The start of India off-spinner Jayant Yadav’s County Championship stint with Middlesex has been delayed due to visa issues, said the club on Monday. On September 1, Middlesex had announced that Yadav will be available for the club’s match against Essex at Chelmsford starting from September 4.
But Middlesex on Monday said Yadav has been unable to travel to the UK and join the club at Chelmsford due to a delay in the issuing of his work visa.
“The Club paid to expedite the application of Yadav’s visa and received confirmation from the UK Visa and Immigration Office on Friday 1st September that everything had been approved and issued.”
“The British Embassy however, in Delhi, did not release his travel documentation in time for the player to board the plane he was booked onto over the weekend. We are extremely disappointed with the delay in Yadav’s passport being returned,...

“I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race,” said Umesh on linking up with Essex.

Mumbai, Aug 6 (Ians) With the recent experimentation by the team management with the Indian playing XI giving mixed results, the senior national cricket selectors will be in a fix when they sit down to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and the Asian Games which follow it, which will be important stops on the journey to the Odi World Cup to be held later in the year.
The Icc Odi World Cup in October-November in India follows on the heels of the Asia Cup 2023, which will be held from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23-October 8. It is apparent that the selectors will be left with little time to settle on their World Cup squad.
Thus the Indian squad for the Asia Cup will virtually be the one that would also represent the country in the World Cup — barring minor tweaks due to injuries,...

New Delhi, Aug 1 (Ians) After Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were “rested” for the last two ODIs against West Indies, the fans expressed their displeasure and slammed the Bcci and the team management for their “bizarre” decisions.
Netizens raised questions, asking the Indian board and coach on why Rohit and Kohli were named in the Odi series when they are getting rested. “They should have picked another team then.”
However, one user said that the Bcci was under pressure from broadcasters to put Kohli and Rohit in the team. “Arre… broadcasters promo me kya daalenge fir.. Ad walon ko kaise convince karenge.”
“Interestingly, we have the Icc Odi World Cup this year and our main players are getting rested before that and not playing ODIs. Wow, Rahuld Dravid what’s happening.
“It made no sense to carry Rohit or Virat for the Odi series if they were not going to play.

Bridgetown, July 28 (Ians) During their five-wicket win over West Indies in the Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, India rejigged their batting line-up in a bid to experiment ahead of the World Cup in a modest chase of 115. That experiment saw Virat Kohli not batting at all, with Shardul Thakur batting at six while captain Rohit Sharma chose to come at seven.
For India, apart from presenting them a chance to seal the Odi series, it is also another opportunity for them to experiment from the second Odi at the same venue yet again and see where various players stand in the lead-up to the mega event.
Ishan Kishan did well as an opener in top-scoring with 52, but could bat in middle-order or maybe India can give a look-in to Sanju Samson. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja showed left-arm spin mastery to bamboozle West Indies, but whether the visitors give...

Bridgetown, July 26 (Ians) With just over two months left for the Men’s Odi World Cup to start, India will be aiming to restart and fine-tune their preparation for the marquee tournament when they face West Indies in the series opener starting on Thursday.
With many regulars of the Indian team still on the road to recovery from injuries of various kind, the series against the West Indies presents a chance for the likes of Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Umran Malik to strengthen their case for playing a home Odi World Cup.
With Shreyas Iyer out, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to be given a chance for batting at number four despite recording a hat-trick of ducks in the ODIs against Australia in March. In the absence of Kl Rahul, who’s on the road to recovery from a right thigh injury, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson will...

Port of Spain, July 20 (Ians) West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second Test of the two-game series at Queen’s Park Oval, here on Thursday.
Left-handed top-order batter Kirk McKenzie and right-arm seamer Mukesh Kumar are making their Test debuts for West Indies and India respectively. It is the 100th Test between West Indies and India, which coincides with Virat Kohli playing his 500th international match.
After winning the toss, Brathwaite said pacer Shannon Gabriel also comes back in the playing eleven, with no place for Raymon Reifer and Rahkeem Cornwall.
“Pitch has a bit of moisture which we want to use. We were decent bowling-wise, we need to continue being disciplined,” the West Indies captain said.

