Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died at the age of 56.
According to Smash Mouth’s manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell “passed peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho on Monday, September 4th.
Harwell recently began hospice care due to liver failure. Additionally, he suffered from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy.
Born January 9th, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, Steven Scott Harwell actually began his career as a rapper. His group Freedom of Speech (F.O.S.) recorded one song, “Big Black Boots,” that earned them some local radio play and scored Harwell a manager before he set his sights on alternative rock.
Harwell formed Smash Mouth in 1994, teaming with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle. Their debut album, Fush Mu Yang, arrived three years later, and featured the single “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which hit No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

During the development of “Shrek,” the creators did not consider what might appeal to children.
“Andrew [Adamson, co-director] and I, we didn’t have kids,” co-director Vicky Jenson says. “We were making a movie that we would go see.”
When it came to the songs, the overarching mission was the similar, says the film’s music supervisor, Marylata Elton says. “We were just trying to make a great movie,” she says. “We weren’t thinking about a soundtrack at all.”
Two months after the movie premiered on April 22, 2001, “Shrek (Music from the Original Motion Picture)” hit No. 28 on the Billboard 200 and later scored a Grammy nomination. Since then, the “Shrek” soundtrack has earned a place in the pop culture zeitgeist to the point that Universal Music Enterprises released a vinyl edition in 2019.

Smash Mouth’s “All Star” has followed you incessantly for the last two decades. If you’re under the age of 30, it’s a part of the fabric of your life as much as it’s a strand of the DNA that keeps the internet funny and weird. But before “All Star” was an inescapable hit, or the anthem for a misanthropic, titular green ogre in Dreamworks’ mega-hit Shrek, or the inspiration for countless memes on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and TikTok today, it began as a chance for Smash Mouth to prove themselves.

Smash Mouth bassist Paul De Lisle has reportedly been accused of domestic violence by his wife. However, the musician has stated that it is he who is the victim of abuse from Mary DeLisle, reports TMZ. The pair are said to have both obtained restraining orders against each other, while both accusing their partner of domestic abuse. Mary De Lisle was granted a restraining order against the bassist in December, claiming that he "called me a c*** and told me to get out of his house, he threatened to kick my teeth in". She added: "[He] has slapped me in the head and back, thrown objects at me, locked me in a closet, locked me out of the house, broken down doors to get to me, pinned me on the ground and sat (more)...
