Ahmedabad, Feb 25 (Ians) India's spin bowlers exposed England batsmen's frailties on pitches that aid turn more than usual. England's mental fragility as well as their lack of skills were laid bare as slow bowlers Axar Patel and R Ashwin kept them under a tight leash with wicket-to-wicket line.
After their skipper Joe Root (5/8) and Jack Leach (4/54) had given them an opportunity to come back in the match, England batsmen approached their second innings like cat on a hot tin roof.
Patel picked two wickets in the very first over, on the first ball and the third ball. Zak Crawley was clueless about the length while Jonny Bairstow was bowled through the gate as he pre-meditated his defence to counter a turning delivery.
The India spinners, led by Patel bowled an immaculate line, not allowing runs that forced the English batsmen to make mistakes.

Chennai, Feb 16 (Ians) India's senior players, skipper Virat Kohli and R Ashwin have lavished praise on debutant Axar Patel, who became only the sixth Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul on debut, for showing no signs of nervousness in his first match. His haul helped India beat England by 317 runs in the second Test to bring the series level at 1-1.
"He was very keen to step onto the field, and as a left-arm spinner, when you get that kind of a pitch where it is turning square and he bowls so fast, he was just all smiles, he couldn't wait to get the ball in his hands," said skipper Kohli after the Test.
Patel, 27, was supposed to play the first match but could not as he had a niggle. Shahbaz Nadeem, who was in the reserves, replaced him.

Chennai, Feb 13 (Ians) Rohit Sharma scored a rapid 80 off 78 deliveries to take India to 106 for three wickets at lunch on the first day of the second Test, on Saturday.
On a pitch that aided turn from very early and on which left-arm spinner Jack Leach was introduced as early as the eighth over of the match, Sharma looked in control and took on the England attack to put India in the driver's seat before a couple of wickets late in the first session gave Joe Root's side some relief.
India had lost Shubman Gill early with the team total at zero. But then Sharma and No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara shared an 85-run partnership for the second wicket to help India move into commanding position. The partnership was dominated by Sharma as he unleashed his strokes.
However, just as they looked like they were taking the game away from England, the spinners got into action.

Chennai, Feb 12 (Ians) Skipper Virat Kohli's captaincy will be under scanner again as India will look to level the ongoing four-match series against England in the second Test beginning Saturday here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (Wtc) final.
India need to win two Test matches and also the series in order to face New Zealand in the Wtc final to be held at Lord's, London in June.
If England win the second Test, India will be out and the fight for the place in the final will be between Australia and England.
India under Kohli have lost two Tests in the last two months whereas they won two out of three Tests in Australia in Ajinkya Rahane's leadership in the same period.

Chennai, Feb 11 (Ians) The 227-run loss in the first Test to England may prompt the Indian team management to make changes in the bowling line-up. But with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja out injured due to a fractured thumb, India still have a tough task to pick the XI, especially their fourth and fifth bowlers.
On a pitch expected to be dry and slow, India may dish out four spinners, including all-rounder Washington Sundar who could play as a specialist batsman.
Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and off-spinner Sundar, the fourth and fifth bowlers, had copped criticism from the India captain Virat Kohli for leaking too many runs in the first Test.
While Sundar may still play because of his batting ability -- he made 85 not out in the second innings and could possibly be pushed up the order, Nadeem is likely to be left out.