Roseau (Dominica), July 12 (Ians) Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja were among the wickets for India as the visitors pushed West Indies on the backfoot by reducing them to 68/4 in 28 overs at lunch on Day 1 of first Test at Windsor Park, here on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, West Indies openers captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul were solid against fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat. With the ball not providing them much swing, Brathwaite and Chanderpaul were able to get through the first half-hour without any major discomfort.
But Ashwin’s early entry dramatically changed the course of the session. The ace off-spinner began by castling Chanderpaul with a skiddy delivery coming from wide of crease in the 13th over, making him the first Indian bowler and fifth overall to dismiss a father-son duo in Test cricket.

Roseau (Dominica), July 12 (Ians) West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat first against India in the first Test of the two-game series at Windsor Park, here on Wednesday.
Left-handed batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan are making their Test debuts for India. While Jaiswal will open the batting alongside India captain Rohit Sharma, Kishan will bat in the middle-order and be the wicketkeeper too.
For the West Indies, left-handed batter and local lad Alick Athanaze is making his Test debut.
“Surface is generally dry, but there’s moisture in the first hour. We had a ten-day camp in Antigua. (Brian) Lara (performance mentor) was there, that was good for our young batters. We had seen ourselves in good positions in the last (two Wtc) cycles. What we need is consistency and putting it together. Want the boys to be positive,” said Brathwaite at the toss.

With pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah absent, Shami will have an important role to play in leading India’s charge with the ball in the Wtc Final. Shami was the leading wicket-taker in Ipl 2023 with 28 scalps, finding success by bowling majorly Test-match lengths.
Against Australia, Shami has picked 40 wickets from 11 Tests at an average of 31.27, with a career-best spell of 6-56. His record of playing Tests in England stands at 38 wickets in 13 games at an average of 40.52, with Shami yet to pick a five-wicket haul in the country.
"Shami impresses me a lot and I love how he keeps running in hard. He does a wonderful job for India. I love that he presents the seam, and releases the ball so well. His wrist and fingers are right behind the ball and you see the seam go all the way down the pitch and he gives the ball a chance to move off the seam.

Lucknow, May 1 (Ians) Lucknow Super Giants have been dealt with huge injury blows to their captain, opener K.L. Rahul and left-arm fast-bowler Jaydev Unadkat. On the last ball of the second over bowled by Marcus Stoinis during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul was chasing the ball to stop a boundary off Faf du Plessis.
But Rahul went down immediately as the ball went for four and was badly grimacing in pain after having injured his right leg. While attending to Rahul, the Lucknow support staff also called up a stretcher to take him off the field.
But in what was a small solace, Rahul went off the field with some support on both sides and didn’t need a stretcher. In his absence, left-arm-spin all-rounder Krunal Pandya has taken up leadership duties.

Mumbai, April 25 (Ians) Senior batter Ajinkya Rahane was on Tuesday recalled in India’s 15-member squad for the Icc World Test Championship final against Australia, scheduled to be played at The Oval from June 7 to 11.
The 34-year-old batter has been out of the India team since the Cape Town Test against South Africa last year, after an extended run of low scores, but injuries to key personnel and his own spectacular form in the ongoing Ipl 2023 has helped him make a comeback.
Playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Ipl 2023, Rahane has scored 209 runs in five matches so far, at an average of 52.25 and a strike-rate of 199.04. The right-hander batter also had a decent season for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 campaign, scoring 634 runs at 57.63 including two centuries.
Back in the India squad, Rahane could be a leading contender to take up the No.5 slot vacated by the injury-enforced absence of Shreyas Iyer.

Lucknow, April 22 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
A win for Lucknow at their home ground will take them to the top of the points table. Lucknow have won two of their three games at home in Ipl 2023. The pitch for Saturday’s match is the one used by Lucknow for their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 7, where they won by five wickets.
After winning the toss, Hardik said fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph misses out and left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad comes into the playing eleven. “Looks like a slow track, want to get the best out of it. There is no time to test our batters now.”
“On this wicket, the better option is to bat first. We’re not worried about our record while chasing.

