Often in cinema, and certainly in the documentary format, there is an expectation that is projected onto audiences, of an unashamed desire for conflict. Perhaps aided by the rise in True Crime mini-series on the likes of Netflix, with a popularity that suggests a thirst for morbidity amongst viewers. But there is something to be said about simply delving into the life of an inherently good-hearted, affable (and unproblematic) subject. On this occasion the aforementioned individual is former footballer Jermain Defoe, who hung up his boots in 2022 after a decorated and illustrious career, scoring goals, and a lot of goals at that, for both club and country.
Directed by James Ross, there’s an in-built affection here for his subject, as we follow Defoe in his life post-retirement, as he, like all other ex-pros, must mould a new path for himself, be it in the sport, with opportunities in punditry and coaching,...

As an Arsenal fan, I almost feel like a traitor for simply watching this documentary. But I do love a good documentary on almost any subject, football ones even more so. There’s been a lot of good Arsenal documentaries too, from 89 to ‘Invincible’ to Rocky and Wrighty: From Brockley to the Big Time, I’ve seen and enjoyed plenty. There’s also an incredible amount of documentaries on the top stars of the game – Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Gazza, the list goes on – so it’s good to see a film on – for want of a better term – a slightly less ‘big time’ player.
That might sound a little harsh on Jermaine Defoe, who has played for many years in the Premier League and in the World Cup for England. He is no doubt a high-profile footballer.

"It's not just about football... It's more than just kickin' a ball." Kaleidoscope Ent. in the UK has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Defoe – a defining portrait of one of England's greatest goal-scorers, Jermain Defoe. The story of footballer Jermain Defoe is being told in a new documentary feature, coming to UK cinemas in February.
The latest sporting figure to be the subject of a feature documentary? That’s Jermain Defoe, the former football star who played for clubs such as West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Rangers and Portsmouth in a career that spanned nearly 25 years.
Defoe was awarded an OBE in 2018, for his work with the Jermain Defoe foundation, that supports vulnerable and homeless children.
The documentary feature has been directed by James Ross and produced by Naomi Notice. Defoe contributes to it as well, alongside names such as Sandra Defoe, Gemma Lowery (the mother of the late and inspirational youngster Bradley Lowery), Harry Redknapp, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch.
Kaleidoscope is distributing the film, which will be in UK cinemas on February 29th 2024. If it follows the usual pattern of these things,...

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2023, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV1, Stv and Itvx last week from Old Trafford, Manchester, has raised £14.6 million for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the happy, healthy, play-filled childhoods they are entitled to.
Thanks to the generous support of the UK public, Unicef UK supporters, ITV1, Stv and Itvx viewers, this year’s amount brings the current total raised to date, since Soccer Aid for Unicef was founded by Unicef UK Ambassador Robbie Williams in 2006, to over £90 million for children worldwide.
The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out Old Trafford stadium in Manchester – welcoming back over 63,000 fans to the same venue that hosted the very first Soccer Aid for Unicef match in 2006. The match ended 4-2 to Soccer Aid World XI, with the team keeping the overall lead with 7-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match.

I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! has returned for a brand new series with a fresh bunch of contestants.
The ITV series is taking place in Wales, as opposed to Australia, for the second year running due to the pandemic
Proceedings kicked off last week with a bumper episode that saw broadcaster Richard Madeley and Saturdays singer Frankie Bridge led two teams in the first Bushtucker Trial. Madeley has since been forced to exit the series after he was taken to hospital as a “precaution” due to ill health.
While many viewers usually express sympathy for the contestants as they participate in these challenging trials, it’s worth remembering they’ve been paid good money to be on the show.
So, how much is each celebrity earning for their appearance in the reality series? The full amount haven’t been officially announced, but this year’s highest-paid star...

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2020 has, thanks to the generosity of ITV viewers, raised a record £11,552,577 – the most the match has ever raised in the history of the show, which was broadcast exclusively live on ITV and Stv.
For the first time in the match’s history, donations were matched by both the UK government and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, meaning every £1 donated becomes £3 – up to £3 million – until Tuesday 6th October 2020.
This year’s teams of celebrities and former professional footballers played for ‘Generation Covid’, and the money raised will help Unicef stop the spread of coronavirus and limit the impact on children’s lives around the world.

