New Delhi, Sep 5 (Ians) The decision by the senior national selection committee and the Indian team management to include K L Rahul in the 15-member squad for Icc Men’s Odi World Cup 2023 despite not having played any competitive cricket since May this year has left many people baffled.
The Indian team management has tested several options for various positions for the last many months and yet it seems to have agreed to go ahead with a player who is just back from a long break and has recovered from a niggle only a couple of days back.
Rahul is currently preparing to fly out to Sri Lanka for the Super Four stages of the Asia Cup after being declared completely fit at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru on September 4.

Bengaluru, Aug 24 (Ians) As India’s Asia Cup-bound players begin their six-day conditioning camp in the city ahead of the six-team event, how wicketkeeper-batter Kl Rahul shapes up from a fitness perspective will be keenly witnessed.
During the Asia Cup squad announcement press conference in New Delhi on Monday, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Rahul had recovered from a right thigh injury at the Nca but picked up a niggle unrelated to the original injury which could keep him out of the initial phase of the Asia Cup.
As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, the Nca’s medical team is believed to be happy with Rahul’s batting workload but is carefully monitoring his wicketkeeping load.
“He is understood to have complained of soreness after one of the practice matches organised by the Nca last week,” it said.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed disappointment at the exclusion of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup squad, saying his presence in the team for the six-team event was necessary and hoped that a return to the Odi side wasn’t closed on him.
For India’s squad in the Asia Cup, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are the spinners in the tournament happening from August 30 to September 17. Notably, all three are left-arm spinners, though Kuldeep is a wrist-spinner, as opposed to Chahal, who is a right-arm leg-spinner.
“The one thing I feel is lacking in the team is the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don’t think there’s any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball formats. Yes, his last few games weren’t good,...

Make live coverage of selection meetings available for all, Bengal cricketer Manoj Tiwary tells Bcci
New Delhi, Aug 22 (Ians) To bring in more transparency in the selection of the national team, former India cricketer and Bengal’s current sports minister, Manoj Tiwary has suggested that Bcci should make a live broadcast of these important meetings rather than keeping them closed-door affairs.
The Bengal Ranji Trophy team captain also made it clear that he would take the path of such ‘live coverage’ if he ever gets to head the local cricket body –- the Cricket Association of Bengal (Cab).
“For fans and every stakeholder, I would like to see a live broadcast of the selection meeting so that there is more transparency in the process. Everyone will know on what basis a player is picked on the team or dropped from the team. Otherwise, questions would be raised over and over again,” Tiwary told the YouTube channel ‘Cricket Basu’ while reacting to India’s team selection...

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) To bring in more flexibility in the squad ahead of the Men’s Odi World Cup, India skipper Rohit Sharma said he wants to ensure players in the side are fine with batting anywhere if the need arises, especially in the middle-order, though they have been given specific roles in the line-up.
“Ajit is new to the picture and he didn’t know what was happening before that. I have tried to keep him updated as much as possible. But one thing I want in this team is to make sure everyone is okay to bat anywhere. That’s one thing we need to keep in mind. Now, cricket is moving in a different direction.”

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion from India’s 17-member squad for the upcoming 50-over Asia Cup came as a surprise to many. With India set to play their Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka, many expected that with pitches favouring spinners, they could pick four spinners.
But when the squad was announced in a press conference on Monday, Chahal’s name was missing, with India’s bowling composition being three spinners in Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, apart from six fast-bowling options. Asked about Chahal’s exclusion, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said it was difficult to have two wrist-spinners in the team, with Kuldeep being ahead of him.
“He is another terrific performer for India. But sometimes it is the balance of the team or the team combination. Axar (Patel) has done really well, and he can bat as well. Kuldeep (Yadav) has had a fantastic run.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) Indian senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may have scored tons in the Test series against minnows West Indies, but it seems that the Team management missed a crucial aspect of nurturing the upcoming prodigies of World cricket keeping in mind the next cycle of the World Test Championship (Wtc).

