As one of the longer-running shows on Syfy, The Magicians has delivered plenty of entertainment with its humor, its universal themes, and its spellbinding goddamn magic. Although it has not been renewed for a sixth season, cancellation feels like a harsh term for the end of this show, especially since part of its story overlaps with the final book of Lev Grossman’s trilogy from which the series is adapted. With that in mind, we spoke to all three of the showrunners from the past seasons to get a sense of the conclusion and look back on the accomplishments of this great series.
Den Of Geek: Was there a sense that, even if you had been renewed, this was one last chance to adapt the big events of The Magician’s Land?

The Magicians turns in a messy but fun episode that drops a few compelling bombshells during a more chaotic than usual narrative.

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 4
The Magicians doesn’t do anything halfway, but unfortunately that principle also applies to its missteps, of which “Magicians Anonymous” is one. Where the series is usually able to weave together disparate storylines to create a cohesive thematic tapestry, this episode felt oddly disjointed. It was almost as if the narrative itself was akin to the brown bunny in the Etheric Realm, jumping from story to story with dizzying disorientation while admittedly charming us along the way. The installment was redeemed somewhat by significant insights into the apocalypse problem, Penny’s mysterious signal, and the troubles in Fillory, but fans are used to cleaner storytelling in this show.
That’s not to say it wasn’t a fun ride,...

This post contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of The Magicians, and for the third season to date.

The Magicians season 4 places magic under the authoritarian rule of the Order, and showrunner John McNamara explains the why and how.
When The Magicians season 4 begins on January 23, 2019, it will return to a world that is thankful to have magic back and terrified to have it taken away again. According to showrunner John McNamara, this atmosphere of fear is the perfect breeding ground for fascist rule, and the Library, and Mageina Tovah’s Zelda in particular, is more than happy to step into the role of the benevolent but controlling protector of magic.
McNamara spoke to us from the set in Vancouver about how this new world order snuck up on The Magicians fans and on the characters themselves. “Germany didn't happen overnight in the 1920s and '30s. France didn't fall under fascist rule overnight,” he reminded us. “It's always a series of very small choices.

While the season-long quest for all of the Seven Keys is technically over, the ordeal for Brakebill’s erstwhile students is not. In the Season 3 finale of “The Magicians,” Quentin (Jason Ralph) and his friends were just about to succeed in restoring magic to the world when the faction representing the Librarian (Mageina Tovah) activated the fairy-powered Syphon device and diverted the magic to the Neitherworld Library.
Now, instead of having free-flowing magic, it’s so closely rationed that Brakebills instructors can barely perform simple demonstrations. Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy), who had betrayed Quentin & Co. to help the Librarians, is similarly frustrated with his limited access to magic. The timing couldn’t be worse because an all-powerful demon only known as the Monster or Thing has been unleashed upon the world with no one the wiser. The Monster is “something that simply wants…...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Magicians” episode “Six Short Stories About Magic.”]
As with many of Marlee Matlin’s gigs on TV, her role as Harriet on “The Magicians” wasn’t written with a deaf actress in mind. But once she landed the job, the show adjusted to reflect her unique qualities, such as incorporating more of her dry humor into the dialogue. On Wednesday’s episode, however, her deafness was the inspiration for a full storyline told from her point of view, complete with the audio tweaked to approximate for viewers her more limited hearing.
In “Six Short Stories About Magic,” which was written by series co-creator Sera Gamble and David Reed, it’s revealed that Harriet is the grown daughter of the Neitherworld Librarian, Zelda (Mageina Tovah). While her mother is content to work in the confines of the temporally slow library, safeguarding all the magical tomes, Harriet had always sought adventure in the outside world,...

A review of tonight's "You're the Worst" coming up just as soon as I'm in a war with an autistic kid from Sweden who keeps blocking me on Instagram... "You're the Worst" has a pretty small regular cast by modern TV comedy standards(*), but a good-sized and robust collection of recurring characters. "Dead Inside" doesn't put them all on display — Sam and his crew don't come to the get-together party, and Vernon arrives without Becca Barbara so he can be unencumbered to pursue a friendship agenda with Jimmy — but it puts the bulk of the show's recurring cast, including new addition Mageina Tovah as Paul's delightfully-named girlfriend Amy Cadingle, under one roof to bounce off each other in amusing ways. (Though the episode's funniest gag — Paul recounting the increasingly-horrifying story of how his friend Connor's wife died — took place before the party sequence.) (*) Ignoring "Louie," of course, because "Louie" is...

Over the course of its first season, "You're the Worst" — a romantic comedy about two terrible human beings (played by Chris Geere and Aya Cash) who would vomit at the thought that they are the hero and heroine of a romantic comedy — went from a show I felt pretty ambivalent about to one of my favorite shows on TV. It's been nearly a year since the last original episode aired on FX, in part because the show has moved over to the younger-skewing Fxx channel(*), but based on the new season's first two episodes (it premieres tomorrow night at 10:30), the wait was worth it. (*) Every mention of the network shift brings with it some doomsday theory about how FX is sending the show to Fxx to kill it. All that paranoia seems rooted entirely in the failure of "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell" when it made the switch,...