Amazon has announced that more than 40 presenters and former professionals will be part of its English Premier League lineup, with its coverage of the soccer competition kicking-off in December.
Amazon secured rights to show the Premier League in the UK last year, and will air 20 matches a season. Coverage will launch on December 3 with mid-week fixtures, before it shows 10 matches on December 26-27.
BBC presenter Gabby Logan will anchor the Sunset+Vine-produced action, alongside Eilidh Barbour — a BBC and Sky broadcaster — and Jim Rosenthal, a veteran who has covered the world’s biggest sporting events for major UK broadcasters.
Logan is already hosting weekly Amazon soccer show Back of the Net, but her presence on live coverage is still a coup for the Jeff Bezos-owned streamer. Logan is one of the BBC’s highest-profile presenters, taking home a salary of more than £290,000 and hosting shows including Sports Personality of the Year.

This week, actor David Harewood met members of parliament at a Soccer Aid for Unicef event at the Houses of Parliament to support the Great Big Kickabout.
MPs attended the afternoon reception, which was hosted by Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon Jon Bercow, in the State Rooms. David Harewood told MPs about his recent trip to Sierra Leone, where he saw first-hand how Unicef programmes are improving child health, early childhood development and education in vulnerable communities.
David Harewood said: "I recently travelled to Sierra Leone with Unicef saw with my own eyes some of the incredible work done to help children around the world.
“I visited a baby care unit where there were babies no bigger than my hand, fighting for breath and fighting for life. The lifesaving work doctors and staff were doing there reminded me of why I play for Soccer Aid for Unicef.

Sunday night’s launch of the latest season of “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” on ITV has become the U.K.’s most-watched show in 2018, eclipsing recent BBC smash hit “Bodyguard” and everything else on British TV aside from live coverage of the World Cup soccer tournament.
The series debuted in the U.K. in 2002, and while the likes of other reality-tv staples such as “Big Brother” have run out of steam, “I’m a Celebrity…” still appears to be firing on all cylinders. The launch of Season 18 averaged 11 million viewers in a tough Sunday 9 p.m. slot against “The Little Drummer Girl” on the BBC and had a peak viewership of 11.9 million, or a 51% share. The knockout numbers marked a five-year high for an opening episode of the show.

Gary Lineker has joined BT Sport.
There has been much speculation about the presenter's future with the BBC, but it has now been confirmed that he has signed a new non-exclusive deal with the corporation, allowing him to present for both broadcasters.
Lineker will join Rio Ferdinand and Jake Humphrey on the presenting team for BT's Champions League coverage from next season.
He tweeted: "Thrilled to tell you, I'll be presenting @ChampionsLeague football next season on @btsport."
The retired footballer's new deal with the BBC has ensured that he will remain on Match of the Day and other programmes until at least 2020.
It has been reported that Lineker agreed a BBC pay-cut to allow him to present for BT Sport alongside his current commitments.

It’s now or never for Newcastle United.
The humiliating defeat away to Leicester City, coupled with other results going against The Magpies, has left them just two points above North East neighbours Sunderland who occupy the final relegation place And have a game in hand.
All this with just three games to play, all relegation rivals on the rise, and Newcastle seemingly declared on 35 points no out, just yet.
You just can’t see where the next point is coming from.
The team is so blatantly bereft of confidence and have no leader, on or off the pitch.
Fabricio Coloccini’s leadership skills have long been questioned while John Carver will continue to preach his own Geordieness is what makes him qualified enough to lead the club to safety in his own little deluded world.

Tottenham Hotspur are something of an enigma in the English game. Renowned for playing attractive football, there always seems to be a flaw holding them back from going on to achieve bigger and better things.
Since the inception of the Premier League, Spurs have flirted with relegation, been mired in mid-table mediocrity and have, at times, excelled while never really troubling the top teams.
They have never really been helped by numerous changes in management, which has seen the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Gerry Francis, Christian Gross, George Graham, Jacques Santini, Martin Jol, Harry Redknapp and many more waltz through and then slouch out of the seemingly ever revolving manager’s door at the Lane.
Some truly wonderful players have entertained the White Hart Lane faithful. Jurgen Klinsmann, Teddy Sheringham, David Ginola and Luka Modric are just a selection of the fantastic players Spurs have had within their ranks.

