The Jackass series debuted on MTV in 2000, quickly becoming one of the most popular television shows. It followed the antics of a group of friends as they engaged in outrageous stunts, pranks, and dangerous physical challenges. The show cast included Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-o, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Dave England, Preston Lacy, and Ryan Dunn.
Despite parental and political worries about the show’s potential impact on younger viewers, it quickly skyrocketed in popularity. After three seasons of wading through constant censorship notes from MTV, Knoxville and his pals decided to end their run; thus began, Jackass’ successful transition to the silver screen era.
The Jackass franchise spawned several movies that were released between 2002 and 2022, in the following order:
All the Jackass Movies in Order of Release Date Jackass The Movie (2002) Jackass Number Two (2006) Jackass 2.5 (2007) Jackass Presents Mat Hoffman’s Tribute to Evel Knievel (2008) Jackass 3D (2010) Jackass 3.5 (2011) Jackass Presents...

Jackass. With the triumphant return of the Jackass gang, one of the few true events of theatrical moviegoing in the pandemic era, the franchise built on absurd stunts, crass hijinks, and bruised cocks has at last been seriously accepted as the masterful trash it’s always been. Although much Jackass analysis revolves around the on-screen content—from the cinematic form of bold stunts to the interpersonal dynamics and bodies of the cast—the uniquely digital nature of the series is central to its reclamation. It’s that ramshackle camcorder aesthetic, bordering on snuff compared to glossy Hollywood productions, that gives the film series part of its distinct appeal. As much as the naked bodies and buttholes, the illicit sensation of going to a multiplex to watch MiniDV tape makes the first Jackass movie what it is—even as the image resolution and budget have increased, there’s an intimacy and...

Evel Knievel is synonymous with daredevil, but unless you saw him at his heights in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it's difficult to imagine how he built that reputation into something millions of people actually cared about. Beginning with Knievel's disastrous attempt to jump the fountains at Caesar's Palace in 1967—which made him a star once it aired on ABC's Wide World of Sports—millions tuned into his stunts to see if he could defy death one more time. In Being Evel, the documentary that debuts on Jan. 25 at the Sundance Film Festival, director Daniel Junge (They Killed Sister Dorothy...

The holidays are winding down and that means we at Ioncinema.com are gearing up for our annual pilgrimage to Park City where an A-list of documentaries is now set to premiere. Earlier this month Tabitha Jackson and the Sundance doc programming team let the cats out of the bag, unsurprisingly announcing much anticipated Us Doc Competition titles such as the Ross Brothers’ Western, Louie Psihoyos’ Racing Extinction, Marc Silver’s 3 1/2 Minutes and Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe’s (T)Error, along with some surprises like Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel’s bizarro Kickstarted doc Finders Keepers (see trailer below). Having been produced by the fine folks behind The King of Kong and Undefeated, the film bears all the markings of its well regarded pedigree, yet appears to be of even odder ilk, following the story that unfolded when a severed human foot was discovered in a grill bought at a North Carolina auction.

American skateboarder Danny Way has an impressive five gold medals to his name at the Summer X Games, which even more impressively were won across over a decade. And having made his mark on the industry (and then some), his life was turned into the documentary, Waiting for Lightning, by Jacob Rosenberg.
We saw some great early clips this time last year, soon after the film had premiered out in SXSW. And with the film now on the cusp of its global release later this month, following its Us release back in December, we’ve got a new trailer to share from the documentary.

On a trip last weekend to Oklahoma, the Ifp’s Amy Dotson attended the opening of the Womb Gallery, spearheaded by the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne. Her short report follows.
When you think Oklahoma City, usually Bigfoot, giant balloon-filled walk-in vagina sculptures and samurai serving alcoholic snow-cones are not what come directly to mind. But thanks to Flaming Lips front-man Wayne Coyne and his collaborators, all that is about to change.
With its psychedelic exterior from Brooklyn artist Maya Hayuk and featuring campy, graffiti inspired art by Bigfoot One, The Womb Gallery launched this weekend.
Not even the 114 degree night could keep onlookers and art lovers away – myself included. The place was teeming to capacity, air conditioning be damned.
But, alas it was just too hot for BMX star Mat Hoffman to arrive via jet pack as promoted. Luckily, Wayne’s wife was there to keep the peace wearing a see-through skirt and black skivvies,...

