“The Moodys” has been canceled at Fox after two seasons, Variety has learned.
The series originally debuted in December 2019. The second season debuted on April 1, but Fox pulled it from the schedule with three episodes left around two weeks later. The final episode of the season is currently slated to air this Sunday, June 20. It will now serve as the series finale. The first season consisted of six episodes, while the second season bumped it up to eight.
“The Moodys” got off to a decent start at Fox in its first season, which was centered on Christmas and played up as a holiday event series at the network. Its rating fell off hard going into the second season, essentially halving what the show averaged in the first.
The series starred Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins, Francois Arnaud, Chelsea Frei, Jay Baruchel, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Gerry Dee and Josh Segarra.

Fox is saying goodbye to The Moodys.
The network will not be bringing the family comedy series, which stars Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, back for a third season.
It’s not a huge surprise after the network quietly pulled it from the schedule after its fifth episode of the second season. The last episode is expected to air on June 20.
The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season in 2019. Fox brought it back for a second season as an ongoing family comedy, but the half-hour starring Denis Leary has struggled to get traction, ranking among the lowest rated Fox series.
Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill, The Moodys follows the tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, Moody family through their misadventures.

Updated, 1:59 Pm Pt: Hours before he is set to take the stage at an NBC News town hall, Donald Trump again attacked the network, calling it “fake news,” in what was either an effort to work the refs or goose the ratings for the event.
“I will be doing a major Fake @NBCNews Town Hall Forum, live tonight from Miami, at 8:00 P.M. They asked me to do it in place of the Rigged Steve Scully (he is now suspended from @cspan for lying) Debate. I wonder if they’ll treat me as well as Sleepy Joe? They should!”
Trump’s reference to Scully was the announcement that he was being placed on indefinitely leave after lying about his claim that his Twitter account had been hacked. Scully was to moderate the town-hall format debate that was eventually scrapped after Trump refused to participate in a virtual event.

There are just a handful of independent production companies with three or more half-hour series currently on U.S. television. One of them could surprise you: It’s Australian indie Jungle Entertainment, owned by CEO Jason Burrows, director Trent O’Donnell, writer Phil Lloyd and COO Chloe Rickard.
They are behind CBS All Access’ first original comedy series No Activity, Fox’s family comedy The Moodys and FX’s half-hour comedy-drama Mr. Inbetween. Additionally, a series by O’Donnell and Lloyd became Comedy Central’s 2014 Review. All four shows have run multiple seasons; three are American versions of the Jungle team’s Australian series, and one, Mr. Inbetween, is the actual Australian series airing on FX in the U.S.
The Moodys and Mr. Inbetween were recently renewed for another season. A third season of No Activity also in the works; it has already been written. While not formally greenlighted, the...

The Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins comedy “The Moodys” is getting a second season at Fox.
The series, which follows a tight-knit but dysfunctional family, is an adaptation of Australian series “A Moody Christmas” from The Jungleboys Entertainment and Australian Broadcasting Corporation. CBS Television Studios is the studio behind the show.
“The Moodys” debuted as a six-episode holiday event series. Fox’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn had indicated last summer that if the series proved successful, the network might bring it back for another Christmas run.
“With ‘The Moodys,’ we set out to brand the holidays in the only way Fox can – bold and unconventional. What we ended up with was a special show – and a family – everyone at the network fell in love with,” said Thorn. “Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill perfectly captured the hysterics of Christmas, with sharp banter and real moments of family togetherness...

The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season last year.
The second season, targeted for the 2020-21 season will not be holiday-themed, with a bigger order size than the six-episode original limited run. I hear it will be between 6 and 13 half-hours. It may be paired with Fox’s only returning live-action comedy series, Last Man Standing, which shares a similar blue-collar sensibility.

The ABC’s highly respected head of comedy Rick Kalowski today announced his resignation after more than six years in the post.
After commissioning and overseeing the production of 80 titles, spanning pilots, series, digital content and podcasts, the executive tells If he is exhausted and needs a break.
He will stay in place until February to give the ABC ample time to recruit a successor and will pursue new career opportunities in the Australian and global screen industry. He’s having discussions about his next move but nothing is locked in.
Arguably he will step down after one of the ABC’s most distinctive and successful years in comedy, with hits such as Frayed, the fourth season of Utopia, the second of Squinters and the finales of Get Krack!n and The Letdown.
Among other shows produced under his watch, including several commissioned by his predecessor Debbie Lee, were Rosehaven,...

