt hair and bushy demeanor resembles a cross between a film director and a marmoset.
"I just want to tell you that I don't consider that we're dealing with a cult," he told the assembled journalists about his film, The Master, which is based in part on the founding of Scientology.
"Trust me, it's not about Scientology," said its star, Philip Seymour Hoffman, earlier in the year – a mixture of concerted PR voodoo and counter-bluff worthy of Orson Welles, who famously denied that William Randolph Hearst had been any kind of inspiration for Citizen Kane.
California is, of course, the home of the cult. Anderson grew up in the San Fernando valley,...

When film historians look back at the last decade in British cinema, the genre (and it seems to be one) of ‘low-budget action-thriller’ is unlikely to be well regarded. Generally a synonym for ‘badly written gangster flick’, the usual formula for such movies is to combine former Eastenders cast members, with lots of swearing, a few guns and less tension than a children’s birthday party.
Of course, there are always exceptions to this, and Cleanskin is certainly one. Tense, intelligent and with well developed characters, it shows just what can be done with a shoestring budget and a talented writer.
Earlier this week we headed down to Mayfair for the film’s premiere, where we spoke to the cast and director about the controversial subject matter, the potential audience reaction and the attraction of smaller budget British features.

"American Idol" debuted a new commercial during Game 4 of the World Series. It featured judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest walking along a Hollywood backlot city street and getting a mob of United Colors of Benetton youngsters to follow them like they were the Pied Pipers of Hamlin.
Two things strike us (other than the weird Pied Piper thing) - first off, did you catch Randy Jackson trying to hold J.Lo's hand and she letting it drop because no one is going to hold J.Lo's beautiful hand in his giant sweaty paw. And secondly, the tagline was "the incredible journey begins."
The judges are totally the "Incredible Journey" animals - J.Lo is Sassy the cat, Tyler is the crazy hyper Chance and Randy is the old, ready to be put out to pasture Shadow (Rip, Don Ameche).
So "American Idol" is back Jan.

Singer pens letter to director of documentary that criticises his rock concert campaigns
The singer and activist Bob Geldof has launched an impassioned defence of his lifetime's charitable work, claiming he has used his fame to persuade world leaders to take global poverty seriously and mocking anti-poverty demonstrators as "wankers dressed as clowns".
His comments were penned in a 6,000-word letter to the director of a documentary that makes stinging and, Geldof believes, entirely unjustified criticisms of his rock concert campaigns.
In an attempt to persuade the director to retract the allegations from the film, which will be broadcast next week, Geldof wrote a meandering and at times emotional explanation of his work.
In the letter, seen by the Guardian, Geldof claimed to have had significant influence over world leaders, including Tony Blair, in the run-up to the 2005 G8 summit, and contrasted the achievements of his Live 8 campaign with...
