With only 11 days left in the month, January cinema continues its two traditions. And no, it’s not about drafty theatres. As many moviegoers bemoan, the wintery time is often a “dumping ground” for flicks that don’t quite have the needed “hook” to send folks trudging through the snow to the multiplex. Last weekend’s big releases weren’t made available to us, though the previous week’s “biggie” M3GAN did well with the public and the reviewers. The other tradition is the release to smaller markets of serious “award bait” films, and this is one of three today. It’s got a big “pedigree” cast with a few Oscar winners. And it’s the follow-up to the writer/director’s big award-winner from a couple of years ago, so hopes are high that he’ll grab some more gold with The Son.
As opposed to that former...

Hugh Jackman became a movie star with Wolverine in the first “X-Men” movie more than 20 years ago, slashing his way to blockbuster visibility with a role that continues to dominate his career. Part of that is because even fans of Jackman’s musical talents closely associate him with a scowling mutant, and rather than dispelling that perception, he simply invented another persona alongside it as a song-and-dance man. He’s played Peter Allen in “The Boy From Oz,” P.T. Barnum in “The Greatest Showman” and, most recently, Professor Harold Hill in the hit new Broadway production of “The Music Man,” but he’s never played Hugh Jackman.
“When I was getting into this business, the playbook for being a movie star was being mysterious,” the 53-year-old actor said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Don’t let anybody in. Leave them wanting more. Don’t reveal things. Project a certain image.

Welcome to Ground Zero for ‘Committed Cinema’ Italian style. Director Giuiano Montaldo filmed his dream project on location in Ireland and a bit in Boston, with top stars Gian Maria Volontè and Riccardo Cucciolla. In one of the highest-profile American ‘media’ trials ever the famed immigrants Sacco and Vanzetti were tried for a crime but convicted by politics: even the judge asserted they were guilty by definition. Montaldo shows how wrongly justice can be served without whitewashing the defendants. UK actors Cyril Cusack and Milo O’Shea up the performance level, and the Ennio Morricone / Joan Baez songs have kept the film alive.

Ivanhoe Pictures, which produced “Crazy Rich Asians,” has partnered with Jeffrey Sharp and Sharp Independent Pictures to finance and co-produce “The Baccarat Queen” about Chinese gambler Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun.
The project is inspired by Michael Kaplan’s article “The Baccarat Machine,” published in Cigar Aficionado, about Sun amassing millions of dollars of winnings by teaming with “King of Poker” Phil Ivey and using a technique known as edge sorting — recognizing the use of playing cards in which the edges on either side are unevenly cut by fractions of an inch.
Ivanhoe plans to develop a predominately English-language film featuring Asian characters. Ivanhoe and Sharp will produce.
“‘The Baccarat Queen’ is a truly captivating story that will feature a diverse international cast, a goal that Ivanhoe continues to pursue as global storytellers,” Ivanhoe Pictures president John Penotti said. “We are thrilled to partner with Sharp as we tell this exciting,...

Exclusive: “The way we treat mentally ill in this country is insane.” That’s how one psychiatrist starkly describes the state of affairs in America’s broken mental health system, which is put under the microscope in Bedlam, a documentary directed by psychiatrist-filmmaker Kenneth Rosenberg. The pic is having its world premiere later this month at the Sundance Film Festival.
Check out the trailer that offers the first look at the docu, which bows in Park City in the fest’s U.S. Documentary Competition section. It will also air likely later this year as part of PBS’ Independent Lens series.
Rosenberg, fueled by his own sister’s battles with mental illness, captures footage shot over a five-year period at a Los Angeles County psych ER, revealing the sometimes horrific reality of a deinstitutionalized system in which emergency rooms often provide the only refuge for the severely mentally ill who need care.

September is here again, and it's time to delve into the cinematic bounty of the Wavelengths section of the Toronto International Film Festival, that rambunctious and idiosyncratic corner of the Reitman Machine largely cordoned off from commercial concerns and set aside for lovely and sometimes difficult film art. Despite the ever-changing profile of Tiff, stalwart programmer Andréa Picard has [cue needle-scratching-record sound] What? Yes, last year at this time, the avant-garde community thought we were seeing Ms. Picard leaving this position behind. Fortunately for us all, Tiff won her back.
And this is where things get interesting. Starting with this 2012 edition of the festival, the Wavelengths section is a much more broadly based, festival-wide category. In essence, it now subsumes the old Visions designation, which was Tiff’s home for formally challenging, feature-length arthouse fare. This merger, which may seem like a bit of a shotgun wedding to some, does in fact make sense.
