Billed as a vampire comedy, Don’t Suck is the story of Pete, a burnt-out comedian who’s spent too much time chasing fame on the standup circuit. He’s finally managed to go viral, but it’s from using the C word on a cashier while trying to be funny. However, he and comedy club owner Danny dismiss it as her fault for being too easily offended.
That’s followed by Pete approvingly referring to Danny “Weinstiening” the students in his comedy class and boasting about being part of the mob that stormed the Capitol. That should give you an idea of where Don’t Suck is coming from, what kind of jokes to expect and whether or not to cut your losses and bail now.

It’s a shame Don’t Suck doesn’t take its own advice [comic rimshot]. Sorry, are you not a fan of plucking low-hanging fruit? Don’t expect anything more from Rj Collins’ soulless vampire standup horror comedy that tries to manufacture edginess with faceplant jokes about Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Jeffrey Epstein in the first however many minutes. Everyone is talking about “Velma,” the new R-rated animated series based on the lore of “Scooby-Doo,” that just debuted on HBO Max.
Centered around the titular mystery of Mystery Inc. (now voiced by Mindy Kaling), who is dealing with her missing mother, her strained relationship with Daphne (Constance Wu) and the fact that her plutonic Bff Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (Sam Richardson) is secretly in love with her. Oh and Fred (Glenn Howerton) is the prime suspect in a series of grisly murders. Featuring course language and plenty of nudity and gore, “Velma” takes the preexisting franchise into much darker, more mature territory.
It’s such a huge swing that you are right to wonder where this series came from (and who okayed it). TheWrap asked creator Charlie Grandy and star Mindy Kaling about the show’s secret origins and if there was any pushback to how extreme it went.

Everyone loves an underdog story — even one that conspicuously excludes a literal dog. That’s the drive behind HBO Max’s “Velma,” an origin story about its titular bespectacled mystery solver who goes on to be integral, if under-appreciated, in the core gang of “Scooby-Doo.” The animated series was developed by Charlie Grandy and executive produced by Grandy, Mindy Kaling, Howard Klein, and Sam Register. Over the course of eight episodes screened to critics (out of 10 total in Season 1), “Velma” proves to be a send up of high school shows, crime dramas, and television at large, full of all-star performances and packed with punchlines.

If the rule for covers of widely cherished songs — make it your own, or leave it alone — holds for adaptations of beloved television shows, then in one respect, HBO Max’s “Velma” is a towering success. To be fair, this thoroughly modern reimagining of “Scooby-Doo” maintains the load-bearing beams of the over 50-year-old cartoon’s lore. It’s still set in Crystal Cove, a coastal enclave known for its gem deposits, teenage busybodies and, depending on whom you ask, an overpopulation of either ghosts or fallen magnates with a passion for cosplay.
Beyond that, “Velma” is irreverent to a fault. Starring Mindy Kaling, and developed by her longtime collaborator Charlie Grandy, “Velma” treats most of the “Scooby” canon as suggestions whispered too low to be heard. The most obvious detour is the absence of the iconic talking dog, as “Velma” is a prequel set well before the events of the...

"We do make a good team, don't we?" HBO Max has unveiled the first official trailer for the series Velma, the animated series focusing on Velma Dinkley, the nerdy character from the Scooby Doo series. Created by Warner Bros Animation, and developed by comedian Charlie Grandy, this series is an "adult" version of Scooby Doo, less so about the dog and more about high school mania. The series focuses on Velma Dinkley and the rest of Mystery Inc. before their official formation, pitched as a "love quadrangle" between them. "This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers." Mindy Kaling voices Velma, along with Sam Richardson as Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, and Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, plus Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, and Wanda Sykes. Jinkies! Velma is going solo in early 2023.
HBO Max has set a Jan. 12, 2023, release date for Mindy Kaling’s animated series “Velma,” a spinoff of the beloved, but family-friendly, “Scooby-Doo” series.
In this modern, adult-oriented take on the classic “Scooby-Doo” franchise, the series follows the origin story of Velma Dinkley (Kaling), the brainiac of the Mystery Inc. gang. After a corpse is found in her high school, Velma teams up with Daphne (Constance Wu), Shaggy (Sam Richardson) and Fred (Glenn Howerton) to solve the murder.
The official logline reads, “This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
Back in October, Kaling and showrunner Charlie Grandy revealed at New York Comic Con that Scooby-Doo himself will not make an appearance in the series. Kaling’s series also reimagines several members of the Mystery Inc. gang, including making Velma of South Asian descent.

While promoting HBO Max’s Velma at New York Comic Con on Thursday, star and EP Mindy Kaling admitted that she was surprised by the social media reaction to her decision to make the beloved character a South Asian girl.
“I think of the characters in this are iconic but in no way …are they defined by their whiteness,” Kaling told the crowd. “Most Indian American [women], when they see skeptical, hardworking under-appreciated characters, they can identify with her. The vast majority are ready for it. This show is for them.”

“Growing up I identified with Velma,” continued Kaling. “She was so cute but not traditionally hot .. with a questionable haircut. I feel so honored I get to do the voice … she’s a truth teller, cutting through the bullshit of life. When you are smart and under-appreciated.