Chicago – John Cusack is in a very bad mood. Not even a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner can melt his icily grim disposition, as he speeds through traffic, shouts expletives at random extras and takes part in several terse phone conversations (hopefully with his agent). Of course, if I was an A-grade actor trapped in Z-grade dreck, I’d be peeved too.
Morgan O’Neill’s bargain basement thriller, “The Factory,” continues Cusack’s curious descent into grisly schlock destined for a direct-to-video release. As grossly miscast as the actor may have been in James McTeigue’s dreadful “The Raven,” the role at least allowed Cusack to exude some semblance of dry, deadpan wit. “The Factory” merely requires him to appear miserable, and suffice it to say that the actor’s misery is wholly convincing.

Serial killers have long been the stuff of which nightmares are made. The serial killer sub-genre of horror has brought us some amazingly memorable characters that still haunt us to this day. On February 19th Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will bring us a new name in fear with The Factory.
Starring John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter as detectives tracking a murderer, The Factory is set in the bitter cold of a Buffalo winter. A great place to hunt a hunter. And to celebrate the release of this newest addition to the sub-genre, we've compiled a list of the Top 11 Movie Serial Killers.
There is certainly a long list of names to choose from, but we narrowed the field a bit by limiting it to those who were just regular human people. No supernatural involvement here, just a person or group of people who've gone off the deep end and made...

Shameless 2.02 "I'll Light A Candle For You Every Day" Review
Shameless season 2 stumbles upon its third entry with this week’s "I'll Light A Candle For You Every Day," as Frank Gallagher continues wooing the ailing Dottie (Molly Price), while Fiona flirts with disaster by meetingup with her married high school crush Craig (Taylor Kinney). Unlike last week's "Summer Loving," this week's Shameless breaks the bank a bit on asking us to accept Frank's horrible behavior, however entertaining.
There’s a big gap between comically cruel, and just plain despicable. I’m thinking of your Benders, your Al Bundys, your Barney Stinsons, those with inherently selfish behavior but with enough good and self-awareness to keep us empathizing with them through their worst acts.
This fine balance is something Showtime has yet to achieve with William H. Macy’s Frank Gallagher in Shameless. Sure we’ll see him look out for his children now and again,...

American Horror Story Episodes 1.01, “Pilot”/1.02, “Home Invasion”
Written by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk
Directed by Ryan Murphy (1.01) and Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (1.02)
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
The creators of FX’s new American Horror Story have already crammed two seasons’ worth of story arcs into the series’ first two episodes. Unlike some of today’s more critically-acclaimed dramas, “Horror Story” moves with a frenetic pace, devoting only a few seconds to any one shot. At times it works. Many times it doesn’t. Regardless of the obvious pacing problems, the show still proves very entertaining.
The pilot opens in 1978, introducing the first, regular character, Adelaide (Jamie Brewer), an ominous girl who with Down’s syndrome playing in front of an abandoned house in the suburbs. She warns a pair of approaching twin brothers not to enter the house. Wielding baseball bats, they intend to wreak havoc on the empty home.

Way back in 1968, two young nurses Maria and Gladys experience an American Horror Story of their own when they find themselves conned by an apparently injured man, seeing blood on his forehead they allow him inside the house. Once his ruse is uncovered, the man quickly knocks young Maria out, and drags her more portly roommate upstairs. Once Maria comes to, the man forces her to put on a traditional nurses’ outfit, mocks her beliefs in Jesus, hogties her, and ultimately stabs her repeatedly through the back! Now that’s just being bad company.

Greta Gerwig is not your typical romantic comedy lead. She's far too natural, earthy and relatable.
The 27-year-old is one of many reasons why the Russell Brand-starring remake "Arthur" is primed to charm moviegoers: As Naomi, the tour guide Arthur's loaded playboy falls for, it's amazing just how much more attractive the option she becomes over the more traditional Tinseltown star/adversary Jennifer Garner.
The ascent to Hollywood leading lady has been swift for Gerwig, who only three years ago was acting in micro-budgeted "mumblecore" films. She first garnered widespread acclaim opposite Ben Stiller in last year's indie dramedy "Greenberg," and got her rom-com feet wet with a supporting turn in January's "No Strings Attached."
It's far too easy to look for comparisons when trying to describe Gerwig's physical appeal – in fact the majority of comments on her IMDb message board begin with "Looks like…" Naturally, we asked...

Thomas Jane, Anne Heche, Jane Adams, and Rebecca Creskoff, the four lead cast of HBO's "Hung" gathered at Paramount Studios to premiere the second season. Supporting cast such as Charlie Saxton, Loren Lester, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Eddie Jemison and Gregg Henry also attended the occasion which is special in terms of its setting.
Instead of using the classic red carpet, the organizers laid out a green grass carpet which resembles a football field although Ray's profession is as a basketball coach. Jane, perhaps triggered by the fancy and comfortable landing, took off his shoes while walking for the photo call. He, nevertheless kept the toe socks on.
Guest stars list is filled by HBO-associated stars such as Michelle Forbes, Perrey Reeves and Mageina Tovah. Heche in particular arrived at the venue accompanied by lover James Tupper.

We all love a bit of John Cusack don’t we? His most recent movie, Hot Tub Time Machine was a little gem from struggling movie house, MGM. I guess if they’d made more movies like that one, they wouldn’t be in the massive financial difficulty that they now face.
