Childhood friends Harold Reid, Lew DeWitt, Phil Balsley and Joe McDorman formed the Four-Star Quartet in 1948. When McDorman left the group, he was replaced by Don Reid, Harold's younger brother. They changed the group's name to the Kingsmen, but found that there were several other acts by that name. The final name came from a box of Statler tissues.