Chennai, Feb 9 (Ians) India skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday lashed out on the quality of balls as well as the uneconomical bowling of spinners Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar following team's 227-run defeat in the first Test against England here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
England, after winning the toss, posted a massive first-innings score of 578, riding on a 218-run knock from skipper Joe Root and notable contributions of 87 and 82 from Dominic Sibley and Ben Stokes.
"It (wicket) was flat and slow. The quality of balls honestly wasn't something that we were pleased to see because that has been the issue in the past as well. Just for the ball to get destroyed in 60 overs is not something that you experience as a Test side and it is not something any Test side could be prepared for. England started off their second innings on the worst possible note as they lost opener Rory Burns on the very first ball bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin. The ball turned sharply taking the edge of the bat of Burns and went straight into the hands of Ajinkya Rahane at the slips.
Dominic Sibley (0 not out) and Daniel Lawrence (0 not out) then made sure the visitors didn't lose any further wickets in the two overs bowled by Ashwin and Shahbaz Nadeem.
Earlier in the day, India got bundled out for 337, thus conceding a massive first innings lead of 241 runs in reply to England's 578. However, the visitors decided not to enforce the follow-on.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) In a video that is being circulated on social media, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj is seen grabbing spinner Kuldeep Yadav by the neck after first day's play in the first India-England Test here.
Although both players are seen in the background as the camera is focused on India coach Ravi Shastri in the short clip, it was enough to capture the attention of fans on Twitter since Friday.
"What did siraj do here to kuldeep," said the Twitter handle of a fan page of India captain Virat Kohli while tweeting the clip from the live broadcast.
Another tweet from the same handle later asked people to not take the video too seriously and that the two are "best friends".
Both Siraj and Kuldeep were not selected for the first Test.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) The 19 no-balls that Indians have bowled so far in England's first innings of the first Test here were the most by the team in 10 years. In 2010, the Indians had bowled 16 no balls in Sri Lanka's first innings in the third Test in Colombo.
This is also the most no balls bowled by any team in Test cricket since Sri Lankans bowled 21 against hosts Bangladesh in the second Test in Chattogram in 2014.
While India won the Colombo Test in 2010 despite the 16 no balls, the result of the ongoing first Test against England is awaited. At close of play on the second day at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium here, England scored 555 for eight wickets, and are expected to bat as many overs as possible on Sunday.
India have pressed into service six bowlers so far, and they have bowled 180 overs.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) The flat wicket at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday made it hard for the Indian bowlers to go for the wickets and instead they have been forced to bowl defensively and wait for the batsmen to make mistakes, said India left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.
Nadeem took the wickets of Joe Root and Ben Stokes but not before the two shared a 124-run partnership - out of which Ben Stokes made 82, to drive England ahead. The visitors finished on 555 for eight wickets at the end of the second day.
"To bowl in the right areas was the plan (on this pitch). If you go for wickets, then you tend to give runs. The plan was to bowl in good areas and if the batsmen play some bad shots then you have a chance to get wickets. My plan was also the same," said Nadeem who admitted to...

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) England all-rounder Ben Stokes heaped praise on his captain Joe Root after he scored his second double century in three matches on the second day of the first Test against India here on Saturday.
"He makes us all feel pretty rubbish, how he makes batting look. I was quite surprised when he ran down the wicket and smashed a six for the double," said Stokes after play.
"He is in phenomenal form. Makes it look very, very easy, the way he plays spin and dominates spin. Is incredible to watch. I don't think we have had an England batsman ever play spin the way he does. He's got an answer and option for everything thrown at him. He is such a delight to watch," he said.
Root batted for nearly six full sessions for his 218, scored off 377 balls, before falling to left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) Skipper Joe Root scored his fifth double century -- the first by a batsman playing his 100th Test -- to lead England to 555 for eight wickets at stumps on the second day of the first Test against India at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium here on Saturday.
Root, whose double ton was also the first by an overseas cricketer in India in over 10 years, was ably supported by Ben Stokes (82) as the two added 124 for the fourth wicket. At close, Dominic Bess was batting on 28 and Jack Leach was on six. The two tail-enders added an unbeaten 30 in 10.3 overs.
India picked four wickets in the last session, with pace bowler Ishant Sharma getting two wickets -- Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer -- off two balls, but Bess and Leach ensured that Virat Kohli's boys will have to return on the third morning, something that Root wanted.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) England captain Joe Root (batting 156) and all-rounder Ben Stokes (batting 63) added 92 runs in the first session to help England move to 355 for three at lunch on the second day of the second Test on Saturday.
Stokes, who took guard at the start of the second day's play after opener Dominic Sibley was dismissed in the last over of the first day, made his unbeaten 63 off 98 deliveries with two sixes and nine fours.
The England big-hitter survived a couple of chances with off-spinner R Ashwin dropping a tough chance off his own bowling and Cheteshwar Pujara dropping him at mid-wicket off the bowling of left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.
India also wasted a chance to run out Root too as Washington Sundar's throw was wide off the wicketkeeper.
Root built on his overnight unbeaten 128 to rack up his third 150-plus score in succession following his 228 and 186 in Sri Lanka.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) A desperate India wasted two reviews in successive overs of the first session as England, through the century stand between skipper Joe Root and Ben Stokes, piled on the agony during the second day of the first Test.
India took reviews in the 108th and 109th overs but both of them were turned down.
In the 107th over, off-spinner R Ashwin appealed for leg-before as the ball popped up and fell wide of wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. Replays clearly showed the ball had hit the gloves before popping up in the air.
In the very next over, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem appealed for leg-before against England skipper Joe Root but on review showed that the ball was missing the stumps.
The reviews lost were apart from the catches that India dropped.