It was a surprisingly quiet transfer deadline day for self-styled cockney wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers, despite rumours flying around about bold moves for the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor. Any speculation about Redknapp’s lack of signings and his future at the club was silenced, however, the very next day thanks to his resignation.
While “imminent knee surgery” was given as the reason for the failing manager parting company with the second from bottom club, it is hard not to perceive Redknapp’s departure as a case of jumping before he was pushed. Especially when you look at an incredible 0 away points from a possible 33 (not to mention cup defeats from League 1 Sheffield United and League 2 Burton Albion).

Mauro Zarate’s short-lived loan move to Qpr now looks to be over. With the club expecting to get rid of Carlton Cole to West Brom and a potential deal to bring Emmanuel Adebayor scuppered over the fact that Daniel Levy refused to pay his wages at a rival, the club are short on options, so it is perhaps more that issue than a problem with his reception at Qpr that has seen the cancellation of th eloan.
Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp has done a little bit of business on deadline day by swapping Zarate for Matt Jarvis, who joins Qpr on loan until the end of the season. He’s great at putting the ball into the box, and he could well be a key to getting even more out of Charlie Austin.

Having seen his attempt to sign Bafetimbi Gomis from Swansea City thwarted by the player’s assertion that he’s going nowhere, Sam Allardyce is being forced to look elsewhere if he wants to bring in attacking reinforcements.
The manager faces the possibility of a late sale of Enner Valencia to Chelsea according to newspaper reports – which are given some weight by the fact that they’ve cleared out two spaces in their squad and signed only one player – and Andy Carroll is injured again (though not badly), so new options are necessary.
Sky Bet have now moved the Hammers to 5/1 favourites to sign Emmanuel Adebayor from Tottenham where he is apparently available on loan, suggesting that it is Allardyce and not Harry Redknapp who will sign the player on a short term deal. That would be a good move for West Ham, though whether he...

Seeing as many football fans seem to get more excited about transfers than actual matches these days, it's no surprise how giddy people get about Transfer Deadline Day.
There are regular clichés: "come and get me" pleas, Jim White's two phones, "no value in the market in January" and the window "slamming shut", but none are more well-worn than Harry Redknapp being interviewed out of his car window.
So, when Rednkapp (not a wheeler-dealer... a fackin' football manager), told Sky's reporter Gary Cotterill that Qpr wouldn't be doing much today, this was inevitably how it was reported.

West Ham United striker Mauro Zarate is in talks over a loan move to fellow Premier League side Queens Park Rangers.
The 27-year-old, who also has an offer from Spaniards Deportivo La Coruna on the table, only joined West Ham in the summer from Argentine club Velez Sarsfield. However, he has struggled to hold down a first-team place due to the form of fellow forwards Diafra Sakho, Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia.
The Hammers’ manager Sam Allardyce revealed Zarate will undergo a medical with Rangers on Tuesday.
Zarate, who has scored just two goals in eight West Ham appearances so far this season, should complete his move to Loftus Road before Rangers’ Fa Cup tie against Sheffield United this weekend.
After starting his career with Velez Sarsfield, Zarate made his name during a loan spell with Birmingham City in 2008. Four goals in 14 Premier League appearances earned...

Either Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini are injured, or they aren’t; it’s really not rocket science.
News from around the country this morning, and overnight suggested that both would definitely miss the Wpr game, and were likely to miss as much as a month out of the first-team. So, according to the local papers, who have no access to the club aside from mysterious “sources” who presumably meet them under the cover of Grays multi-story car-park and talk in whispers around their massive comedy collars, suggest the muscle and knee injuries aren’t bad at all.