Mumbai, Aug 6 (Ians) With the recent experimentation by the team management with the Indian playing XI giving mixed results, the senior national cricket selectors will be in a fix when they sit down to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and the Asian Games which follow it, which will be important stops on the journey to the Odi World Cup to be held later in the year.
The Icc Odi World Cup in October-November in India follows on the heels of the Asia Cup 2023, which will be held from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23-October 8. With some of the biggest names in cricket battling it out, fans are being treated to a showcase of skill and talent. However, as with any competition, there are always teams that fail to live up to the expectations.
Three teams — Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings — have been eliminated from the playoff race. Capitals were the first team to be eliminated, followed by Sunrisers and Punjab Kings.
Why did Delhi fail?
Delhi Capitals have arguably been one of the worst teams in the competition this season, finishing their campaign with just 10 points from 14 matches.
The team’s internal struggles in finalising their starting lineup, coupled with underperforming key players, have contributed to their early elimination from the competition, making them effectively the first team to be knocked out.
DC’s batting line-up consists of high-quality top-order batsmen such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw.

Dharamsala, May 16 (Ians) Out of the race for the Playoffs spots despite their recent resurgence because of their poor start, the Delhi Capitals will be playing for pride when they take on Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium here on Wednesday.
Speaking ahead of the game, Delhi Capitals’ Assistant Coach Ajit Agarkar said the team is ready to go up against Pbks in their penultimate league match in Ipl 2023.
“There’s a lot of pride at stake and there are still two points to play for. We won’t change our approach and we will try to finish as high as possible on the points table.”
Wednesday’s match will provide DC with a chance for revenge against Pbks as they had lost to them by 31 runs in a match played in New Delhi on Saturday (May 13). After restricting Punjab Kings...

New Delhi, May 12 (Ians) Time and again, it’s been the batting, which has let Delhi Capitals (DC) down in the ongoing Ipl 2023 and the David Warner led side will look to sort it out when they face a desperate Punjab Kings (Pbks) in the Match No 59 of the season at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Friday.
Both teams are coming off crushing defeats in their last matches respectively. Delhi lost to Chennai on a spin-friendly Chepauk track while Punjab Kings suffered a last-ball defeat against Kkr at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The Capitals are placed at the bottom of the table with eight points from 11 matches and even if they win their next three matches, it will only take them to 14 points, which might not be enough to earn them a place in the top four.

New Delhi, May 9 (Ians) On a resurgence with four wins in their last five matches after a poor start, the Delhi Capitals will be looking to continue their winning run when they go up against four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 clash at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.
Chennai are in second place in the standings with 13 points from 11 games while Delhi are at the bottom with eight points from 10 games. A win will be crucial for both teams as it will help Chennai firm up their hold on the second spot and cut down the gap with table-toppers Gujarat Titans, while two points will help Delhi Capitals move up to 10 points and escape from the bottom.
Speaking ahead of the game, Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach Ajit Agarkar said, “The batting performance in the last game has given a lot of confidence to the team.

Bengaluru, April 14 (Ians) The Delhi Capitals have endured a poor start to the Ipl 2023 season, losing all of their four games so far. Ahead of their clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, assistant coach Ajit Agarkar admitted that fate is in the hands of the David Warner-led side to turn its winless campaign around.
“It’s in our hands to turn it around. We’ve got another opportunity in our next match. If we play our best cricket then that should be enough to get us some points. We are trying to help the players rectify their mistakes and also keep the group together as much as possible,” Agarkar was quoted as saying in a release.
In their last game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against Mumbai Indians, Delhi made 172 in 19.4 overs, with Warner and Axar Patel notching up half-centuries. Anrich Nortje and...