New Delhi, Feb 5 (Ians) India missed Ravindra Jadeja's accuracy on Friday, the first day of the first Test against England as neither his replacement left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem nor off-spinner Washington Sundar, who starred in India's win over Australia in the fourth Test Down Under last month, could control the flow of runs.
The easy drizzle of runs saw Ashwin have a rare off-day on his home ground at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
Jadeja, whose Ipl home base has also been this ground for a major part of his T20 league career, is not in the squad for the first two Tests as he is nursing a thumb injury that he sustained on the tour of Australia.

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) Despite India bowling coach Bharat Arun saying that spinner Kuldeep Yadav would be getting an opportunity in the home Tests against England, India called up left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem from the reserves to replace Axar Patel for the first Test here on Friday.
Kuldeep, a Chinaman bowler, was benched in all four Tests in Australia and has not played a Test for over two years since taking a five-wicket haul in the fourth and final Test against host Australia in Sydney in 2018-19.
"In India when we play these four Tests, it will be his time," Arun had said on arrival from Australia.
India skipper Virat Kohli said on the eve of the first Test that Kuldeep not playing Tests for over two years was partly because there was no cricket during the Covid-enforced lockdown. He also said that Kuldeep's chance would come.

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) England captain Joe Root's third consecutive Test century (128 batting) and his 200-run stand for the third wicket with opener Dom Sibley helped the visitors reach 263 for three wickets at stumps on the first day of their first Test against India at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.
Root became the ninth batsman to slam a century in his 100th Test.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sibley on 87 off the last ball of the day to help India end it on a positive note for themselves. However, Sibley and Root's partnership, coupled with a 63-run opening stand between the former and Rory Burns helped England take the upper hand on the first day of the Test.
England won the toss and chose to bat at the Chepauk Stadium. India opted to play three spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Nadeem along with two fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Bumrah.

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Friday scalped his first Test wicket on the Indian soil when he got the wicket of Dominic Sibley as England reached 67/2 at Lunch on Day One of the first Test here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
Lawrence, who came into bat after opener Rory Burns' dismissal, went back to the dressing room without troubling the scorers as he got out lbw against Bumrah. Before the ongoing first Test, Bumrah, 27, had played 17 Tests, all overseas, in which he had picked 79 wickets.
Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat, Burns and Sibley provided England with a solid start as they brilliantly tackled the two Indian pacers -- Ishant Sharma and Bumrah.
The duo batted cautiously at the start but once they got settled, they collected runs at a decent rate and put pressure on the Indian bowlers. They stitched a 63-run stand...