For a lot of people, the biggest problem in the clash between Alan Pardew and Hatem Ben Arfa at Newcastle was Ben Arfa himself: he’s viewed by some as a lazy, wayward genius, all too happy to throw away ability when asked for some hard-work. Even those who recognise the player as a brilliant talent with the power to change every game he plays in concede that he’s not a 90 minute player.
That is the accepted truth, because that is what the club, and Alan Pardew in particular have sold us for the past couple of years – ever since, in fact, he abandoned the 4-3-3 system that helped Ben Arfa enjoy his best form as a Newcastle player.
In the summer, we were told Ben Arfa was over-weight, and had let himself go badly, and no matter how good his raw ability, he was to be viewed as a tragic player,...

The quality of football has always been of prime importance to West Ham fans, We have rarely seen success throughout our history and that’s fine. Since the success of Ron Greenwood’s West Ham team of the 1960s, we have seldom been close to traditional success.
Over these years though, we have seen some fantastic West Ham teams, players and performances and that’s what West Ham is all about. The fans long for good looking football and exciting, passionate players. Player’s such as Paolo Di Canio and Carlos Tevez have lit up Upton Park in more recent years for this very reason, and have both stated their love of the club.
The experiences players have endured through their times with West Ham have stuck with them, along with a strong feeling of togetherness and an admiration of the club and it’s fans.

West Ham have been criticised in recent years for our tendency to panic buy. £15.5 million for a repeatedly injured Andy Carroll doesn’t scream great value. Neither does a £10.75 million Matt Jarvis; although he has put in some great performances for us, he’d be hard pushed to live up to that price tag.
Even when purchasing seemingly wisely, we have seldom seen great surprise purchases. When we received £18 million for the sale if Rio Ferdinand to Leeds, Harry Redknapp decided to use the money to sign a number of cheaper players rather than a replacement. Arrivals included £2.5 million Rigobert Song and £2.2 million Titi Camara, who were both an embarrassment to the club.
Criticisms aside, however, some of our dealings in the transfer market have really paid off and bargain players have flourished at West Ham. This list is a celebration of those rare occasions in...

No control. Those two small words are what sum up the transfer dealings of Queens Park Rangers over the last number of years. With both Mark Hughes and Harry Redknapp recently treating the club like a game of ‘Football Manager’, it’s no surprise to see the results. Too many players of the wrong sort have been acquired, resulting in a bad harmony within the camp. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club go through managers like nobody’s business. In the Premier League era alone – and including caretaker spells – there have been twenty different managerial reigns at White Hart Lane, which averages out at almost one per year. Impatient chairmen like Alan Sugar and Daniel Levy are to blame, as they have failed to give a number of individuals sufficient time to turn the club’s fortunes around.
In the last two years alone, Spurs have had four men in charge, with Harry Redknapp’s four year tenure coming to an end in 2012, him being replaced by Andre Villas-boas, Tim Sherwood taking over from him last December and losing his job in May, and current boss Mauricio Pochettino taking on the role after that.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been completely left out of the Spurs squads for both the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League campaigns this season – this is in spite of the fact that only 23 players have been named in both, even though clubs are actually allowed to name 25 – casting a serious doubt over his footballing future.
The Cameroon international is now out in the cold, with Danny Rose and Ben Davies well ahead of him in the left back pecking order at White Hart Lane and, after having failed to earn a move away from the club in the summer transfer window, he probably faces at least four months of total inactivity until the January window opens.
Assou-Ekotto spent all of last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers and the 30-year-old was highly expected to join up with the Hoops and his former Spurs...

The summer transfer window has now closed and, like every other team in England, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s business for this year is complete.
The club have signed six new players, with left back Ben Davies joining from Swansea City for £10 million, goalkeeper Michel Vorm also joining from Swansea City for £5 million, centre back Eric Dier joining from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £4 million, right back DeAndre Yedlin joining from Seattle Sounders for £2.5 million (albeit rejoining the Mls club on loan until next year), centre back Federico Fazio joining from Sevilla for £8 million and centre midfielder Benjamin Stambouli joining from Montpellier for £4.7 million.
That brings their total spend to £34.2 million, but a mass exodus from the club (29 players have left, including those who have left on loan, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to dramatically trim the squad) has seen nearly £40 million brought in, giving...

