Kkr Vice Captain Nitish Rana(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Nitish Rana, the attacking left-handed batter and part-time off-spinner, is a key player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) in the Ipl 2024. But there’s more to him than just his impressive cricket skills!
Nitish Rana’s journey from Mumbai to Kkr stardom
Nitish Rana started making his mark in the Ipl with the Mumbai Indians. However, it was after being bought by Kkr in the 2018 auction that his career truly took off. Kkr recognized his batting prowess and retained him in the 2022 Mega Auction for a cool 8 crore. He’s even been able to play international cricket, representing India in a single Odi and a couple of T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2021.
Leadership runs in Rana’s blood (sort of!). When Shreyas Iyer was unavailable due to his injury in Ipl 2023, Rana stepped up and donned the captain’s hat for Kkr.

The opener completed his hundred on Test debut in the 70th over, when the opening stand with captain Rohit Sharma had crossed 200. This is India’s highest opening partnership in West Indies in Test cricket as Jaiswal also became first Indian opener to make a Test hundred on debut outside home.
The last Indian batter to score a Test century on debut was Shreyas Iyer in 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur.

Bengaluru, July 5 (Ians) Pacer Vidwath Kaverappa picked up 5/29 to help South Zone bowl out North Zone for 198, though they were left reeling at 63/4 in first semi-final of Duleep Trophy, here on Wednesday. In the other semi-final, all-rounder Atit Sheth staged a rescue act to take West Zone from 110/6 to 216/8 against Central Zone.
Under overcast skies at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where 14 wickets fell in a day, Kaverappa was the star in bowling out North Zone below 200. Barring Prabhsimran Singh, who top-scored with 49, none of the other North Zone batters could stand up against a quality South Zone bowling attack.
Put into batting first, North Zone were reduced to 18/3 in the first hour, before Prabhsimran and Ankit Kumar (33) steadied the innings with a crucial 79-run stand. After the duo fell, Harshit Rana made a quick 22-ball 31, but wasn’t able to take North Zone past 200 as Washington Sundar (1/44) took him out.

With some of the biggest names in cricket battling it out, fans are being treated to a showcase of skill and talent. However, as with any competition, there are always teams that fail to live up to the expectations.
Three teams — Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings — have been eliminated from the playoff race. Capitals were the first team to be eliminated, followed by Sunrisers and Punjab Kings.
Why did Delhi fail?
Delhi Capitals have arguably been one of the worst teams in the competition this season, finishing their campaign with just 10 points from 14 matches.
The team’s internal struggles in finalising their starting lineup, coupled with underperforming key players, have contributed to their early elimination from the competition, making them effectively the first team to be knocked out.
DC’s batting line-up consists of high-quality top-order batsmen such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw.

After fireworks from Conway and Gaikwad, followed by cameos from Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja propelled Chennai to a massive 223/3 on what was called a sluggish pitch, the M.S. Dhoni-led side took three wickets in Power-play and made strikes regularly to restrict Delhi to 146/9, despite David Warner waging a lone battle with a fighting 86.
Gaikwad produced a stunning exhibition of back-foot shots in hitting three fours and seven sixes in his 50-ball knock while Conway was pristine in his strokeplay during his 52-ball innings to hit 11 fours and three sixes as Chennai unleashed carnage on an off-colour Delhi bowling line-up.
On a hot afternoon, Delhi’s pacers and spinners are being taken to the cleaners constantly on going too full or short in their lengths. Such was the effect of the carnage that Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel didn’t complete their full quota of overs, as Chennai...

In Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023, Delhi have won only two out of six home games so far. Their scores at the Arun Jaitley Stadium have made for a mixed reading — 162/8, 172 all out, 128/6, 188/6, 187/3 and 136/8. The Warner-led side, currently at the bottom of the standings with 10 points from 13 matches, will face Chennai Super Kings in their last game of the season at home on Saturday afternoon.
"Look, the pitches here in Delhi haven’t been great, to be totally honest. They are probably great if you have a different sort of setup for your team. Batting first, DC opening duo, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, put on 94 runs on the board before Warner was dismissed by Sam Curran just four runs short of his half-century.
Shaw, meanwhile, powered on to complete his fifty but was also sent back to the pavilion by Curran. Dharamsala, May 18 (Ians) After suffering a 15-run loss to Delhi Capitals in Ipl 2023, Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan admitted that his decision to give left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar the final over backfired, while being critical of the performance of his fast-bowlers in power-play.
The ineffective performance of his fast-bowlers meant Dhawan had to give the ball to Brar for the last three out of five overs, with Ellis bowling two. The ploy backfired in the last two overs as Ellis was hit for 18 runs while Brar gave away 23 runs as Delhi made 213/2, with Rilee Rossouw top-scoring with 82 not out off 37 balls.
“My decision of bowling the spinner (Brar) in the last over backfired. The momentum went there. Before that my fast bowler (Ellis) went for 18 runs. Those two overs cost us the game,” said Dhawan to broadcasters after the match ended.
“We didn’t bowl really well in the first six overs.

In reply, after a shaky start, Atharva Taide ( 55 off 42) and Livingstone’s blitzkrieg (94 off 48) brought Pbks back in the game. New Delhi, May 12 (Ians) Time and again, it’s been the batting, which has let Delhi Capitals (DC) down in the ongoing Ipl 2023 and the David Warner led side will look to sort it out when they face a desperate Punjab Kings (Pbks) in the Match No 59 of the season at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Friday.
Both teams are coming off crushing defeats in their last matches respectively. Delhi lost to Chennai on a spin-friendly Chepauk track while Punjab Kings suffered a last-ball defeat against Kkr at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The Capitals are placed at the bottom of the table with eight points from 11 matches and even if they win their next three matches, it will only take them to 14 points, which might not be enough to earn them a place in the top four.

Hyderabad, April 25 (Ians) Brilliant all-round effort by Axar Patel helped Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad, for whom Washington Sunder was equally good with both bat and ball, in Match 34 of Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Monday.
Axar Patel came in to bat with Delhi Capitals struggling at 62/5 and struck a crucial run-a-ball 34 and with help from seasoned Manish Pandey (34 off 28) propelled Delhi Capitals to a below-par 144/9 in 20 overs after skipper David Warner had won the toss and elected to bat first.
Axar starred with the ball too as he claimed 2-21 in his four overs and along with fellow-spinner Kuldeep Yadav (1-22), Anrich Nortje (2-33) and Ishant Sharma (1-18) applied the screws on the Sunrisers Hyderabad batters in their chase of what looked like a below-par score. He claimed the crucial wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram as they dried up the runs in the middle overs.

New Delhi, April 21 (Ians) Former England skipper Michael Vaughan stated that right-handed opener Prithvi Shaw cannot keep relying on his reputation and the things he’s done in the past, especially after suffering a poor start to Ipl 2023 for the Delhi Capitals.
In the past editions of the Ipl, Shaw had been successful in giving quick-fire starts to Delhi. But this year, he has been unable to do so, with him recording scores of 12, 7, 0, 1, 0 and 13 in the ongoing season as Delhi are still rooted to bottom of the points table, despite registering a four-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday night.

New Delhi, April 21 (Ians) An impressive show by bowlers followed by skipper David Warner’s vital fifty (57 off 41) guided Delhi Capitals their first win of the season, beating Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) by four wickets in a rain delayed Ipl 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Thursday.
On the back of Axar Patel (2/13), Kuldeep Yadav (2/15) Ishant Sharma (2/19) and Anrich Nortje’ (2/20) superb show, DC bowled out Kkr for paltry 127 in 20 overs. Jason Roy’s gritty innings of 43 off 39 and Andre Russell’s 38 not out off 31 were the saving grace for Kkr, who lost wickets at regular intervals.
In reply, Warner gave DC a brilliant start, then Kkr spinners turned the tables in the middle overs but eventually the hosts sealed the win with three balls to spare to open their account.
Chasing 128, Delhi were off to a strong start with skipper David Warner hitting 10 boundaries out of 12 in the powerplay.