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat in the first Test against India beginning on Friday here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
"We are going to bat first. We will try and get the best of this wicket with the bat, make a good first innings score and try and take the team forward," said Root.
"I do enjoy playing cricket in India. We are looking forward to a great series. We have to play at our best and we are very confident," he added.
For India, left-arm spinner Axar Patel has been ruled out of the Test. Axar complained of pain in his left knee during Team India's optional training session on Thursday, Bcci earlier informed in a statement.
India are going on with three spinners -- Ravichandran Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar -- while Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack.

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) Left-arm spinner Axar Patel missed a chance to make his Test debut on Friday after he was ruled out of the first Test between India and England which began on Friday at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium here due to a knee injury.

Shahbaz Nadeem and Rahul Chahar, who have been training with the team as part of the standby group of players, were added to the squad. And Nadeem was included in the playing XI in the match where England opted to bat.

New Delhi, Jan 26 (Ians) In December 2016, when England last travelled to India for a Test series, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin combined to capture 54 of the 93 English wickets to fall as the team romped to a 4-0 series win in the five-Test series.
This time, though, Jadeja's absence from the first two Tests due to a thumb fracture will mean India will have to pair either one, or two, of Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel with Ashwin against the visiting England side.
Jadeja, a left-arm spinner, has taken 157 of his 220 wickets in India. He has bagged seven of his nine five-wicket hauls at home. The Saurashtra spinner's ability to pick wickets with variations in pace and accuracy has made him successful on Indian pitches on which there is turn right from the first day of matches.

New Delhi, Jan 23 (Ians) Members of the Indian cricket team will assemble in Chennai on January 27 ahead of the first Test against England that begins at the M. Chidambaram Stadium on February 5.
It has been learnt that the players would reach Chennai in batches -- from different cities -- and enter the bio-bubble from January 27. They will undergo a week-long quarantine during which the Indian team management will devise its strategy for the series.
The England team will also enter the bio-bubble from January 27 when they arrive after completing the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle that ends on January 26.
However, players coming to India from England, like all-rounder Ben Stokes, pace bowler Jofra Archer and opener Rory Burns, will arrive a bit earlier as they will land straight from England. The trio is not part of the England team that is currently touring Sri Lanka for the Tests.

New Delhi, Jan 20 (Ians) Fifty-seven players have been released by eight Indian Premier League (Ipl) franchises ahead of the 2021 auction, to be held next month. They include Mumbai Indians' fast bowling great Lasith Malinga, former Rajasthan Royals captain Steve Smith, Chennai Super Kings (Csk) off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, and Kings XI Punjab all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) have released the most number of players, 10, though it is noteworthy that among them are wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, who announced his retirement from all cricket recently, and veteran South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn, who had opted out of the Ipl in the first week of this month.
Delhi Capitals said in a statement that they have traded all-rounders Harshal Patel and Daniel Sams to Rcb. They are, however, yet to name the players that would possibly come from Rcb as part of the trading window, which is open until about a week before the auction.

Abu Dhabi, Nov 7 (Ians/GloFans) SunRisers Hyderabad (Srh) were not considered title contenders for much of the season but their recent performances indicate that they have found a winning formula, which they would hope will continue working when they face the struggling Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second Qualifier of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) here on Sunday.
DC have been on the wane since their brilliant performances in the first half of the season and go into this match on the back of a heavy 57-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians (Mi) in the first Qualifier.
The David Warner-led Srh were struggling to find the right balance in the first half of the season, having managed just three wins in their first seven games. However, the 'Orange Army' regrouped at the right time and ticked all the boxes to smoothly enter the playoffs.

Holder was the man who took out the openers while Finch fell to Shahbaz Nadeem. Holder also dismissed Shivam Dube while Rashid Khan went wicketless but conceded just 22 runs in his four overs.

Srh went on to dominate their remaining league matches and stormed into Indian Premier League (Ipl) playoffs on Tuesday with a 10-wicket win over top-ranked Mumbai Indians (Mi).