Princess Pictures founder/producer Laura Waters and MD Jenni Tosi have repositioned the production company.

The cast of ‘Bad Mothers’
As parents, Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang agreed that being a mother can be an impossible job and that no matter how hard they try, women will sometimes feel they are bad mothers.
The Auckland-based founders of Filthy Productions came up with the concept of a comedy-drama about five mums whose kids go to the same school, overlaid with a murder mystery, and pitched it to the Nine Network.
Execs at Nine suggested Strawhan and Lang find an Australian partner, which turned out to be Jungle Entertainment. The result is Bad Mothers, which launches on Nine at 9 pm on February 18 and across the ditch on Tvnz on February 20.
The ensemble show stars Tess Haubrich as Sarah, whose perfect life as a Gp, wife and mother is shattered when she discovers her husband Anton (Daniel MacPherson) is having an affair. Even worse, her best friend is...

Harry Greenwood.
Harry Greenwood graduated from Nida in 2012, so being named one of the Casting Guild of Australia’s 10 Rising Stars of 2018 could be considered as long overdue recognition.
“It has been a long haul,” the 29-year-old son of Hugo Weaving and artist Katrina Greenwood tells If. “It is nice to be recognised.”
Greenwood’s career has been on an upward trajectory since his breakthrough role as young Digger Bevan Johnson, the older brother of Kodi Smit-McPhee’s Thomas Johnson, in the 2015 Nine Network miniseries Gallipoli directed by Glendyn Ivin.
Next year could well be his biggest yet as he will be seen in Bad Mothers, the eight-part Nine Network comedy/drama from Jungle Entertainment and New Zealand-based Filthy Productions, and in two high-profile features: Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang and Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale.

The Fox network has pulled the plug on the Us remake of Jungleboys. ABC comedy A Moody Christmas.
The network decided not to proceed despite having commissioned the scripts for a pilot and for a second episode.
The show.s creators, Trent O.Donnell and Phil Lloyd, wrote the scripts and O.Donnell was to direct the pilot, which would have featured many of the same characters from the original, looking at a dysfunctional family through the eyes of the youngest son who thought he'd escaped them, only to find himself trapped there once more.
The pilot was to be produced by Jungleboys in collaboration with Doug Ellin, creator of Entourage, and the Tannenbaum Co.s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum for CBS TV Studios.
Fox.s decision leaves the producers free to pitch the project elsewhere. All four major Us broadcast networks as well as Us studios bid for the...

Dave Eastgate, Lawrence Leung and Stephanie Son in Maximum Choppage.
.
Head of ABC TV comedy Rick Kalowski has commissioned a stand-alone pilot, a prototype he intends to test for further pilots, and he.s developing a sitcom to be filmed in front of a studio audience.
In a further break from the traditional approach to comedy, Kalowski is developing several shows that are each built around an established performer-writer. All that is in addition to eight series which are either in production or post.
The stand-alone pilot deals with an unusual subject- mental illness. Details of that sitcom are under wraps but Kowalski tells If he.s looking for other projects that are suitable material for pilots.
The studio-based comedy could be the ABC.s first since Mother and Son, the Geoffrey Atherden-created classic which ran until 1994. The show is being developed with writer . producer Marieke Hardy and would...

Doug Ellin is hard at work making the Entourage movie, but when he is done, he will be returning to television with an overall deal at CBS TV Studios. Under the rich, three-year pact, Ellin will develop broadcast and cable projects for the studio under a newly formed production company (name Tbd) with Jim Lefkowitz, who will help spearhead development. The overall pact stems from Ellin’s collaboration with CBS TV Studios on the comedy The Moodys, which received a put pilot commitment at Fox in August. It is based on the Australian series A Moody Christmas about a son who abandons his lofty goals to move back home to help run the family business. Aacta.s decision this year to combine the best TV comedy and best light entertainment series into one category has drawn fire from some of the leading lights of the comedy business.
Actor/director Josh Lawson describes the move as .baffling and insulting for both categories. and complains there is only one category for acting- best performance in a TV comedy- compared with four for acting in TV dramas. .What are we to take away from this - that comedy is somehow easier? That people who work on comedies don't work as hard? That actors who do comedy aren't as talented or as deserving of accolades,. asks Lawson, who stars in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (which opens in Australia on December 19) and in Us thriller Crave (which launches in the Us on Friday). .What a slap in the face for all the hard working, incredibly talented Australians who work...
