“Don’t Look Up” and “Coda” have won the top feature film awards from the Writers Guild of America, which held its annual WGA Awards on Sunday evening.
On the heels of its Producers Guild Award victory on Saturday, “Coda” kicked off the show by winning the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay. The category also included “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “tick, tick…Boom!” and “West Side Story” — but two of the biggest challengers to “Coda” in the Oscar race for adapted screenplay, “The Power of the Dog” and “The Lost Daughter,” were not eligible for the award because of WGA regulations.
In the Best Original Screenplay category, “Don’t Look Up” scored a surprise victory over “Licorice Pizza,” which was favored to take the award, and “King Richard.” Two other Oscar nominees, “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World,” were ineligible.

You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.

Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?
“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. But if they both prevail, they will have bagged the two top industry prizes as they won at BAFTA last weekend right in the middle of final Oscar voting (it ends Tuesday).

The world has changed but Larry David hasn’t. That’s the best possible news for the legion fanbase of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the comedian’s long-running half-hour series. HBO dropped the trailer for its upcoming Season 11 on Wednesday, October 13, featuring guest stars Patton Oswalt, Vince Vaughn, Jon Hamm, Seth Rogen, and more.
The series originally debuted in 2001 and has run for more than 100 episodes. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” stars “Seinfeld” co-creator David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his fictionalized life. The series also stars Susie Essman (“Broad City”), Jeff Garlin (“The Goldbergs”), Cheryl Hines (“Suburgatory”), J.B. Smoove (“Mapleworth Murders”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”) and Richard Lewis (“Anything But Love”).
Per HBO, the comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one’s day-to-day life — a cold cup of coffee, a stained shirt, a missing toothbrush — can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

The Emmy Awards ballot lists 213 episodes (from 118 series), so there will be seven nominees this year under the new rules. There were seven for the first time in the category’s history last year:

Evan Daugherty, who is best known for penning blockbuster fare like “Divergent” and “Snow White and the Huntsman,” is taking a crack at the short-form thriller format.
Quibi is developing “Horror Accidental,” a “terrifyingly addictive” psychological thriller anthology written and directed by Daugherty. The series is based on the Japanese TV drama of the same name, which ran across two parts in 2013 and 2016.
This represents the second Daugherty project announced this year, after news emerged that Sony Pictures is in early development on a reboot of the “Anaconda” franchise, with Daugherty on board as a writer. His most recent writing credit was on 2018’s “Tomb Raider” starring Alicia Vikander.

Green Book and Dumb and Dumber director Peter Farrelly is developing a new comedy series for the upcoming streaming service Quibi that will center around suicide. Because… suicide is funny? Suicide is definitely an odd subject matter for a comedy, but the series will involve an uplifting story and message.
The show will be called The Now and the story “centers around a guy who is about to commit suicide when he finds out from his mother that his brother just committed suicide and his dad committed suicide in the past as well.” It’s explained that the series’ central character has to “learn to live life for today, in the now.”
There are people out there that might be able to relate to and enjoy a series like this. It’s being produced by Steve Golin and his Anonymous Content, which also produces Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, which also deals with suicide.

THR are reporting that Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the men responsible for writing the breakout zombie comedy Zombieland, will make their directorial debut with Doc & Howie.
Written by Steve Leff (TV’s Two and a Half Men), Doc & Howie centers on two slackers who refuse to help an elderly woman carry her groceries up a flight of stairs. That leads to them accidentally killing her, but while they panic about the repercussions, the incident allows them to meet the dead women’s sexy granddaughters.
Production is likely to get underway in the new year.
As well as signing on to direct Doc & Howie, Wernick and Reese have also written scripts for Deadpool, the GI Joe sequel and sold a sci-fi spec called Earth vs. Moon.

Next up for the writing duo is directing their first movie - the Steve Leff-penned comedy Doc and Howie - which will follow the title characters "accidentally kill an elderly woman when they neglect to help her carry her groceries up the stairs" and then meet the old lady's hot granddaughters and "struggle with the dilemma of whether to tell the women the truth." Montecito Picture Co. is hoping to start production next summer, with Paramount likely distributing. The...

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been pretty hot in Hollywood since their screenplay for Zombieland was turned into one of the most entertaining and financially successful zombie movies of the decade. Now the writers are attached to make their directorial debut with another comedy about death, Doc and Howie, to be produced by Montecito Picture Co. [THR]
Originally titled Doc and Howie Whack a Granny, the film is about two guys, Doc and Howie, who accidentally kill an old lady when they don’t help her carry her groceries up a perilous flight of stairs. As the comedy gods would have it, the granny’s smoking hot granddaughters show up, and the boys find themselves in the unique position of wanting to seduce the very women whose grandmother they mistakenly killed.

Zombieland screenwriters, Rhett Reese and Paul Wenick, have officially signed on to direct their first feature film called Doc and Howie, which was formerly called Doc and Howie Whack a Granny.
The story follows the two title characters as they accidentally kill an elderly woman when they neglect to help her carry her groceries up the stairs. In a fortuitous twist, the incident brings them into contact with the woman’s hot granddaughters, and they struggle with the dilemma of whether to tell the women the truth.
Sounds like this could be a fun little dark comedy. Steve Leff wrote the original screenplay, which ended up being one of the “most liked” scripts on last year’s screenwriter Black List.
It's always interesting to see screenwriters move into the directors chair. Just because they can write a good movie doesn't mean they can direct one, but this film doesn't sound like anything too difficult.

Now this is an interesting turn of events. Screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote Zombieland and are working on the new G.I. Joe sequel and Deadpool scripts as well as the Cowboy Ninja Viking adaptation at Disney, are to make their feature directing debut a script that, oddly, is not their own. THR's RiskyBiz reports that the project is a comedy called Doc and Howie, which was shortened from its original longer descriptive title Doc and Howie Whack a Granny when it was on the Black List. TV writer & producer Steve Leff wrote the original screenplay. Interested to see what these guys can do as directors next. Described as being in the tone of Harold and Kumar, Doc and Howie is about two guys - Doc and Howie - who accidentally kill an elderly woman when they neglect to help her carry her groceries up the stairs.