Espn’s 30 for 30 – a collection of 30 documentaries by 30 filmmakers crated to commemorate the sports network’s thirtieth anniversary – has finally hit DVD, and with the help of special guest Mike Waldman, we’re going to discuss four of its more memorable entries. First up is Peter Berg’s King’s Ransom, an account of Wayne Gretsky’s fateful move from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings; Winning Time, Dan Klores’ hugely entertaining portrait of the Knicks vs. Pacers rivalry, headed by the incomparable Reggie Miller; The Two Escobars, Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s epic account of corruption, glory, and death in and around Columbian soccer in the days of Pablo Escobar; and finally, The Birth of Big Air, the story of BMX pioneer Mat Hoffman’s quest to push the limits of physics – and his body – in order to scale the skies, directed by Jeff Tremaine.

By now, perhaps, Johnny Knoxville and his "Jackass 3D" pals have recovered from their shenanigans — their gashes healed, their bruises no longer tender to the touch. If not, their movie's $50.4 million opening will certainly mask any lingering pain.
For now, at least. There's already talk of more "Jackass" to come, possibly with another flick culled from footage left on the cutting-room floor or an entirely new feature. Before Knoxville and the boys consider returning to the "Jackass" world, they have a slew of projects to wrap up.
Johnny Knoxville
The next time the "Jackass" ringleader will be seen on the big screen is in "Untitled Comedy," a series of comedic vignettes inspired by old-school films like "The Kentucky Fried Movie.

Bmx legend Mat Hoffman is the subject of the Espn‘s new 30 for 30 documentary, The Birth Of Big Air. It premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City to a huge crowd, and why not, the film is great!
It’s about the original Bmx superstar Hoffman, his rise to cult stardom and how he kept the sport alive during its dog days.
While I was at Tribeca, I sat down and talked with the director Jeff Tremaine, producer Johnny Knoxville and Matt Hoffman himself.
Now, you’re probably thinking. Why is he interviewing people about a documentary? You’re right and I usually don’t do that… but I loved the film, Matt Hoffman deserves his time in the spotlight… and I wanted to meet Johnny Knoxville. So there.
So when did you guys first hear about Mat, and how did he come onto your radar?...

The Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Festival is a popular part of Tff: it features award-winning documentaries about the personal stories behind the sports legends you think you know. This year's Festival celebrated Ice Cube's directorial debut, Straight Outta L.A., about the intersection of the L.A. Raiders and hip hop, as well as the very popular soccer doc The Two Escobars, which had its world premiere here in New York. Another Espn Sports film, The Birth of Big Air about Bmx star Mat Hoffman, was acquired by Tribeca Film for distribution. Espn's Chris Connelly, formerly of Rolling Stone, MTV, and Premiere Magazine, moderated the panel of the people behind Espn's documentary series, 30 For 30: Director/producer Mike Tollin, Espn Films executive producer, Connor Schell, writer Bill Simmons, and writer/director Brett Morgen. Tolan told the audience that the series almost draws on "an auteur theory" where the team...

The Tribeca Film Festival and Espn presented a free showing of The Birth of Big Air Saturday night at the World Financial Center downtown as part of the Tribeca Film Festival Drive-In series. With the river as a backdrop, Bmx bikers from Grove Street Bicycles and skateboarders performed awesome feats for fans, families, and passerby alike both before and after the screening. But the big show was the big daddy of big air himself, Mat Hoffman, who wowed everyone with his Bmx skills. Director Jeff Tremaine and producer Johnny Knoxville were also there to cheer their friend (and their film) on. The people in the audience weren't the only ones who were impressed. Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of Tff, told the audience, "We've done some crazy things at this Festival over the years, but this is the most spectacular." While promoting the film at the Tribeca Film Festival, producer Johnny Knoxville and director Jeff Tremaine were eager brag about Hoffman.s monumental impact on the sport as well as his passion, perseverance and dedication. There's certainly enough action and accidents to go around, but rather than giving yourself paper cuts as a recreational activity, Mat Hoffman is risking his life for the sake of his passion. Bmx has been around for quite a while, but it wasn't until Hoffman arrived that the sport evolved from a rogue hobby into a respected show of athleticism.