Bengaluru, April 16 (Ians) Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach Shane Watson came in defence of Prithvi Shaw for his poor run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (Ipl), saying that a “player like Prithvi does not just fall out of a tree.”
In Saturday’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb), Shaw came in as an impact player and was run-out for a duck in the first over by a spectacular direct-hit from Rcb’s impact player Anuj Rawat.
The DC opener punched one to extra cover where Rawat dived to his right, got up instantly and scored a direct hit at the non-striker’s end as Shaw was found short.

The victory also means that Mumbai have got their first points on the board in the competition while Delhi faced their fourth consecutive loss of the tournament. Axar Patel and David Warner slammed contrasting fifties in Delhi’s 172 in 19.4 overs, while Anrich Nortje and Mustafizur Rahman were brilliant in their death overs bowling. But Tim David took Mumbai home on the last ball with Cameron Green giving him company.
Compared to Delhi’s 29/0, Mumbai had a blazing start by reaching 42/0 in their three overs. Rohit was at his vintage best, timing the ball well and picking the lengths very quickly in hitting two fours and a six in a 14-run opening over.
On the other hand, Ishan Kishan hit the ground running by smacking three boundaries through the off-side against Mustafizur. Nortje was smacked for two fours and a six, which Rohit elegantly whipped over wide long-on.

Guwahati, April 8 (Ians) The first over in both innings of the Rajasthan Royals-Delhi Capitals clash in Ipl 2023 at the Barsapara Cricket Ground on Saturday literally made the difference between the two teams apparent.

Though DC clawed back with three quick wickets in the middle overs, Shimron Hetmyer provided for the finishing touch with 38 not out to propel Rajasthan to 199/4. In reply,...

Guwahati, April 8 (Ians) Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner has won the toss and elected to bowl first against Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Rajasthan are coming off a five-run loss to Punjab Kings at this venue which happened a couple of days ago while Delhi are winless after losing their first two matches of Ipl 2023.
After winning the toss, Warner said Manish Pandey, Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell come in the playing eleven. There’s no Mitchell Marsh as he has flown back home to Perth for his wedding while Aman Khan, Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan are slotted in the substitutes for this game.
“Don’t know what’s gonna happen. Hopefully we will start well. Marsh has gone home to get married. All the best to him,” he said.

After suffering their second successive loss of the tournament in a six-wicket defeat to the Titans, Delhi’s assistant coach Ajit Agarkar admitted that the batting unit, which struggled to break the shackles throughout their innings, has to step up collectively for much better results, while solidly defending young batting duo of Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan in their struggles against quality fast bowling.
"They (Prithvi and Sarfaraz) have made runs in the past against fast bowling and in general, I don’t think we batted well, so why point out one or two guys? None of our top order really got going in both games. We’ve not had big runs at the top, which some of the other teams have and you can see the difference."
So there’s no point picking individuals. Collectively, we’ve not been good enough on both nights and we need to improve...

For Delhi, in middling innings, captain David Warner made 37 while his deputy Axar Patel smashed 36 as they managed to breach the 160-mark. Apart from Shami and Rashid picking 3-41 and 3-31 respectively, Alzarri Joseph dazzled with 2-29.
Shami got a bit of spice from the pitch in an eventful opening over. An away swinger against David Warner disturbed the off-stump, but the bail was unmoved. Though he also cut him in size, Shami was unable to find control, giving away seven wides.
Prithvi Shaw then took on Shami in his next over by flaying a cut over the slip cordon for four. But Shami had the last laugh by having Shaw caught on a pull at mid-on. The senior India pacer had more success with the new ball by castling Mitchell Marsh.

New Delhi, April 4 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against Delhi Capitals in Match Seven of Ipl 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Capitals are playing their first home game of the season after 2019 while the Titans are featuring in their first away match of the tournament, with the pitch described to be a flat one with a slight tinge of grass.
After winning the toss, Pandya said South Africa batter David Miller and uncapped India batter B. Sai Sudharsan come in for injured Kane Williamson, who is ruled out of the tournament, and all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
“Not sure how the wicket is going to play. Obviously losing Kane — we’re gutted. Especially for him. As a team, we can manage but are gutted for him. Not much talking in our team. Just about keeping things simple and focusing on controllable.