New Delhi, Feb 19 (Ians) India captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first One-day International against Australia to be played in his hometown Mumbai on March 17 because of some family commitments, Bcci honorary secretary Jay Shah informed on Sunday.
Vice-captain Hardik Pandya, who led India in the last T20-i series against New Zealand, will lead the Odi side in Rohit’s absence, Shah said in a release on Sunday.
The selectors also called up left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja after his brilliant bowling in the two Tests against Australia. Axar Patel and K.L Rahul, who were rested for the New Zealand ODIs, were also brought back as K.S Bharat and Shahbaz Ahmed were left out.
Mohd Shami and Mohd Siraj along with Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik and Jaydev Unadkat along with Hardik Pandya will comprise the pace bowling component while Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Jadeja are the spinners in the side.

New Delhi, Feb 19 (Ians) The national selectors on Sunday retained under-fire opener K.L Rahul for the third and fourth Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series while also retaining middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who was included for the Delhi Test after recovering from an injury, and Jaydev Unadkat, who was released ahead of the second Test to play for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy final,
The decision to retain Rahul was not surprising after skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid expressed their support for the opener.
Since January 2022, Rahul has just one fifty-plus score while his last Test hundred came in December 2021 against South Africa. In the Delhi Test against Australia, Rahul was dismissed for 17 in the first innings and made just one in the chase of 115, coming after making a laborious 20 in Nagpur.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Geoff Lawson revealed that current head coach Andrew McDonald’s viewpoint of the side’s success in the upcoming four-match Test series against India is broadly based around the quality of fast bowling rather than the temptation to fight spin with spin in the subcontinental conditions.
India are the current holder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the last three series against Australia in 2017, 2018-19, and 2020-21. Australia, on the other hand, are aiming to win a Test series in India, starting from February 9 in Nagpur, after having done so last time in 2004.
“I caught up with Australian coach Andrew McDonald in a recreational setting last week, but we naturally talked a bit of cricket. His broad view of Australia’s potential success in the next four Test matches was based around the quality of his fast bowling rather than the temptation to fight spin with spin.

New Delhi, Jan 22 (Ians) Former India opener Wasim Jaffer thinks key players in the side must feature in the next round of Ranji Trophy instead of playing the dead rubber against New Zealand at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Tuesday, keeping in mind the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Odi series against New Zealand, which makes Tuesday’s match a dead rubber. Incidentally, on the same day, the final round of league matches in the Ranji Trophy will begin.
While Virat Kohli and Kl Rahul last played a Test match in December 2022 against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma was last seen playing in the red-ball format in March 2022 against Sri Lanka at Bengaluru.
Players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Jaydev Unadkat are already playing in the Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia starting from February 9 in Nagpur.

The recent success, as regards the selling of the Rights of Women’s Ipl cricket tournament, truly reflects the progress that has been made by both the Bcci and cricket as a sport, in India. The game of cricket is the true benefactor, as it smells as sweet when played by either men or women.

Dhaka, Dec 25 (Ians) A magnificent unbeaten 71-run partnership off 105 balls between Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer took India out from jaws to defeat and steered the visitors’ to a three-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
On day four, India were needing 100 runs with six wickets in hand. But Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets in the first hour to leave India in spot of bother at 74/7. The wicket-taking balls from Bangladesh were on straighter deliveries at a pitch which was offering huge assistance to spinners, making life difficult for India.
But Ashwin and Iyer, India’s last-recognised batting pair, defended solidly, mixed caution with aggression and then brought out a flurry of boundaries at the end to take the visitors’ over the line.
In a cracking finish at Dhaka, the Ashwin-Iyer partnership lasted 17.3 overs and scored...

Dhaka, Dec 23 (Ians) Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer slammed counter-attacking fifties to put India in an advantageous position on day two of second Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, here on Friday.
It was a day where Bangladesh took out India’s top three in the first session and then took out Virat Kohli quickly in the second session to leave them at 94/4. That’s when Pant and Iyer joined forces for an important 159-run stand for the fifth wicket, which made the difference for India in taking a sizable 87-run lead.
Though the duo fell short of their respective centuries, as Pant made 93 off 104 balls and Iyer scored 87 off 105 balls, the efforts from the left-right batting duo on a tough, deteriorating pitch, including making 140 runs in the second session at a run rate of 5.6.
Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto did well to negotiate six tricky overs before stumps.
