- On 14 May 1976, an edition of the BBC 1 Six O'Clock News that he was reading was faded out early, euphemistically because of "technical problems", after he began slurring his words. He was reading a story about the monthly Trade Figures and stumbled over the numbers before ad-libbing "... and the trade figures are an awful lot". Many viewers phoned in to complain that Woods was drunk, but the official explanation was that it was a side-effect of a hay-fever drug that he had taken.