After suffering their second successive loss of the tournament in a six-wicket defeat to the Titans, Delhi’s assistant coach Ajit Agarkar admitted that the batting unit, which struggled to break the shackles throughout their innings, has to step up collectively for much better results, while solidly defending young batting duo of Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan in their struggles against quality fast bowling.
"They (Prithvi and Sarfaraz) have made runs in the past against fast bowling and in general, I don’t think we batted well, so why point out one or two guys? None of our top order really got going in both games. We’ve not had big runs at the top, which some of the other teams have and you can see the difference."

New Delhi, March 14 (Ians) Former captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be an impact player as well as game changer for India in the middle order during the upcoming three-match Odi series against Australia.
Following an emphatic Border-Gavaskar Trophy which ensured the Rohit Sharma-led side retain the title with a 2-1 series win, the action now shifts to the ODIs as India and Australia square play series opener on Friday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The hosts will miss the services of the ‘Hitman’, who has given the first Odi a miss due to family commitments. Hardik Pandya, the regular vice-captain, will lead the side, as India aims to continue their dominance at home and set the right momentum with 2023 also being the year for the 2023 Icc Cricket World Cup.

Ranchi, Jan 27 (Ians) India captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Jsca International Stadium in Ranchi, here on Friday.
“Looks like a very good track. The reason behind the decision to bowl first is that the ground is going to get quite wet, I can see some dew now itself. Just go out there and play the best cricket we know.”
“It’s a young side, everyone’s ready to go. We will focus on playing good cricket. Playing the ODIs before T20Is makes it easy to pass on. Hamilton, Nov 27 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that young opener Shubman Gill is a quality cricketer who will be around for a long time in the international cricket arena.
Shastri’s comments come after Gill sparkled in the 12.5 overs of play in the second Odi at Hamilton, which was abandoned due to rain. Gill drove elegantly past mid-on twice and cut Tim Southee fiercely through cover before the first spell of rain stopped play for nearly three-and-a-half hours.
After the match became 29 overs a side affair, Gill continued to shine in his timing and placement of shots, pulling Henry powerfully over deep backward square leg for six and was glorious in lofting inside-out off Michael Bracewell over extra cover for four to be 45 not out off 42 deliveries.

New Delhi, June 5 (Ians) Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami should start for India in this month's World Test Championship (Wtc) final against New Zealand, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has said.
"Bumrah, Shami - the No.1 bowler for me in the Indian Test line-up - and Ishant Sharma, who has gotten better over his career. So, those three certainly will start and if it is a green seaming wicket, you might see a fourth one for all you know," said Agarkar on Star Sports.
"The seamers will play a part and India has got as formidable an attack as any in the world. I think that's been their strength over the last few years," added the former Mumbai bowler, who played 26 Tests and 191 ODIs.

New Delhi, June 5 (Ians) Virat Kohli, who has never won an International Cricket Council (Icc) trophy as India skipper, has got a great chance to fill that void in this month's World Test Championship final against New Zealand, said former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.

Sydney, Jan 11 (Ians) Prolific Australia batsman Steve Smith faced criticism on social media after he was seen scuffing up the area around the batting crease while Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara were batting in India's second innings on the fifth day of the third Test on Monday. The match was drawn, and the four-Test series is levelled 1-1.
During the morning session on Monday, the stump camera recorded members of the Australian team coming to the crease and 31-year-old Smith was seen using his feet to scuff the guard marks left by wicketkeeper-batsman Pant. After that, Pant took the guard afresh, and went on to score an 118-ball 97.
Taking a note of this act, former India opener Virender Sehwag made a video post on his Instagram account and wrote: "Tried all tricks including Steve Smith trying to remove Pant's batting guard marks from the crease. Par kuch kaam na aaya.

Melbourne, Dec 26 (Ians) Shubman Gill should have been given his Test debut about two years ago, according to former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar. While he had his fair share of luck as he got beaten on a number of occasions by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc and was dropped on five in the fourth over, it was Gill who got India off the mark with a drive past mid-off for four two balls before that.
