Girls creator is embroiled in a ‘whitewashing’ row after news that she is to adapt the story of Doaa Al-Zamel whose boat was rammed in the Mediterranean
Lena Dunham has suffered a social media backlash after it emerged she has been commissioned by Steven Spielberg and Jj Abrams to write the script for a film about a Syrian refugee who was stranded at sea.
Dunham tweeted a report by Variety magazine that she was to work on an adaptation of A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea, the harrowing story of Doaa Al-Zamel, who survived the sinking of the boat on which she was attempting to cross the Mediterranean. (Her fiance drowned after their vessel was rammed.) The book was written by Melissa Fleming, head of communications of the United Nations’ Refugee Agency. Spielberg and Abrams are due to act as producers on the project, with short-film specialist Arif Hussein as executive producer.

Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams have teamed up again to produce a new film based on Melissa Fleming’s book, A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea: One Refugee’s Incredible Story of Love, Loss, and Survival.
Variety is reporting that they’ve hired Lena Dunham to write the script for the film which documents the true story of Doaa Al Zamel, “a mother of two fleeing Egypt for Sweden by boat. Shipwrecked along the way, Al Zamel survived for days in open water holding her two small children in each arm with only the support of an inflatable water ring.”

“Girls” may be gone, but Lena Dunham is not. Variety reports that the actress and filmmaker is adapting “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea: One Refugee’s Incredible Story of Love, Loss, and Survival” for a project being co-produced by Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams. One imagines that the movie based on Melissa Fleming’s nonfiction account of a Syrian refugee lost at sea will have a somewhat shorter title by the time it’s complete.
Fleming, who serves as chief spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr), wrote her book about Dooa Al Zamel, who fled Egypt via boat along with hundreds of other refugees (including her husband) en route to Sweden. After being shipwrecked and watching many of her fellow passengers die, she survived by cradling her two small children in her arms for days with the help of an inflatable ring.
