Both his parents served in the United States Air Force.
In 2001 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was accepted into the Officer Candidate . His acceptance was rescinded due to a pre-existing medical condition.
After his military service Shurer joined the Secret Service in 2009 as a Special Agent assigned to the Phoenix field office. In 2014 he was selected for the Secret Service's counter assault team.