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed (via the club’s official Twitter account) the sale of Brazil international midfielder Sandro to Queens Park Rangers on a three-year contract.
Rangers are said to have paid around £10 million for his services and the move sees Sandro reuniting with his former White Hart Lane boss Harry Redknapp.
Sandro had fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane – mostly due to his playing style not suiting Mauricio Pochettino’s fast passing philosophy – and he would have found game time even harder to come by following the signing of Benjamin Stambouli earlier on deadline day.
The midfielder had built a great rapport with the Spurs fans in his four years at the club, thanks largely to both his tenacious attitude on the pitch and his fun personality off it.
He left a message on his Facebook page regarding his thoughts on the move:

Qpr owner Tony Fernandes has just spoken to Sky Sports News to state that any move for Fabio Borini is highly unlikely. The major issue according to the former F1 team owner is that player expectations and agent expectations are too much of an impediment at the minute, and it’s not likely that anything can be negotiated before the end of the transfer window.
Borini had long been linked with a move to Sunderland, but with Sebastian Coates joining the Black Cats the chance to sign him on loan has disappeared, and Qpr had seemed to leap into the lead as the favourites to sign the Italian.
Sadly now for Qpr fans, Borini looks unlikely, though there is some good news as a move for Sandro is almost complete, and Rangers are still trying to make something happen to reunite Harry Redknapp with Jermain Defoe,...

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have completed the signing of French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli from Ligue 1 side Montpellier.
The transfer has been rumoured for several days now, but was only confirmed on the official Spurs Twitter account a short while ago.
The 24-year-old, who is uncapped, but who will now surely be looking to secure a place in the French national side, came through the ranks at Montpellier, has spent his entire professional career at the club and was a key part of their title-winning side in the 2011-12 season when he was a team-mate of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.
He has signed a five-year contract at White Hart Lane, becoming Mauricio Pochettino’s sixth signing of the summer, and is rumoured to have cost Spurs just £4.7 million.
He is a holding player who played 37 of Montpellier’s 38 league games last season and his signing...

Regardless of how much Newcastle need a striker to help ease the burden on the young and injured options currently around the first team, and of how many goals he has scored in the Premier League, £7m for 31-year-old Jermain Defoe is a lot of money.
Whether it is too much remains to be seen, but it seems strange that Newcastle would even be linked to the striker, even if he scored 11 goals in 16 games for John Carver’s former side Toronto Fc. He’s not exactly within the usual boundaries for signing players, but the only thing that should really matter here is whether Newcastle would profit from his experience in real terms. Or in other words, whether he would be able to score the goals Alan Pardew needs to get his first league win of the season.
Defoe is undoubtedly still talented, and he...

Having already cut nine deals this summer, and with very little precedent of doing anything really positive in the final day of the transfer window, Newcastle fans could be forgiven for ignoring Sky Sports News and Twitter as much as possible but there may still be business to be done.
According to David Craig, who is currently in residence outside Newcastle’s training ground, Newcastle are still trying to sign Atletico Madrid’s Belgian centre-half Toby Alderweireld, despite strong links to Southampton, and that they are one of the clubs who could be in for Jermain Defoe.
Alderweireld is on the verge of leaving Atletico – with a loan move suggested – having seen his first-team opportunities restricted last year, and would suit Newcastle’s need to strengthen at the back. It has been said that Newcastle would need to move players on first, but with Roma supposedly...

Harry Redknapp should probably know better. He brought Loic Remy to the club from under the nose of Newcastle United on the promise of more money, and now seems somewhat shocked that the striker has seemingly gone back on his promise not to leave when another big club came around.
Yes, Chelsea and Arsenal met the transfer release clause for the French striker, but that is no reason for the striker to move. He was merely shown the door, he doesn’t have to go through it.
It looks like Chelsea are now his most likely destination, as Arsenal have withdrawn their interest in the Qpr forward, with both sides having met his reported £10.5m. He was subsequently left out of Qpr’s squad to face Sunderland, and is expected to complete a deal sooner rather than later.
This is the second time...
